There is a term that has gained wide media acceptance over the last decade. Originating in Great Britain, "Metrosexual" (a play on "metropolitan" and "heterosexual," see Wikipedia's definition here), is used to describe men who, while not gay themselves, do find themselves drawn to similar kinds of styles and accouterments. Trappings that typify attitudes about things from fashion trends to acceptable social mores. Drawn to the same high-end neighborhoods located in tonier settings, metrosexuals, at least in this original context, are often the first adapters of new trends in fashion, entertainment and decorum.Over time, and with more exposure in the popular press, the meaning of metrosexual morphed a bit to include certain attitudes and behaviors as well. While the more traditional male roles came with certain expectations for dealing competently with the cold hard facts of business and governmental life, metrosexuals were seen as more likely to talk about empathy, their feelings, and yours.
Caring deeply about current issues typifies this media meme, but how that care is to be applied to the everyday mundane problems of making this world work properly is not always fully aired out. It is an outlook far more attuned to mood than matter. Vague, airy pronouncements about concepts such as "community" and aesthetic "values" can often be heard, but rarely do they come with anything of true substance attached.
And somehow this approach has come to be a part of Sierra Madre politics. We are now into our third straight election where a metrosexual politician is conducting a strong campaign for City Council. A campaign that is heavy on visual appearances and expressions of deep caring, but with precious little being said about actual policy and the hard decisions this city faces. The "good guy" you really need to meet, many find likable, and cares deeply about the community, but who is as difficult to pin down on anything truly substantive as mercury.
The first time this approach was used here was in the campaigns of Joe Mosca. In his premier run for the City Council we saw a lot of attractive photography of the candidate in various natural settings, with a message that invariably included something about his desires to preserve the community while "holding dear" its "precious values." There was little in the way of actual concrete policy attached to that campaign, and when Joe later went on to betray those who had believed he authentically shared their desire to preserve this town as it is, he denied ever having said such things. And he was technically correct, he never really did. While Joe did talk often, he never really said much of anything.
This technique also worked for the campaign of Josh Moran in 2010. Widely suspected of being a carpetbagger who cared only about jamming predatory development into Sierra Madre, and for personal aggrandizement, Josh's handlers mounted a publicity effort that included photographs of the stylishly dressed candidate standing in a signature downtown setting gazing up with a look of sheer ecstasy on his face. He appeared to be so consumed with joy over Sierra Madre that he was about to either soar skyward, or have an orgasm. The message was that he deeply loved this town. Though exactly how he would show that love was never discussed by the candidate. That was only revealed after he had won the election.
Now Colin Braudrick's campaign is problematic for me. For the record, both myself and my wife did sign his campaign papers. And in person he does say all the right things. However, the sad fact is he is running his campaign in a very similar way to those conducted by Joe Mosca and Josh Moran. It is almost as if he is talking to the same campaign consultant, one that has advised him to by all means stay away from discussing hard governmental issues. Instead Colin is conducting what I am terming here a "Metrosexual Campaign." Heavy on feelings, mood, and visuals, but nearly invisible on the very serious challenges currently being faced by this community.
An example of this is the recent postcard Colin's campaign sent out, a representation of which appears at the beginning of this article. "Preserve our Community for the next generation," is one of the broad statements to be found there. "Ensure we have a thriving downtown." "Ensure continued funding and support for Public Safety." Does this mean Colin does not support the part-time SMPD he discussed in my kitchen? Hard to tell. "Protect our urban forest." Can anybody please tell me what an urban forest is? Is it about the trees in our yards? For that matter, can anyone tell me what any of this means?
My vote will go to those people who really dig into the policies and concerns of this town. People who don't just allude to the very real problems we face (#1 being the current spendthrift City Council that squandered our CRA money on absolutely nothing, and now has just been given the rather shocking news that they're going to have to pay a bunch of it back), but also how they will actually solve them. People who will take an actual stand rather than pandering to all sides, all the while claiming they're doing it in the name of "unifying our community."
I've become worn out on the politics of feeling and empathy. I don't care to hear about how much you love this town, I want to know exactly how you will save it. This City just took a $1.8 million dollar hit. What about it? Are you going to raise taxes even further? Reduce the size of City Hall? Sell off CRA owned properties? I want hard-nosed people who will come up with hard-nosed solutions to very real problems such as these. And then actually talk about them.
Two years of a so-called "Civility Council" and all we have gotten out of it is precious little civility and a trip to the brink of true financial disaster. It is time to elect people who actually understand the issues this town faces, and can solve its problems. And don't just pander to our "feelings."
We are only going to know who these people are if they actually talk about the issues.
http://sierramadretattler.blogspot.com
I am encouraged that at least three of the candidates are sticking to the issues -- are not afraid to take a stand, and are able to talk intelligently about what is important in Sierra Madre. We need council members who know about the issues, are fiscally conservative, are problem solvers and will listen to the citizens.
ReplyDeleteHow can we preserve our city for future generations if more than half the General Fund is paying the cops? How will Colin vote on police association issues when he is a member of a police association? We need more than a nice dresser and a pleasant smile.
DeleteOn the mark!!Unfortunately,to our regret,we have tended to select our leaders on their good looks, charm and affability and with little experience in the very areas we need to successfully guide our community. It is time we look below the surface!Thank you,Crawford for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteCrawford isn't "controlled" by anyone. This is why the Tattler is so great.
DeleteHe's an independent thinker who when faced with the truth, deals with it, no matter what.
Crawford prefers the truth to illusions. Even if it is temporarily painful.
I would rather know the truth than believe lies. We are constantly programmed by the media to believe falshoods. The good news is, once we realize that, we are immune to it.
So for those of you who fell for the dishonest campaigns of Mosca, Moran and now Braudrick, it's not your fault, you've been programmed. Once you realize that, it will hurt, but in the long run, you'll be glad you now know the truth. I know I was.
The strategy being employed by Colin has been seen one time too many. It is time he told us what he would do if elected. The wink and a nod thing left for England with Joe.
ReplyDeleteYou are 100% right.
ReplyDeleteUnforunately, 75% of the voting public will buy into the slick P R, the phoney newspaper endorsements, and don't know what the real issues facing the town.
They just don't care, and will pick the persons with the best advertising a few days before the election.
They just don't care
They just don't care
They just don't care
Don't worry they will get the same kind of government....
Gosh, I hope you're wrong about the voters, 7:05.
DeleteIt's a might sad commentary to think we now live in a
"Kardashian reality world". SIGH
Metrosexual? 2001 would like it's phrase back. I tend to like your articles, but metrosexual and drawing a wig on Colin? Really? I haven't decided who to vote for yet as I haven't made the time to think, read and digest.
ReplyDeleteOn a lighter side, next time you want to use a hip new term that you think has gained momentum in the past few years, double check with your kids; that's part of our kid duty - to assist our parents with hip verbiage
Another naive or worse voter who can't stand to read the truth.
DeletePoster at 7:10, aren't you missing reruns of Beverly Hills Housewives?
Get real, pal.
I don't know, the endless years of Mosca-Buchanan have given me plenty of time to think, read, and digest. First-name-Colin is a Mosca wannabe.
DeleteI think the candidates should pitch in, and rent out the theater in town, and put an ad in the paper, to have a REAL candidate's forum.
ReplyDeletePick a moderator acceptable to them, invite the news media to cover it, and have at it.
We don't know anyone accept Macgillvery as an incumbent. So, how do we know who to vote for?
The Kiwanas, Women's Club, and Rotary, are not supposed to be doing political activism as spelled out in there non profit charters.
That is a good idea, perhaps when the newspapers get to actually cover a political debate, they would actually show up, instead of making blind endorsements to whom ever spends the most $$ on advertising
DeleteMaybe, as a public service, they would provide free advertisements of the event?
DeleteIs the civic club allowed to? I've already started hearing their gossip.
DeleteWho is the contact to rent out the theater?
ReplyDeletePerhaps some of us could get it organized.

DeleteThe theater seat less and 50 people. We need the school auditorium.

Kurt Zimmerman should be the moderator. Former Mayor and a guy with some pretty advanced legal training.
ReplyDeleteAs the kids nowadays say, "Right on!"
ReplyDeleteMr. Crawford. Good article today, except you forgot to ask about the central thought expressed by Braudrick's flyer: "Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community.", a quote from Anthony D'Angelo. What on earth does this mean and how does it specifically apply to the problems facing Sierra Madre?
ReplyDeleteIt means "Without a fashion-sense, there can be no sense of fashion."
DeleteColin has my vote. I spent 20 minutes talking to him yesterday and he has a better grasp of the issues then any other candidate. He spent most the time talking about CRA and other issues. I asked him questions and he had good honest answers to all of them. He is a lot more than a pretty face.
ReplyDeleteMight you share some of those good honest answers?
DeleteDoes this mean that he used the Library fund raiser for his political reasons?
DeleteThe moderator should be decided upon by all candidates, or not at all.
ReplyDeleteI am looking into what it will take to get this organized.
If anyone is interested in getting this going, ask for the "Old Man"
at 355 4576.
It would be great if the various candidate managers could contact me, so this can be organized in an equitable way to all running, and the citizenry.
DeleteAs soon as I hear back from the Theater, I will let you know where we stand.
DeleteI am looking for a scheduling date that all candidates can approve as well as the theater open dates.
If the theater requires money, I will ask for donations, perhaps to be paid to the theater directly.
The theater is a non-profit,so we may be able to get a break since this is meant to be a public service event.
old man, not sure what moderator you are talking about or what you want to organize are you talking about a debate?
DeleteThe moderator's roll will be to give equal time to each candidate, and to keep personality attacks from occuring.
DeleteI'm not sure as to the format, something to be decided by consensus of the candidates.
I think it should be as open as possible.
No more staged gotcha questions, just policy and decision making, and what candidate's qualifications are.
I will also call Sierra Madre School, I don't know what the attendance interest will be, whether that venue will be necessary..
DeleteLooks like John Crawford need not apply.
DeleteThis just goes to show what an earlier poster wrote. Crawford is a huge Koerber fan. Koerber has no specific plans other than plugging his web page every time I turn on the TV. When are you going to write something negative about Koerber? I am sure you and Koerber wrote this article together?
ReplyDeleteBS, I'm wondering if you're Braudrick or one of his canyon cougars?
DeleteSay what you will about Crawford, but the man writes his own articles and gives it a lot more than you do.
You dirts have one goal here.
DeleteYou don't give a damn who wins the 4 year seat, which will be highly likely MacGillvray and Capoccia. You don't care.
You are VERY interested in winning the 2 year seat that Mosca abandoned.
In Colin Braudrick, Josh Moran's roommate, you have your third and majority vote on the city council. Josh, Nancy and Colin.
Colin has dozens if not hundreds of expensive signs all over town, and all over the NO ON V investors club properties.
He is being supported by realtors Toni Moran and Carol Canterbury, John Buchanan's wife Teri and other Mosca supporters in the Canyon.
He sent out the expensive mailer, he is likely being financed by the Building Industry and the California Realtors Association.
Bart Doyle needs Colin on the city council.
So start you blog to sing Colin's praises.
DeleteYep, it's obvious, Crawford is just in it for the money.
ReplyDeleteGo check Crawford donations at the city clerk's office, they are public record. I checked them, when he ran for council in 2010.
DeleteAll his donations came from Sierra Madre residents with the exception of a small donation from a Tattler reader in Temple City, a private citizen, not associated with any special interest.
One more from a resident of El Monte who was concerned about the then TITAN scandal, which Crawford covered here in the Tattler.
John Crawford....gets no ad money here on the Tattler. That's why he can post the truth to us.
Again, Crawford was not financed and is not currently financed by any special interests or candidates in this election.
Go check the official state records.
Crawford is an idiot for turning on Colin, he is going to push Colin to the otherside. Good job John, we all know Colin is going to beat Chris hands down, so why would you turn a potential ally on the council into being an enemy?
ReplyDeleteYou dirts hope Colin will be Chris.
DeleteWe shall see.
Colin is already there.
DeleteLame article. What the hell does "metrosexual" have to do with our Sierra Madre election?
ReplyDeleteBut the real question is , why did Crawford and wife sign the election papers? Were they bamboozled?
It has a lot to do with it, 8:47. He shows you the clear connection between Josh and Mosca.
DeleteCrawford was a staunch supporter of Colin, I know, I had a discussion with him several weeks ago.
However, after he found out just who was supporting Colin and why, he and his wife discussed the facts and came to the decision they could no longer support him as a candidate.
The Crawford's are honest people. The real truth means more to them than what they would like the truth to be.
Maybe john taint that bright, I reckon..
DeleteOff to a great start today. Though it looks like their won't be a lot of work getting done at the realty offices.
ReplyDelete8:53!!!!!!
DeleteClassic! Very good post.
Metrosexual? Really? Colin was my son's baseball coach. He was the best coach we ever had. He also taught the players the value of honesty and integrity. And he is far from metrosexual. He is actually one of the toughest men I know. He almost died last year after donating a kidney. He backpacked the John Muir Trail by himself a few years ago. And he is a homicide detective in South Central. Doesn't get much tougher than Colin. He is also the nicest guy. I am so glad he is running for council, but it gets me mad how much abuse he takes. He has never done anything but try to do the right thing with honesty and integrity.
ReplyDelete8:53
DeleteWhat does that have to with the price of tea in china?
Or this current election issues.
"He has never done anything but try to do the right thing with honesty and integrity."
DeleteWhat about lying to John Crawford and his wife in their kitchen, when they signed his papers?
"Lius P.Tells It Like It Is"
This video shows exactly how people feel when a charlatan deceives you into casting your vote for a liar, who uses the electorate given power to further the agenda of an entity working behind the curtain, of manchurian candidates in an unethical bid for continual control of our town.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8rYxF4yMzE
Here is a exhaustive definition of a pathological liar, please use this as a resource when picking a candidate.
Pathological liars - or "mythomaniacs" - may be suffering from histrionic personality disorder or narcissistic personality disorder. The following comments basically reflect a pathological liar who has the characteristics of histrionic personality disorder.
Some Characteristics:
Exaggerates things that are ridiculous.
One-upping. Whatever you do, this person can do it better. You will never top them in their own mind, because they have a concerted need to be better than everyone else. This also applies to being right. If you try to confront an individual like this, no matter how lovingly and well-intentioned you might be - this will probably not be effective. It's threatening their fantasy of themselves, so they would rather argue with you and bring out the sharp knives than admit that there's anything wrong with them.
They "construct" a reality around themselves. They don't value the truth, especially if they don't see it as hurting anyone. If you call them on a lie and they are backed into a corner, they will act very defensively and say ugly things (most likely but depends on personality), but they may eventually start to act like, "Well, what's the difference? You're making a big deal out of nothing!" (again, to refocus the conversation to your wrongdoing instead of theirs).
Because these people don't value honesty, a lot of times they will not value loyalty. So watch what you tell them. They will not only tell others, but they will embellish to make you look worse. Their loyalty is fleeting, and because they are insecure people, they will find solace in confiding to whomever is in their favor at the moment.
They may be somewhat of a hypochondriac. This can come in especially useful when caught in a lie, for example, they can claim that they have been sick, or that there's some mysteriously "illness" that has them all stressed out. It's another excuse tool for their behavior.
Obviously, they will contradict what they say. This will become very clear over time. They usually aren't smart enough to keep track of so many lies (who would be?).
Neuroblast Films
Calm down Neuroblast! Crawford never said Colin lied to him. So you've made the jump from media technicial and Hildreth supporter to profiler?
DeleteKeep to your strengths.
Neuroblast what is your problem? Have you ever even spoken to Colin?
DeleteNope, I just got the same card you did.
DeleteBy the way, the pathological liar filter should apply to all candidates, at all times, in all elections.
Neuroblast Films
And, as well, to all posters! Being a candidate should not be a monopoly on truth, right Neuroblast?
DeleteEvery candidate should hold "truth" dear, and protect it.
DeleteNo person should have a "monopoly" on "truth", that would mean he or she would be the only person who speaks truth, that would be horrible.
Neuroblast Films
Signing election papers comes at such an early stage of the game that might sign Mother Theresa's papers and later change your mind regarding the issues.
ReplyDeleteI asked Colin yesterday why he is running, because you have to be an idiot or crazy to run in this town. He then went on to say how much he loved Sierra Madre and wanted to preserve it for the future. He wasn't worried about the negativity. And he refuse to utter a negative word about Chris, and supported Crawford's right to put whatever he wants in his blog. That level of political maturity is rare in this town. He has my support.
ReplyDeleteSeriously....he's cute!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat are any other qualifications for him being on our city council?
DeleteHe coaches baseball....that's nice.
He is a policeman.....that's nice.
He gave a kidney....that's nice.
But......wait.....what does that have to do with his qualifications to be on our council.
Only thing I can figure are who is supporting him and why?
And since it's the same people who accepted huge donations from the Builders Association and Realtors against measureV.......that my friends, DIS-QUALIFIES him.
He is on the GPSC and has done a lot of good there. Ask any of the original 5 what they think about him.
DeleteHe was on the SMLL board forever and completely transformed Heasley field.
He is on the library board
He has a MBA
He is on the parks master plan
He is really smart
He loves this town and is committed to keeping it the town we love
He is a very strong measure V supporter
Seems pretty damn qualified to me!!!!!!!!!
When is Joe coming back?
DeleteHe was named to the General Plan by Buchanan Walsh and Moran (his friend and landlord)
DeleteHe was named to the Library Board of Trustees by Walsh and Buchanan.
Voting is private. How do you know who he voted on Measure V?
Seems to be a very busy man. How does one spend extra time with your family when your are in city meeting all the time?
We want a CHOICE not an ECHO of past failures, we don't want another Mosca.
ReplyDeleteWe will be left with the same dangerous policies.
For heaven's sake, Colin Braudrick has not the background to qualify him as suitable for our city council at this time.
Look at the candidate's backgrounds, who has the best qualifications to make critical decisions for the future of this community?
If Colin Braudrick was running for head of the police union, he would be qualified for that. Not for Sierra Madre city council. No way.
You have a choice! Six people running for three seats! Never have there been six more qualified candidates. Each one brings experience, education, and community involvement to their race.
DeletePick your three. There's your choice.
Seriously, people, You all need to make your own decisions. I have spoken with Colin, I have emailed him and he has answered all my questions. Go do your own homework. I wouldn't care if he was metro-sexual, homosexual or heterosexual...he's got my vote. Colin is a divorced Dad who is trying to make ends meet while providing for his child. Yes, he has a roommate, yes, it's Josh Moran. Guess what...he's made that public record! He's not hiding anything. I bet anyone $100 that he would live on his own if he could afford too. No one goes from family life to "room-mate" life very easily. For all of you who like to "drag the candidates down"...I suggest you run your own campaign. Those reflections in the mirror are not always pretty. Go get em' Colin!
ReplyDeleteThe problem is that Colin only says what you want to hear than pulls a Mosca. Just because he answered your questions doesn't mean he is not a flip flopper. All one has to do is read his mailer, zero substance. It does make a person fell good. Just good marketing, nothing else.
DeleteColin is not divorced.
DeleteSeems to me that Crawford is being even-handed. First the story about Johnny "Columbus" Harabedian, now the flip side of Colin "Metro" Brauderick. Can't make an informed decision about your candidates until you know the whole story.
ReplyDeleteI'm leaning toward Braudrick and nothing in today's post makes me want to change my leanings. The real issue here is generational. Younger voters want someone they're familiar with and relate to not the old fossils aligned against them on the Tattler.
And who ever is posting about the "Canyon Cougars", can you get over yourself? Jeeze, what a vicious old denizen you are!
We need people on our council right now who have management and executive experience.
ReplyDeleteWe have had plenty of examples the opposite. Josh Moran and Nancy Walsh come to mind.
Come on Sierra Madre residents, get off your "he's cute, or he's so nice"
Nothing to do with reality.
We've had management and executive experience - remember Doyle, Joffee, Buchanan, Stockly - all experienced and way too over qualified. I'll go with honest, intelligent, and trustworthy!
DeleteBoth Koerber and Capoccia have served on Rob Stockly's foundation. Does that make them DIRTS by association?
ReplyDeleteColin's not qualified? Watch a general plan meeting and say that. He is by far the most qualified person other than Marianne. He has a MBA, has lots of board experience. He is really smart and a great problem solver. Colin is patient and listens to people. I have seen him make desicions, he is what we need on council. Colin could win hands down on his merits alone.
ReplyDeleteSomething else that is really important. Chris is a Tea Party candidate. He has been flaunting it to some people than hiding it from others. At least Colin is always willing to put it all on the table.
The Problem that I see with Colin is he says what we want to hear. He takes the soft politics approach. Do not say much, just do not say anything that could hurt his chances. Once elected we are guaranteed his does a Mosca. He is a look alike of Mosca, talks the same talk as Mosca and has the same supporters. It is time for true change, not the same old. I say VOTE NO for Colin. Birds of a feather flock together.
ReplyDeleteYou have been using "the birds of a feather" term for months. Come up with something new.
Delete9:59, I think the point of the simple repetition is a strategy. Keep saying something enough and it sticks in people's minds. A propaganda technique.
DeleteI read Colin's website he talks in detail there. I called him this morning and asked him about the allegations. He took the high road and said The Tattler can write whatever, it doesnt bother him. I asked him about his "soft answers" and he went on to tell me about his plans. He wants an immediate hiring freeze, he went through the budget and identified over $100,000 he can save. He spoke about the CRA debacle. He told me about his plan to change the tree ordinance to protect old growth oaks and sycamores. He told me about how he refuses to take a side, because ones you do you shut yourself off from people you are supposed to represent. He told me he is against the ALF and told me what should be there, stores since it is part of our downtown. He told me about how we need to think long term in every desicion the council makes. He told me about how the first UUT increase promised funding for paramedics and police and that we should not divert the funding without carefully assessing how it impacts our safety. He had long and specific answers for every question I had.
DeleteMaybe you should call him too and ask him some questions?
"...the first UUT increase promised funding for paramedics and police and that we should not divert the funding without carefully assessing how it impacts our safety."
DeletePerfect example of a non-answer.
$100,000 ain't gonna cut it. The city is in bad shape, and Colin's roommate helped spend us there.
DeleteIt will be $800,000. I'll let you pick the employees you want to lay off to make up the rest.
DeleteHow can Colin be against the Alf, in the hopes that Sierra Madre will fill the area with shops in the biggest economic downturns in American history?
DeleteWhat exactly are Chris's qualifications? He is an insurance agent who brags about his ties to boy scouts and getting movies shown at the pool. That wasn't even his idea. Troop 4 has 20 ASMs, makes Chris not very impressive. The vagueness about Chris's job then saying he is a financial expert? Yeah right. He isnt even qualified, and isn't getting my vote!
ReplyDeleteMy son was in troop 4 with Chris. He was involved, not the best ASM, not the worst. But being an ASM doesn't qualify Hun for much except tying some knots and taking kids backpacking. I don't live in Sierra Madre, but love this blog. It's like watching a train wreck. Pure entertainment.
DeleteGood article Crawford. Everything you just wrote just secured my vote for Colin.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Josh
DeleteI Vote No for Colin based on his post card what a bunch of Mosca crap.
ReplyDeleteThat a stupid reason not to support someone.
DeleteI think it's a good reason. Good for you,9:45
DeleteUnfortunately, from the past history of Sierra Madre politics, paranoia and fear seems to be the legacy we as residents are left with.
ReplyDeleteWe have had council people who were downright dishonest, using outside money and political parties to fund them, and not so much interested in the town's welfare. Just winning anyway you can spin yourself has become the order of the day.
Please stop the attacks, I know it's tough, but it only hurts the town.
Look at your favorites, who supports them, and where they get donations.
This speaks more about a candidate than what blather comes out of their pie holes.
I just got an e-mail from a long timeTattler reader asking me to boycott the site. Looks like this article has upset the Tattler base.
ReplyDeleteI got the same email and am forwarding it on. Enough is enough. We all know Colin and know How lucky we are that he is running. This article is just foolish. Bye-bye tattler, I for one am going to listen to the recommendation. After 5 years of reading the tattler everyday, today will be the last time I ever log on. Time to send a message that there are consequences for your actions.
DeleteDestroying heroes is a national past time. Sierra madre's no different.
Delete10:09, I'm sure your loss will be keenly felt.
DeleteDo you think that perhaps Josh Moran is trying to organize a boycott against the Tattler in the same way he tried to organize a boycott against Sierra Madre Businesses who disagreed with this political views?
DeleteAnd 10:10, who's the hero?
10:09 am, 5 years? Really?
DeleteIf someone has been reading The Tattler for 5 years when it has only existed for 4, well they're probably qualified to vote for a candidate that will tell you whatever you want to hear.
DeleteI appreciate the truthful discussions that take place on the Tattler, even though I find the obsessive accusations from all sides tiresome. At least people write what they really think. Sometimes it's helpful, sometimes it's junk, but that's free speech for you.
DeleteThe Tattler is the thermometer that takes the community's temperature. Looks to me like we're in for another few years of what we've been seeing for the last two. Sierra Madre will continue to be run by slick pols. Too bad.
DeleteIt's just the realtors and the silly middle age women who are attracted to Colin......pretty disgusting.
DeletePlease Monday Modette, delete the whole post. I keep forgetting Monday is Net nanny day.
ReplyDeleteIs there more than one moderator for this blog?
DeleteGreat article Crawford - thoughtful and on point. I will decide who to vote for based on the answers to the questions you put forth about the police, the UUT, and also answers to "Will you protect and enforce Measure V, the Canyon Code, the Hillside Management Zone, and downsize city staff to a level that is appropriate for this small town?"
ReplyDeleteAgain, great article, thanks.
Another great post. Thank you,9:58
DeleteIt pains me to say this, but I did actually have a positive reaction to Joe Mosca when I saw the postcard with the dog and Bailey Canyon in the background.
ReplyDeleteI thought that his choice of setting showed that he cared about nature.
I have wised up some since then.
The cards are just decoration.
I agree, anyone can say anything. It's all about actions. Has Colin been pro-preservation on the general plan?
ReplyDeleteJoe was pro-preservation along with Don Watts and Kurt Zimmerman until push came to shove on Bart Doyle's Grandview water pipe scam, then voted with John and Enid, at Bart's urging.
DeleteOnly two residents got up and pleaded with along with Zimmerman and Watts to not fall for this. Who were they?
Linda Thornton and MaryAnn MacGillivray.
Nope, he's been pretending to be on the side of common sense, but make no mistake about it, just like his pal, John Hutt....he is not the friend of reasonable development.
DeleteAt least the issue is clearly drawn. You favor redevelopment or you wish to preserve the small town feeling which attracted most of the residents to purchase here.Surveys have confirmed that the majority wish it to remain a small community. As expected, placing faux candidates on our city council, flying under false colors, has been in play for a number of years.Outing such a candidate should alert us to the need for careful consideration a to the experience as well as to the maturity of the candidate. We need to verify who these candidates really are before we stamp our vote....
ReplyDeleteGreat post 10:47.
DeleteBest post of the week.10:47
DeleteYou spelled it out very clear.
If you don't get it....you shouldn't be voting.
I remember the snarling mob that showed up the night of our last City Council reorganziation. Joe's people. Good to see that spirit is still alive.
ReplyDelete"Colin supports Measure V." Pleeeeeeease!

DeleteThat happened while Colin was living in town.
Yeah, you're right, I don't remember this guy fighting to save the hillsides.
Delete10:47, it was a self-righteous snarling mob. They believed that their dear hearted friend had been smeared, and they came to stand up for all that is good and decent.
ReplyDeleteI kid you not. That was one effective lie.
Based on their success last go around, I guess they see no reason for those tactics to change.
DeleteThe snarling mob didn't come to stand up for Joe Mosca, it came to stand up for over-development in town.
ReplyDeleteThat snarling mob was nowhere to be seen during Joe's last Council meeting or at his going away party.
Lookie here,
Deletemost people in this town support keeping big development out of Sierra Madre's downtown, it's neighborhoods, it's hillsides.
Our property values and our safe and secure lifestyles are of utmost important.
Downtown investors, be damned. You are not our friends.
Josh Moran was a very vocal opponent of Measure V, In fact, he's so pro-development that he even opposed the rest of the Council's modest efforts to protect the Canyon.
ReplyDeleteNow he's not only Colin housemate, but Colin's biggest cheerleader.
Colin's supporters posting today, need to explain why a Council Member who wants to bulldoze the downtown and our Canyon is supporting Colin's election bid.
Some people think, some people believe. Chris's supporters think, Colin's supporters believe.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Tea Party candidates are unworthy of my vote, what do you think?
DeleteI'd say you watch a lot of cable tv news.
DeleteYou mean Fox News, right?
DeleteYes, being informed is a strike against you with this crowd.
DeleteMSNBC news to be exact
Deleteomg, is it really coming down to Fox vs. MSNBC?
Deleteif I understand correctly, Colin is currently a LAPD detective?
ReplyDeletehow in the world will he have the time to serve as a Councilman?
it's not like he works for a utility company (Buchanan/SoCal Edison) that gives unlimited free time to work within the community to achieve corporate sales goals
Poster 11:01 makes an excellent point. I think Colin has some very positive attributes. His biggest supporters, however, are the same DIRTS that fought against Measure V and think building to the lot lines in the Canyon is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteI waiting to hear, why those people are behind Colin.
Colin is obviosuly something of a political genius. He has convinced the development people that he is pro-development, and they are supporting him overwhelmingly. And then there are the slow growth advoctaes, and he has won a lot of their support as well. How do you manage to do that?
ReplyDeleteNo, his handlers are the same political genius's who gave us Joe Mosca and Josh Moran
DeleteThe police officer's union encourages their members to run for city council so they can negociate cushy contracts for the union.
DeleteHe is nice and good looking.
DeletePoster 8:53 and other readers angry at Crawford, why don't you read the entire article before you mischaracterize what he wrote. He's not calling Colin a metrosexual, he's criticizing Colin's metrosexual-like campaign -- a campaign that's short on specifics and heavy on the touchy-feely sentiments.
ReplyDeleteexactly right, he's pointing out that it likely comes from the same PR people who worked for Josh Moran and Joe Mosca.
DeleteThat alone speaks volumns.
Just like homophobic Christians abhor the act, but not the person?
DeletePoster 11:11, it's not as difficult as you might think; especially, when you are dealing with an uninformed and gullible electorate. If you want some pointers, shoot Joe
ReplyDeleteMosca an email.
11:11, very good observation.
ReplyDeleteThere are two people in this town, whose opinions I really value:
ReplyDeleteKurt Zimmerman
Don Watts.
Who are they endorsing?
MaryAnn MacGillivray
DeleteThus far, Kurt and Don have endorsed MaryAnn.
ReplyDeleteThanks to you Crawford we may be spared another fiasco ala Mosca.Moran and Nancy! One would think we would finally get it but we keep falling for the phonies. We better get this one right because they will be in here with their bulldozers.."tout de suite"
ReplyDeleteIt is just amazing how EDUCATED people fall for so many insignifant things like ADVERTISING. A postcard is only an advertisement.
ReplyDeleteFace it Sierra Madre, it is the person's policy's which count. Not who they live with, not all of what your opinions are, not John's opinions. John loves to stir the pot.
We are all exercising our right to free speech. But, we are not basing any of this on facts which are important for an election.
So what if one candidate is seen with someone we do not like? That is not the basis of a vote.
We have fallen into the great social networking pit of the teenage world of CYBERBULLYING to each other, about each other and ganging up about another without those people being able to defend themselves on the internet.
This is very dangerous.
Until we hear from the candidates, at a large forum, we should hold back
our opinions.
Our town is already divided enough. These attacks are labeled "mean girls"
in the cyberbullying world.
This has created more problems than solutions.
Let's re-think what we say on line....
People like to go a bit wild on politics. It is done on the radio, on cable news, and on-line. Before we go getting all politically correct and scold people for blowing off steam, please consider this. Where else in this town can people go to vent about politics? I think this blog provides a great service. You want to see the real Sierra Madre? It's right here. Warts and all.
DeleteThank you. People just got to lighten up a little, that's all.
DeleteTo call political arguments cyber-bullying is to minimize the real thing.
DeleteTeacher....
Deletethis poster spelled out the issues loud and clear.
AnonymousFeb 13, 2012 10:47 AM
At least the issue is clearly drawn.
Colin can have my vote as soon as he distances himself from Josh's development policies.
ReplyDeleteMr. Crawford,
ReplyDeleteWhen will your hard hitting expose of Chris Koeber appear on the Tattler? I am usually in lockstep with your opinions, but today you've jumped the shark. You seem to be following your feelings, and not dealing in much fact.
Not like the Colin post card I got thats chock full of insight, on the issues at hand in our community.
DeleteThis election is not about where the candidates stand on national or international issues nor is it about whether they belong to the Tea Party or the Democratic party. It's about where they stand on the issues impacting Sierra Madre residents.
ReplyDeleteAmen, Isn't it lunch time for all your realtors posting your love for Colin?
DeleteYou are all pathetic.
Poster 11:36. You're missing the point. Crawford's article is about how Colin is " not dealing in much fact."
ReplyDeleteHas anyone asked Josh about how he feels about being portrayed as everything that is bad about Sierra Madre? Some posters here seem very upset about Colin being compared to him.
ReplyDeletePolitics attracts people with egos made of iron.
ReplyDelete@11:53 To call someone metrosexual in an obviously denigrating way is not a political argument. It's entertainment. Just like the Romans entertained their uneducated masses persecuting others, John Crawford fiddles while our poor town is set aflame with gossip, rumours, and divisiveness.
ReplyDeleteYou need to supply the Tattler with a glossary of prohibited language.
Delete12:24 I don't think you're Claudius or you would have actually read the article. The argument is:
ReplyDelete"We are now into our third straight election where a metrosexual politician is conducting a strong campaign for City Council. A campaign that is heavy on visual appearances and expressions of deep caring, but with precious little being said about actual policy and the hard decisions this city faces. The "good guy" you really need to meet, many find likable, and cares deeply about the community, but who is as difficult to pin down on anything truly substantive as mercury."
Poster 11:26 writes that "so what if one candidate is seen with someone we do not like? That is not the basis of a vote."
ReplyDeleteI agree, but if you pay closer attention to many of the posts over the last few weeks, you will realize that they are not about Colin merely being seen with Josh. Instead, they discuss how Josh and the pro-development voting bloc (realtors, contractors, developers, mortgage brokers etc. ) in Sierra Madre, have come out to support Colin. That voting bloc has an economic incentive to elect Council Members, who will support policies and pass legislation encouraging development -- even if those policies and legislation harm Sierra Madre's village character.
Accordingly, it's politically naive to assume that this voting bloc is supporting Colin because he is a police officer or has an MBA. This voting bloc is supporting Colin because its members believe that he will vote for policies and legislation encouraging development. (Recall that Kurt Zimmerman was a former federal prosecutor and had a JD, when he was running for Council. Notwithstanding his creditials, this same voting bloc opposed Kurt because its members believed that he would vote against their financial interests).
I for one, can't wait to hear from Colin why he thinks that the realtors, contractors, developers, mortgage brokers etc in town are supporting him.
Sandi Siraganian is a realtor and I don't believe she supports Colin.
DeleteGood one 1:17.
DeleteIrrelevant, but funny.
Why irrelevant?
DeleteNicely put 12:43. This is the Joe Mosca, "the developers support me, but I'm a preservationist" all over again dreck.
ReplyDeleteBeing both with the developers and with the preservationists is like being a citizen of both North and South Korea. Or Israel and Syria. It doesn;t work in this town.
ReplyDelete...look back at the lawn sign color choices for the long line of candidates that Colin falls in step with: green on white, with outlines of the hillsides, hiker with dog, etc.
ReplyDeleteGot to love cognitive dissonance.
ReplyDelete12:43 is right. It's always about follow the money.
ReplyDeleteFocusing on money does make things simpler.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be great if the candidates would disclose all their financial contributions a week before the election, and not accept any contributions that wouldn't register by then?
Josh, who has turned out to be one of the worst Council Members in recent memory. (Note that nobody ever seems to defend him on the Tattler or anywhere else in print) was swept into office on a pro-civility campaign.
ReplyDeleteOnce he was elected, he got to be as nasty as he wanted. Who can forget the way he went after Faye Angus? In fact, the only Council Member nastier than Josh has been his "pro-civility" running mate Nancy Walsh, who threatened to "take out" members of a committe that dared to disagree with her.
I hope that this time, the voters don't believe any candidate who tells them that he's "running to restore civility." It's pure BS.
I was sick when they got elected, 1:14, I knew they were bad, but they are far worse than we thought!
DeleteCouncil member Moran comes across as a short-tempered and overly-emotional person. That's why he has to take out after anyone who disagrees with him.
DeleteThat explains way he's so hefty... must eat a lot of chinese food and pizza.
DeleteIt is kind of like the 2006 election. There were people who were in on the Mosca joke, and those who weren't.
ReplyDeleteGood post 1:18. Those who have worked so hard for preservation and fighting the DSP are going to be sick if this Braudrick guy gets elected and betrays their trust.
Delete@12:24 Very eloquent.
DeleteDon't you people, any of you people on either side, have jobs??? On my lunch break and thought I'd check in. So glad we are acting like we are in a sandbox. 163 neener nanner neener comments. Awesome.
DeleteHey, Mr. Lunchbreak..... pull my finger.
DeleteI actually have a computer where I work 1:52.
Delete1:52
DeleteAll the realtors have computers! Crawford once caught Carol Canterbury flaming people on the old Foothill Blog from the Webb Martin office.
I remember reading about that on that old blog.
Shoot, 2:29 pm, I'd go as far as to say anyone who reads this blog has a computer! How's that for a bit of real info?
Delete@2:16 Hope your employer knows what you were doing at 2:16pm.
DeleteAnd people are real good at googling here and using that fancy wikipedia thing.
DeleteFrom a police psychological study:
ReplyDeletePolice work is often regarded as an extremely stressful occupation, and officers typically suffer a
variety of physiological, psychological and behavioral stress effects. It has been argued that
particular attention should be given to occupational stress in policing, as its potential negative
consequences affect society in more direct and critical ways than stress in most other occupations.
Officers operating under severe and chronic stress may well be at greater risk of error, accidents
and over-reaction that can compromise their performance, jeopardize public safety and pose
significant liability costs to the organization. However, police officers are rarely provided with
effective stress management strategies to help alleviate these problems.
Say something wrong at a council meeting and boom dead as a laptop!
Another study also compares cop to the criminal element that is jailed. The brain waves are very similar. The only difference is that the cops have joined the gang of blue. The politicians and district attorneys are to kept the cops in line. The last thing Sierra Madre needs is another cop. We already are over policed with 36 officers as it is. We need a reduction of the police department, not another one. Vote no to Colin, the dirt representative.
DeleteAs the late Harry Truman stated"If you can"t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen"!
DeleteSame joke, but change the name of the newly elected council member in the punchline. Uggggh.
ReplyDeleteWhat is going on? This is CRAZY!!!
DeleteWonderful reading.Thank you for "Outing" the newest lackey to grace our political landscape. The duplicitous corporate scum has caused enough chaos and turmoil within our ranks.Time for them to explore other vistas..ie Tide water, mud flats as well as desert gulleys..Better still maybe they should get a real job!
ReplyDeleteWith the exception of Nancy Walsh, who is retired, all of the current Councilmembers have "real" jobs. Of the candidates, only John Carpoccia is "retired". Employed, formerly employed, and educated. Which is more than can be said abut many of the ignoramuses who visit this blog.
DeleteDid I read some of the above posts correctly? Colin and Josh Moran share a residence? Really?
ReplyDeletePretending to be new here, I see...
DeleteHoly hits, Batman! Did this piece get more than the Mattheson Affair?
DeleteSo many readers! Just like The Enquirer.
DeleteHow many hits, Boss?
ReplyDeleteHello! I want to thank Marie, 9:14 am poster who states that Colin told her that, yes, he is living with Josh Moran, and paying him rent money. If Mr. Braudrick is as brilliant as his defenders claim, why can't he see the incredible confilict of interest here? Isn't he supposed to have an MBA? Aren't all MBA candidates required to take an ethics course? Certainly the LAPD requires ethics classes. Where was Colin?
ReplyDeleteNow if Josh can only get Nancy to move in and there is a Quorum if Colin wins. Does that mean there would be a Brown act violation?
DeleteIt shows that Sierra Madre is over the deceptive tactics of the Troll, his Minions and the Selective Few. The DIRT wants to continue to control this town no matter the cost. It is nice to see the dialogue and the smoke screen disappearing. I wish Colin no ill feelings, but I feel he is the wrong person for the job. So I have to say VOTE it is the American way. But please vote NO for Collin, we just do not need the same crowd in control. We need change, the change that Colin cannot provide, starting with the Firing of our City Manager, Elaine Agu-lair. When the CRA audit happens, then and only then, will we see the true consequences of her direction and the advice of the City Attorney.
ReplyDeleteHow's that glitter clean up going?
ReplyDeleteTell us, tell us. What is the readership like today?
ReplyDeleteHey, pace yourselves! We've got four more candidates to skewer! For myself, I'm looking forward to learning about Gene Goss and Chris Koerber. MaryAnn is pretty much an open book; she's been beaten up by the DIRTS and the SMVFD so many times it's beyond understandable why she runs. John Capoccia? Seems like a thoroughly likeable guy and Wow! can he put together a sentence. But in the end they'll all go under the laser of Tattlerists!
ReplyDeleteThank you John and Tattlers keep up the good work!!!
DeleteIn a perfect world, we would select a candidate based on their clear position on the issues of importance to us. Unfortunately, most politicians tend to speak in touchy feely terms and never give us a straight answer. I think the "issues" addressed on Colin's website fit that bill.
ReplyDeleteIn lieu of a clear position, I look at the judgement of the candidate. To hear that Colin is living with Josh Moran, well that tells me everything I need to know about Colin's judgement.
If I'm commenter 200, do I get a prize???
ReplyDelete
