Sunday Update: Water Rate Protest Fundraising Gathering January 29th

(Sunday Update: We have received quite a few RSVP's for next Saturday's 2PM meeting. It is very gratifying and thank you to all. I'd also like to extend a thank you to those who have been calling their neighbors and friends about both the meeting and what is involved here. I doubt that anyone leaving this get-together Saturday will have any doubt about just how serious the issues really are.

While this is about our water rates and our right to contest them in a legitimately conducted process, there is something else that is equally important. If it is proven in a Court of Law that the G4 City Council was not honest about the reasons why the water rate hike had to take place - and I am pretty confident that will be one of the outcomes - then we will have quite a story to take to the people of Sierra Madre. If you haven't RSVP'd yet, please do. And tell your friends as well. I have no doubt that anyone concerned about good and honest government will want to be there.)

Many have asked how they can contribute money for the effort to reclaim our stolen right to challenge the water rate increase. We've been kicking around exactly how to do this, and decided that one big party would be the best idea. So here is your chance.

On Saturday, January 29, from 2 to 4 PM, Sierra Madreans Against Repressive Taxation (SMART) will be holding its inaugural event. The purpose of this gathering will be to raise funds for a potential legal challenge to the City of Sierra Madre's illegal water rate increase procedures. The water rate hike was approved by the City Council on January 11 by a 4 to 1 vote.

Former Mayor Kurt Zimmerman is the guest speaker and will be there to answer any of your questions.

The suggested donation is $50. As this is a fund raising event, all those wishing to attend will be expected to donate. And yes, that is both the single and family rate. If you wish to give more, we'll be honored to receive it.

Food and light refreshments will be served. The same team that provided the food and beverages at the General Plan Update Town Hall Forum will be catering this event. As anyone who attended the Town Hall Forum can tell you, the dishes they create are delicious.

The details: Please RSVP to sierramadretattler@gmail.com (very necessary as we need to get a head count in advance for the cooks.) We will send you an email confirming your admittance along with the address of the event plus a phone number for any questions you may have.

Sorry, no press can be accommodated. This will be a private event.

  1. wait a minute. just because i am against the water rate increase does not mean i support progressive taxation. in fact, the reluctance of government to tax everyone (only 46% of american adults pay income tax) is the root of much evil. why? because 54% of americans think government goodies are free. and, from their perspective, they are right. rename with something less left wing or i will pull my donation.

  2. We have actually had a conversation about this. Would the term "repressive taxation" work better? The idea here is that the water rate hike, because it was actually for something different that first claimed, is stealth taxation. That and our Prop 218 rights were ripped off.

  3. Come to the meeting Right Wing Rick! See for yourself!

  4. It's time you folks who carried the protest letters door to door to remember who signed the letters. Get in touch with them and spread the word. A few people can not finance this legal challenge. "It takes a village."

    ReplyDelete
  5. Although there were many people who campaigned for Measure V, the actual number of people who contributed money towards its passage was small

This time around we can't afford to be miserly.

If we lose this battle, there will be many more rate increases and tax assessments crammed down our throats. Give generously

  6. I'm not nearly as astute or educated as RWR so I understood the "repressive" as to mean the CC-1 repressing the residents' right to know why the water rate was being increased and how it is a form of taxation although it didn't seem to be so at first look.

Tattlers, what did you understand "repressive" to mean?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Did you sign a protest letter? Send a message to the Sierramadretattler@gmail.com and let us know your contact info. Yes we have a list of the protestors' names, but no phone numbers or e-mail addresses. Doesn't take many 44 cent stamps to deplete a small mailing budget.

  8. The city withheld (tried to curb/repress) the truth about the water rate hike.
We the people of Sierra Madre, the SIERRA MADREANS are AGAINST this REPRESSION of the truth by the city.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Rick, educate me. What does "progressive taxation" mean? I thought it was a water bill increase not a tax. Am I wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think Rick makes an interesting point about "Regressive" vs "Repressive," and I am more comfortable with "Repressive" too. According to the mod the "R" in SMART know stands for "Repressive," which is fine with me.

That having been said, if I was a DIRT troll (I know you're not a Troll Rick)I would keep the "Repressive" vs Regressive" debate alive as long as possible to divert people from the real mission which is raising money to vindicate our rights.

    Let's move on.

    ReplyDelete
  11. If Kurt and John are ok with "Repressive," leave it at that

    ReplyDelete
  12. Please, can we get past semantics and on with discussing the issues? Let's raise some money, too.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Sierra Madreans for RIGGED taxation?

    ReplyDelete
  14. No, no, no. Let's argue about whether "repressive" is better than "regressive" all week long so that prospective donors will get really pissed and not show up for the fundraiser.

    Signed,

    The Troll

it's lies we're telling you, lies, lies, lies, those SMARTers that are fighting the water tax increase are lying through their teeth, hiding the real agenda, spinning misleading propaganda, distorting the truth...uncivil lies...a pure lack of ethics...we tell you...LIES and more LIES

    and we should know.

  16. Just picked up a copy of the Looney Views News. You know, the newspaper that's City Hall's mouthpiece. On the front page is an article regarding the Council's passage of the water rate increase.

The article identifies one and only one reason for the rate increase - BONDS.

So much for the City needing money to make repairs to the water infrastructure.

    ReplyDelete
  17. is it any surprise, that the Queen of Falsehoods Susan Henderson fully embraces and ignores the continuous lies told by Joe Mosca and John Buchanan about the water debacle and how often they lied to us?

  20. We are experiencing troll activity on this morning's blog. The Tattler is not afraid. We're on the radar of some pretty nasty posters.

Delays may occur until the worst of the troll posts can be unmasked and deleted.

    Thank you for your patience.

  21. I would personally like to invite all our friends to attend this unprecedented opportunity to hear Kurt Zimmerman and John Crawford explain their opposition to and the illegality of the Water Rate Increase.
Many of you have been to these events before.
We served food and drinks at the big General Plan Committee bash, over 300 showed up.
Everyone felt it was worthwhile! You got to ask questions of very dedicated and knowlegable volunteers concerning the General Plan.

This is a very important issue to all. We have a grand chance to reverse an unfortunate decision by the 4 members on our city council.

You won't regret an opportunity to hear the true facts and your rights as residents and rate payers.:
On Saturday, January 29, from 2 to 4 PM,please plan to attend.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So sorry to see that the residents have to fundraise and take all this time and work to keep the G4 honest on the Council. But the lack of accountability could be fatal.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You know 11:25 am, I don't mind the time and work. The CC-1 won't listen to us in Council, they won't respond to our letters, they discount our speakers. We failed by a very small margin to recall Joe Mosca; John Buchanan is legally past a recall; Moran and Walsh are ripe for recall.

What will get their attention is a lawsuit against the City. No canvassing for signatures, no taking time off work. Just a damn good attorney and those very successful Measure V supporters to raise money.

Join us on the 29th to have an honest discussion about our chances of success. The Council, with the exception of MaryAnn MacGillivray, lied to us at every step of the process and their duplicitous money hungry attorney represents no one but her law firm.

  26. I must be dense! I got the date, the time, but cannot find the "where". Jan 29, 2:PM to 4:PM with check in hand but.......where? Maybe I just don't recognize the place. Help!

    ReplyDelete
  27. What you missed 12:54 is the part that says:

The details: Please RSVP to sierramadretattler@gmail.com

That means you'll be given the address when you RSVP!

We love it that you'll be joining us.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Suggest the trolls go to Sierra Madre News Net with their blogs -- it's up and running now.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Whatever the acronym stands for, it surely is a good description of the people in Sierra Madre who realize that this sitting council, with one exception, lied to them.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Here is my question. If a Court of law decides that Mosca et al did lie to get our money, what do we do then? Certainly they wouldn't be fit to remain in office.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It's going to be a rough year or two for city governments, and the bankruptcies could begin soon.
We were always insulated from that because our councils had such good common sense.
    Now?
    Worrisome.

    ReplyDelete
  32. What is puzzling is why they told such a stupid lie. If they'd just come out and stated it was about bond debt, then people would have shrugged and paid the extra money. Why did they do it? Now they're in a huge mess.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Glen Springer:
Thanks, you're always there to help us out!
Thanks for supporting the Woodland protest.
I know you attended the meetings. Sorry it turned out so sad for us all.
See you at the Jan.29, event.

  34. Henderson also ran an article about Assemblyman Portantino in the latest edition of her paper, with Congressman Dreier's picture instead. LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  35. At long last the hints at impending action have come to fruition. I can't attend, but I'll be donating to SMART regardless. Thank you to the Mod & Modette for their tireless efforts to keep City Hall honest. Keep up the good work.
Right wing rick, ya gotta calm down, if generic names are so polarizing and loaded, go read something else so as not to offend your delicate sensibilities.

  36. lol Steve Tobia's "The Magazine" - a whopping circulation of 8.

what a name for a magazine - fits Tobia's ego - only he would name a publication "The"

I recall the dude touting that he was the biggest employer in Sierra Madre with a half dozen employees

    ReplyDelete
  37. the bond debt wasn't the only thing Buchanan and Mosca were lying about with the water tax, Buchanan got busted trying to use the water hike to build a new 7 million dollar library, undoubtly the bathrooms were to be named in his honor and it had to be Mosca who was appeasing city staff with a new 50k counter for city hall.

    just a pair of liars

both following Henderson's patented lead about dealing with individual lies, just ignore what you said, keep saying something and soon everyone will forget your previous lies, no matter how outlandish and corrupt they were

    ReplyDelete
  38. whaaaaaaaaattttt?

did Mayor Joe and Senor Buchanan both hold emergency meetings that our water pipes were bursting all over the city and we were in immediate threat of a ecological disaster if a water tax hike wasn't approved immediately and the water safety for our precious children was a stake and that was the ONLY reason for the full court press regarding the water hike.

and when caught lying and lying and lying they finally fessed up and had to accept the truth after the truth was exposed by citizens

Henderson is such a louse. She claims this Council has nothing to do with debt but absent mindly omits that this Council had lied to the people, was secretly pushing pet pork projects and this council is still moving forward with other bond projects that will saddle future generations

jeez, how'd we elect this group of liars?

thank goodness this blog isn't run by the Chamber president or a embellzer who gets paid by the city to run legal ads or we'd never find out what lousy ethics our Council exhibits

    ReplyDelete
  39. no press can be accomdated at the fundraiser?

    what press?

there isn't any press in town.

    ReplyDelete
  40. There isn't any press, but there is fake press.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 3:56 - Lawyer Henderson also ran Rich Johnson's column this week with the title "Tuscon."

    ReplyDelete
  42. still read the papers, but not that oneJanuary 17, 2011 at 4:49 PM

I feel sorry for anyone who writes for Henderson.
A slip-up in communication has given them the wrong impression, and they must not realize who Henderson really is.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Tattler is the only press in town

    ReplyDelete
  44. Henderson claims on her Facebook page that she is both a lawyer and holds an advanced degree in business. Despite the mountains of evidence that she possesses neither. But you don't even have to see any of that stuff. Just read her paper. She is barely literate and has the reasoning capacities of a 9 year old.

  45. I've got a law degree from Harvard and a Doctorate from Stanford. I graduated from honors from the Wharton School of Business and finished the USC medical school program in only 3 years graduating in the top 2% of my class.

I was part of the inner circle of Dr. King and was an Senior Advisor to the Obama campaign. I also wrote the Health Care reform and negotiated the release of Vietnam vets from the Hanoi Hilton.

    Please don't ck my record.

    Sincerely,

    Susan Henderson

  46. I recall Rich admitting that Henderson edits out any positive reference in his editorials to this blog and it's editor.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm not quite sure that John Buchanan set out to create his legacy in Sierra Madre to be known as to have underhanded shady ethics and a liar to those that elected him, but that is where he is today.

AS a Councilmember, he is nothing but a shill for his employer.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Life gets no lower than the Gang of 4. But they did miscalculate. There will be a reckoning over their water rate lying. It will be in a court of law, and when its over there will be no doubt what these people did.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Reprehensible Taxation, more like it, will you take out of town money?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Anyone who is concerned about bad government and what it does to those who are forced to endure it is welcomed to attend. Thanks!

  51. anon 6:08

I never "admitted" that my positive comments about the Tattler got edited out. If you read the April 17th edition of the "Looney News" you will see printed in my column that I say Sir Eric performs a valuable service rounding out the flow of information. I doubt this tell will be published here. So, who cares about the truth? Right John?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Okay put me down for two, please give one of my tickets to a very feisty older person on a fixed income at your discretion dear editor will RSVP through the email.

    ReplyDelete
  53. How's Tuscon treating you, Rich? I'll bet you wish you actually could edit your column from time to time.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Why do you put up with him, Mr. Crawford?January 17, 2011 at 10:39 PM

Hey Rich, get a life, a new job, a new perspective, but don't try to dictate what truth is or who cares about it here. You call that tongue in cheek inuendo of rounding out flow of information, a compliment? You are owned. Better to give up writing than write for the rag that publishes the crap that MVNews does. Face it you do not have the intellect to be the type of writer Mr. Crawford is, you never will. You seem to think we can't see the green eyed monster of jealousy eeking out of you and your comments. We can and do. So who cares about the truth? Not you bootlicker

    ReplyDelete
  55. Rich keeps telling us won't be posting here anymore, but just like the common cold he just keeps coming back.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ah c'mon Tattlers. Many of you were fooled by Henderson.

    ReplyDelete
  57. sorry Rick, you did say, maybe you were jesting, but you did write in this blog that Henderson edited out references to this blog

try to write an entire piece complimenting this blog or write an article questioning Joe or John and how they misrepresented the water tax hike and why Buchanan was pusing for a new 7 million dollar library

by the way, how long does it take the $ 4.57 paycheck from Henderson take to clear the bank?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Not to be too critical, it does not serve the issues of Sierra Madre, by inserting one's national poltical affilations into the discussions. One of the reasons Meaure V was successful was people left their ideological bents home, and saw the issues of the town as local issues. It's not important if you are a right wing conservative, left wing progressive, Rhino, or Dino.
It only serves as a deflection to the issues that effect OUR town.
Doing otherwise serves those who want to see us fail.

    ReplyDelete
  59. The funny thing about national politics is its just very boring
next to what is happening here in Sierra Madre. Here we are
players, nationally all we get to do is watch.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm not surprised that the press is not welcome at your uptown lowdown showdown on Sat...it would be awkward and embarrassing for your supporters to say the very least - to be caught in the act, as it were. It would end up on Patch.OMG

    ReplyDelete
  61. Local press would be a time waster. Nobody reads them. Too many important things to do.

    ReplyDelete
  62. 3:31, the local press already has their stories, straight from city hall.

You're miffed because residents are having a private gathering?

    ReplyDelete
  63. By local press, you mean those papers and blogs that do little more than recycle press releases and doggy pictures?
