It is rather astonishing how one City Councilman's inability to tell the truth about something that there really was no point in fibbing about in the first place has captured the attention of so many in this community. We are talking, of course, about Josh Moran's unfortunate answer to a Pasadena Star News inquiry about convicted child pornographer Bob Matheson. Josh's denial became something of a point of hilarity in town as various photographs of Josh with Matheson getting their party on at varying posh Sierra Madre social events have turned up everywhere.
The Star News article in question, "Porn Convict Has Sierra Madre Political Ties," can be found by clicking here. And the passages that caused such an uproar in that quarter read as follows:
Matheson maintained ties to several local politicians, including former Mayor Joe Mosca. Besides signing nomination papers for Mosca in 2010, Matheson hosted a fundraiser for Mosca at Matheson's Liliano Drive home. Mosca moved to Great Britain earlier this year and was unavailable for comment.
Other politicians Thursday sought to distance themselves from Matheson. Although he was supported by Matheson and attended several functions, Councilman Josh Moran said the longtime resident didn't stand out.
"I didn't know him at all," Moran said. "He was just another face in the crowd."
Mayor Buchanan did not return two phone calls seeking comment.
Later several photographs of Josh and Bob chillin' out in the social limelight turned up on the Internet. Much to the embarrassment of the Councilman.
The Moran camp hasn't seen much humor in any of this however, and they have reacted in some rather bizarre ways to our coverage of the story here on The Tattler. They created a spokesperson sock puppet named Lady Elizabeth Wistar, who was recently thrown off The Patch for making up fake events. A blog that is an imitation of this site called the Tattler Tattler, which has since fallen into disuse as its creativity challenged and rather simpleminded proprietors couldn't think of much to say beyond their original premise. And they also shelled out a considerable amount of money to libel me on an anonymous hate site, which turns out to be an offshore entity of considerable disrepute on the Internet. I just hope they didn't give the individual who runs it their credit card information. Or, come to think of it, maybe I do.
All of which seems like a lot of effort just to build some deniability for Josh's unfortunate moment in a newspaper article, and one that didn't have to occur in the first place. It certainly is a fine example of something all moms hopefully told their youngsters early on, that honesty is far less complicated than fibbing, and trying to cover it up only makes matters even worse. And in this case those matters have apparently not run their course yet. Which is fine with me, when you run a blog with a name like The Tattler you just can't ask for better content. We cover this kind of stuff here, no matter what.
Which brings us to Tuesday evening's conflagration, which took place at the first City Council meeting of what is an election year. Something that always adds a certain pungency to the proceedings in our highly politicized community.
The first of these two Neuroblast videos (click here) shows Fay Angus stepping up to the podium to discuss the situation. Entitled "Fay Asks for Leadership on Matheson Case," Fay is shown reading off Mayor John Buchanan for his complete and utter silence on the matter. This being a major crisis in our little town, it would seem incumbent upon the Mayor to offer at least a few comforting words to the residents. Rather he remained silent, even to the point of refusing to return phone calls from newspapers.
Fay is also shown upbraiding Councilman Moran on his inability to tell the truth about his knowledge of Bob Matheson's existence, when obviously that was not the case. Her points being along the lines of what we have discussed here on the blog. It was an effective speech and the angry reaction of Moran's people attending the meeting became quickly evident.
The second of the two Neuroblast videos shows City Council candidate Colin Braudrick stepping to the podium to defend his friend Josh Moran. This has become something of an unfortunate moment for Colin in that his line of attack, in particular in regard to Fay Angus's earlier comments, was entirely besides the point.
This video (click here), entitled "Colin Braudrick on the Matheson Matter," details his experiences with child pornographers and similar predators as an officer of the Los Angeles Police Department. His point being that the people around a predator have no idea going on as the activities of the offending person are, in Colin's words, "their deepest, darkest secret."
Which is something I believe everyone in town can agree with. But where Colin went astray was in the second half of his statement. Here he suggests that Fay Angus and "others in the community" are guilty of attempting to somehow implicate Matheson's friends with his crimes. Which is something of an unfair attack, and in my opinion one designed to fend off the critics of failed city leaders such as his friend the Councilman.
Fay's point, and mine as well for that matter, has always been about the failed leadership of this City's political class in the Matheson Affair. We have a Mayor who refused to discuss the matter in any way until last Tuesday's meeting, and then only because Fay held his feet to the fire. Plus we also have a Mayor Pro Tem who just couldn't find it in himself to tell a truth that would have in no way harmed him. And still can't bring himself to do it, for that matter.
Would it really have been too much to ask of either of them to issue a press release that said investigations are ongoing, and that Matheson engaged in awful crimes and they share in the horror and disgust of all Sierra Madre residents? Instead of having their surrogates, friends and family members create absurd sock puppets, nonsensical blogs, tell specious tales and subscribe to hate websites? All with the purpose of attacking anyone who dared to speak out about the lousy job our absentee guardians of the public interest have been doing in this matter?
You'd think that these people would have known better. If John and Josh had done the right things in the first place, nobody would even be talking about this anymore. Or going to the videotape, for that matter.

Thanks Dave (Neuroblast) for posting these on YouTube.
ReplyDeleteColin Braudrick needs to drop out of the council race. We don't need Josh's roomate on the council. One Josh is one too many.
Never having to say your sorry is telling the truth in the first place or owning up in the second place. Covering up is a third place action of third rate politicians/city council members/community "big wigs", etc.
ReplyDeleteHow simple it would have been to say: "he was an acquaitance/friend/associate of mine, but now that I know this about his, I will have nothing to do with him."
The dirt was of dealing with embarrassing public revelations is to say nothing about it and have surrogates attack the messengers.
ReplyDeleteIt's time all the Bart Doyle flunkies be uncovered and rejected as council members and candidates who pretend they are on the side of fiscal responsibility and decency, then once push comes to shove....they flip to the dark side/Bart Doyle agenda.
ReplyDeleteThe "dark side" has obviously chosen Braudrick as their man to replace Mosca. The pattern is obvious.
There is only one individual sitting on the current council who is qualified to sit there.
Let's just all pray she will run for re-election so we can return her expertise to the council.
Colin Braudrick's point is so tangential as to constitute a red herring. Yes, of course it it wise not to rush to judgement, but no one here is doing that. Like the eloquent Fay Angus, we are wondering why Buchanan is silent.
ReplyDeleteThat you, Neuroblast, for the film evidence. Mr. Braudrick is attempting to shift the focus from Mattheson, Mosca, Moran, and Buchanan, on to a non-existent bogeyman. Like Mosca, Mr. Braudrick seems just clever enough to be dangerous.
Sadly, Colin was suckered into doing something he should not have. His attempts to portray himself as a non-partisan candidate was squandered on Josh's needs to bury his lies. What a waste.
ReplyDeleteIf you watch and listen to the video on Neuroblast, you'll hear a little round of applause from the left side of the room, that's where Toni Moran, Teri Buchanan and Carol Canterbury were sitting, Colin was sitting in the next row with them. It was those women who applauded their " boy Colin" for getting up and speaking for his roomate, Josh, outraged that Fay Angus would dare confront Buchanan and Moran.
ReplyDeleteLet's stop and think about that....
Toni Moran, Councilmember Josh Moran's mother. Teri Buchanan, John Buchanan's wife. Carol Canterbury, the "dirt" queen realtor of Sierra Madre, who sat in her car and spied on the residents who were holding a candlelight vigil last month in front of Matheson's home, to support and pray for his victims, innocent children.
Colin Braudrick will NOT get my vote.
Thank you Neuroblast. You make it possible for everyone to review the speeches for themselves. I am amazed that anyone can take exception to one word that Fay said. She is measured, reasonable and speaks for the good of Sierra Madre.
ReplyDeleteThat genie is out of the bottle. Good luck putting it back in again.
ReplyDeleteThe public outcry has not been that anyone who knew Matheson is like him in this devastating criminal behavior, but that the Mayor and the Mayor pro tem have not stepped up to tell the community about it, or to keep residents informed about what has gone on. All of the guilt by association talk is a weird and disassociated response.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to note here the failure to acknowledge the power of instinct. I can think of several colleagues, off the top of my head, who I assume have "deep, dark secrets." It's not just what they say, it's also what they don't say. It's not just what they have, it's also what they don't have. And I decline their invitations to poker night.
ReplyDeleteThink of Joe Mosca: friendly? . . . or smarmy? When he said he was a preservationist, did you believe him? Should you have believed him?
Logic without instict is as dangerous as instinct without logic.
It is politically correct, and therefore politically expedient in Sierra Madre to pose as "open-minded." But often open-mindedness is a cover for empty-headedness. Accept blindly, and one day you'll have to try to explain how a Mosca supporter walking around in a kilt seemed just another face in the crowd.
Let's face it, many people in this town live in fear that they should somehow be perceived as having an opinion that could cost them the respect of their equally fearful friends. Obviously they are easily manipulated.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure exactly what the propaganda technique is (maybe "misdirection"?) but the goal is to respond to something that has not been said so you don't have to respond to what has been said. Way too much of that in Sierra Madre politics for the last 8 years.
ReplyDeleteUnless some more canddates declare before 5:00 pn on Tuesday, we don't have many choices for the three seats on City Council.
ReplyDeleteAnyone heard anything about Eugene Goss? Since we now seem to hate and dispise Colin Braudrick and John Harabedian, MaryAnn MacGillivray has not yet declared, Chris Koerber is in for the 2-year spot, and John Capoccia is timidly testing the waters, what are we to do? Time is running out...
Look, just because someone seems friendly and nice, doesn't mean they really are.
ReplyDeleteWe've had a succession of political candidates who have been elected by a majority of people who believed them.
Please, please Sierra Madre, back people on their qualifications and their records.
Doesn't matter if they are your friends or if you don't even care to be their friend, if they are qualified, support them for the good of the community.
Colin Braudrick has put up a huge red flag. He obviously is not qualified to be on our city council.
Make sure this time, we support intellegent and qualified people who have no other agenda than to serve their community, not developers and not just to use their election to the city council to jump start them to an assembly or state senate office.
No "central committee" (Sacramento) candidates. Especially anyone who has supported SCAG or other "central committee" pro-development groups.
We don't need pro-development candidates here in Sierra Madre.
We need people who will be good stewards of our assets. That means they know how to conserve money, our money.
Who hates John Harabedian? Or even Colin? I think there is more than one opinion on this board.
ReplyDelete9:37, it's a question of trusting judgement.
ReplyDeleteI thought Braudrick would be good on the council, but this was a serious misstep, so I'm rethinking whether he can keep his eye on the ball or not.
The last thing I want is another person who spouts the party line.
That's what got us into the mess we are in with run away expenses to keep a grossly oversized city hall in place.
I don't hate Colin, I disagree with him and would never vote for him, but there is no need to hate anyone. We saw enough of that when the dirts ran a "hate MacGillivray" campaign. It was shameful and baseless.
ReplyDeleteI like John Harabedian, but will not vote for him. He has been away from Sierra Madre for the past 8 years, for the most part, getting a very good education. I don't think he will vote against the Sacramento group, because, I'm sure a young lawyer like him has future political plans.
John H. you should be on the planning commission for a few years, so you can learn more about what's really happening here.
Again, I like you. I think you're a fine young man, I just don't want you on the city council, AT THIS TIME.
Let's leave the "hate" stuff out this time around.....
Let's go with who's going to do the best job for Sierra Madre for the next few tough economic times.
This may have been Brodrick's declaration to the Dirts that he's on their side.
ReplyDeleteExcellent post 9:53. Thanks. And good advice to Haribidian too. He's not been in any meetings until recently and then been on TV a lot saying not much. The Planning Comm. would be a great place for him to learn and for us to learn about him.
ReplyDelete9:56
ReplyDeleteThe dirts put him on the library commission with Rob Stockley and gang, then they nominated him and put him on the General Plan Committee....with a 4/1 vote.....MacGillivray voting against.
Then they put Bart Doyle on the PSUSD representive for Sierra Madre, again a 4/1 vote....MacGillivray again voting against.
No, Colin is the dirts "golden boy" and they tried to get all of the preservation people to think he was on their side. Now we know he is not.
But the dirts knew it all along.
The dirts are as clever as they are sneaky and dishonest.
No one seems to have noticed that Mayor John appointed Enid Joffee to the UUT Oversight Committee on Tuesday night. Is there a program to rehabilitate all of the miscreatns in the short time left to Buchanan?
ReplyDeleteAh, that's perfect. Who better to say "Everything looks good here!" than Joffe?
ReplyDeleteI have no idea who I will vote for. There is a full quarter of a year until the election. A lot can happen.
ReplyDeleteAnybody think Enid will ever admit that the UUT has anything to do with something other than the Paramedics?
ReplyDeleteI believe there is a trace of concern over our community"s tenancy to pick "Ringers" to represent them on the City Council. The City has demonstrated time and time again the wish to remain a" village".The prospect of living in residential cluster uber sprawl is only a town away and one had a multitude of "sprawlvilles" to move to.The "Building Industrial Complex" can't stand it!All they see are mega bucks. So they pour the cash in and attempt to corrupt the system and place their treacherous Frauds in positions of power.
ReplyDeleteThe lying that comes from the other side is shocking. That so many people buy into it makes you wonder about the ability of this City to survive.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny that Josh and his mom are claiming that there are people trying to connect him with Matheson. Here I thought that by lying about it he did that all by himself.
ReplyDelete10:16, after what JB did to Joffee maybe he is feeling guilty, no, that can't be, he's just using her again.
ReplyDeleteEnid has finally come out from under the bus where Buchanan threw her.
ReplyDeleteI think Braudrick is learning about a side of the city he has lived in for many years but has never experienced. Colin will not lie and will tell you what he knows. If you drive this open honest person away you are making a big mistake. Go out of your way to talk to the man, then make up your mind. I AM....
ReplyDeleteThere is no doubt that Colin has a lot to learn, 11:26. That he doesn't know much of this yet means he has not been talking to anybody but one side of the story. The burden is not on us to talk to him. The question is why is it he has never spoken to us?
ReplyDeleteI have respect for Colin, and his being on the job. I appreciate his work and efforts to protect and serve Los Angeles proper.
ReplyDeleteBecause our local police department is grossly over staffed, and has been noted as the most litigious of ALL police departments in the US. It may be a bad time to have a LAPD officer as one of our council members.
Neuroblast Films
11:36 burden yourself to learn more about that which to talk. 11:37, it is obvious you don't know the man either. Please get your acts together before the curtain closes.
ReplyDeleteDo you think Don Watts would run again if we can talk him into it?
ReplyDeleteAnon 11:51am
ReplyDeleteYou seem a bit confused.
11:51 - is this a Zen riddle?
ReplyDeleteSilence and lies are techniques used by people attempting a cover up. What do you think is being "covered up"?
ReplyDeleteThe "cover up" is always more incriminating than honesty if what is said is true.
How many here really believe that the city didn't know about Matheson's arrest and conviction in Nova Scotia until Dec 13?
ReplyDeleteYou don't have Josh Moran's mother, John Buchanan's wife and C Carol Canterbury cheering you on while you do damage control for Josh.
ReplyDeleteThese people don't support ANYONE who isn't a DIRT.
Colin is a DIRT.
We don't have to "drive" him away, he's been gone since the start.
The GPC has to wake up to that.
If Broderick wasn't aligned with the "Preserve through Development" crowd before, all this reaction will probably make it a sure thing. I can imagine the sympathy that will gush out from certain quarters. As in, See, we told you how horrible those slow growth people are.
ReplyDelete2:19 is right you know.
ReplyDeleteMaybe there's been a bridging effort on Colin's part, but if that trio are his cheering section, that's an endorsement for only one direction.
don't forget--cheering mom Moran and wife Buchanan were also seen at the previous CC meeting looking for opportunities to clap adoringly at the verbage coming from their respective family members. But, alas, timing is everything and they missed the cue and the hand flaps went undetected.
ReplyDeleteIn Sierra Madre the politics is like no other town around.
ReplyDeleteactually anon 4:49 pm Sierra Madre politics is a microcosm of every city and state politics
ReplyDeleteSaid by my Sister-"I sat through a 3 hour lecture on sexual predators today. Folks, I am here to attest that teaching your child "stranger danger" is woefully inadequate. Only 5 percent of children are molested by strangers. The video tape interviews I saw today were psychopaths who were will to wait a very long time to actually do anything while they systematically "groom" not only the child, but all adults associated with the child. Pretty scary stuff. Children are no match for these men, adults have got to educate themselves."
ReplyDeleteGood point, 8:04. One in particular belonged to our Chamber of Commerce and held parties for Sierra Madre political candidates at his home.
ReplyDeleteI just read this and made me laugh. Out of all the candidates, Colin is the only one who has voted to preserve SM. On the GPSC he Teryl and Deb have been the most pro preservation people. He has voted over 20 times to protect Sierra Madre. What has Chris done other than help Tim Donnelly? I heard at the last CC meeting Chris was sitting with Sandy Sargosian. Didn't she have the contract to sell the houses at the first 1 Carter? Didn't she stand up against Measure V? Didn't she write the Cumquat? If Chris is getting advice from her then he is a very very very dangerous. John, its time to write an article about this. Sandy is only concerned about making money and has sold us out more than once.
