The standing joke in Sierra Madre is that since the Police Department can never talk about an ongoing crime investigation, chances are pretty good that they'll never talk about it at all. The investigations continue basically until people forget about it, at which time the entire futile enterprise just disappears. Which perhaps is the reason for not talking about anything. After all, what is the point of encouraging public speculation on issues that are just not going to resolve well? The EVG investigation being a good example. The only time we hear about that one is when it's raised here as an example of local law enforcement inconsequence. At which time we invariably hear from the SMPD that the investigation is still continuing, but naturally they can't talk about it.
The Robert Matheson situation is perhaps the most discussed criminal case here in recent years. Or at least it is at the resident level. But as far as any official discussion goes there has been an almost complete news blackout. As a matter of fact, the only time either the Mayor or Mayor Pro Tem even acknowledged the arrest of the noted Sierra Madre resident and bon vivant in Nova Scotia for trafficking in child pornography was after some pointed public comment from Fay Angus regarding their complete lack of leadership on the issue.
But the gist of their comments that evening were to deny that they had anything to do with the crime. Which, while certainly a relief for all concerned, was also a rather odd confession for them to make since nobody, and certainly not Fay Angus, had ever once suggested that they did.
But enough nostalgia. I received a "Google News Alert" e-mail yesterday from The Chronicle Herald (click here), the newspaper straight out of Halifax, Nova Scotia that first broke the news about Robert Matheson's run in with the law there over the laptop loaded with child pornography he was carrying. And it now appears that another traveler of his behavioral ilk was popped at the very same place as Bob a month later.
Child porn case may lead to plea bargain - An American who allegedly had child pornography on his laptop computer when he arrived at the Halifax airport in December is trying to work out a plea bargain with prosecutors.
Edward Manak, 22, of Webster, Mass., returned to Dartmouth provincial court Thursday to face Customs Act charges of smuggling and possessing illegal goods and a Criminal Code charge of possessing child pornography.
Either child pornographers are somehow strangely drawn to Nova Scotia, or the authorities there are just really good at catching them. The article then had this observation to make:
Last October, agents at the airport found child pornography on the laptop of a man from Sierra Madre, Calif. Robert William Matheson, 67, pleaded guilty in December to possession and smuggling charges. He was sentenced to 108 days in jail on top of the 12 days he spent in custody before he posted bail.
So let's see, Matheson was sentenced to 108 days in jail on Dec 13, which means he will be released on or about March 30. Or next month if you choose to view it that way. And since it took the notified agency, U.S. Homeland Security, a full two months before they searched his million dollar wickiup on Liliano, chances are reasonably good that whatever evidence might have been there at one point was long gone before the Fab Feds got around to doing their jobs. After all, Bob did have a roommate, and then there was also the young man he was traveling with on that fateful day back in October. He had been returned to the U.S. a week later.
Now I could be wrong, of course. It doesn't happen too often, yet nobody is perfect. But if no evidence was found at Matheson's by then scrubbed home, there might not be any legal reason to put the guy in jail when the Canadians expel him from their country in March. Much less try him in court for anything. And if this does turn out to be the case, apparently it will mean that Robert Matheson will be returning to his Sierra Madre home a free man at the end of next month. Presumably to pick up the pieces of his shattered life and seek some peace.
I do know that the City doesn't like to discuss such topics with residents, and certainly not when it is something as unpleasant and controversial as this. But I do have a question for them. What arrangements has the City of Sierra Madre made to deal with this contingency?
I think it is a fair one to ask.

Will Matheson be put on a registered sex offender list?
ReplyDeleteParents deserve to know about this threat to children.
No not unless arrested, tried and convicted in the states. Which does not appear to be the case in this situation. The only plus the we have is that just about everyone in towns knows about his conviction in Canada. So Matheson will have to move to a new town where no one knows about his past.
DeleteWhich Realtor will get the job to sell Castle Matheson?
DeleteBetter ask if there are any realtors who will not take the job.
DeleteCan't you hear the spiel?
Look at the lovely layout, the sound construction.A guy who was into child pornography is the seller.Just look at the million dollar view!Wonderful, isn't it?
If there is evidence of others involved in this child pornography ring, here in Sierra Madre, we deserve to know.
ReplyDeleteWe the citizen of Sierra Madre would be the last to know. It's an on going investigation as the story line goes
DeleteThe SMPD does one thing well, and that is give out traffic tickets. And while I guess it sounds impressive to say that US Homeland Security is involved, that two month delay shows you just how high up their priority list we are.
ReplyDeleteAs is usually the case in Sierra Madre, we are on our own.
Traffic tickets are the only reason we have over 36 police officers. To harass the citizens of this town. We need to shut down our Police Department. Follow the example of La Canada save over 1.2 million and have better policing and not have to sub out the crime investigations.
Delete08:54 actually SMPD has 15 sworn police officers right now. But way to totally lie about the numbers in order to justify your conclusion.
DeleteOne thing is certain: a couple months in jail did not alter his proclivities. His perverted ideas are in tact, and perhaps accelerated due to his enforced abstinence.
ReplyDeleteGood for the crime fighters in Nova Scotia. It would be interesting to know where his Massachusits guy was heading, and he is of the age that Matheson was preying on. Nova Scotia has wonderful villages and many places for these guys to hide in the full light of day...with the internet their victem and customers are just a click away.
ReplyDeleteThe only time we hear from the city is when they want more money. Get your postcard yet?
ReplyDeleteA pitch for increasing our UUT by a "lame duck" Mayor?
DeleteHow about a rebuttal by the lone opposition voice on our council.
MaryAnn MacGillivray?
Pretty sure the party is over for Matheson. Did you see the Tran story? Tatts heard that first too.
ReplyDeleteI did see the report of Mayor Tran's guilt for accepting bribes- and did you see the smiling picture of him that ran with it?
DeleteYou can tell that all is fine and good on planet Tran. One of those pols that never misses an opportunity for face time.
I think the Sierra Madre Police Department has the right officers on the force and in this case on the job. When Matheson gets back our officers are just going to wait until he falls a sleep in his car so they can shoot him in the butt. Then Matheson can sue for a big pay off and retire in luxury. Welcome to law enforcement in Sierra Madre. The police department will not be able to talk about the case though it will be an on going "shot em in the butt" investigation.
ReplyDeleteOur PD is a secret department run out of the bunker under city hall by unnamed former elected officials.
ReplyDeleteHe should be listed as a child molester, according to US law, subject to rules that limit him from living or frequenting these places that are within a certain distance from schools and parks.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone knows the specific distance, let us know, so if we see him violating that rule, we can inform the police to have him arrested.
Thanks for publishing his picture.
Matheson's picture needs to be posted everywhere in town. Every business, every city building, every school.
DeleteLooks like he will be back in time to vote for his favorite candidate.
ReplyDeleteWill Bob be hosting any campaign kickoffs this year?
ReplyDeleteI think all of the kick off parties will have happened by the time he is released.
DeleteI think he knows the "jig is up" in Sierra Madre, he is too well recognizable, and will end up moving on to some other town with well meaning and innocence people to prey upon.
ReplyDeleteI feel sorry for the people in Novas Scotia who will have to take the "smear" like us in Sierra Madre are having to deal with.
Why would Nova Scotians be smeared? These were "travelers" and they were caught! I'd say the TSA should take note of the Canadian's methods.
DeleteAs far as Sierra Madreans being smeared, the town's response was immediate and resonated in every quarter. Stop talking trash and be proud that the Tattler outted the weirdo.
Amen to that. The Tattler outs a lot of goblins.
Deletecan't imagine the gall it would take to move back to your house where outraged citizens held a candle light vigil for the victems of your disgusting child pornograhphy crime.
ReplyDeleteThe best thing that can be done in Sierra Madre, is to have him publicly ejected, so Sierra Madre can show it has zero tolerance for these monsters.
ReplyDeleteI cannot help but think, these pervs were attracted to Sierra Madre by web sites like the Cum Quat with a Mayor who endorsed it.
ReplyDeleteIt's like saying "ya'll are welcome here", come and stay a spell......
He is part of the dirt crowd. The Troll is under a federal investigation so the Mayor and minions puts him on the school board. I wonder what position the Mayor is going to place Matheson in.
ReplyDeleteDirector of the Department of Kilts.
DeleteMatheson needs to be known for what he is wherever he goes. It's common knowledge that these guys do not reform, and while we can be glad his time in out town is up, we can't be glad he'll be in some other town. I'm not sure how to go about it, but there has to be a way to make sure he's on a predators' lists like Megan's law, and people everywhere will know about him.
ReplyDeleteGood idea. Someone please let us know how we can do just that.
DeleteThe kid we save, may be our own!
Thanks for your post,9:31
Uh oh. Colin's yard signs are green.
ReplyDeleteJosh Moran's housemate. Just what we don't need on the city council.
DeleteIs the Mary's Market gang still campaigning for this latest fake?
Any facts there 12:03? If so, please tell us.
Delete12:07 the only facts are that Colin is rational, nice, and loves this town, unlike Tea Party Chris. And he coached little league for years and donated a kidney. He is one of the most stand up guys I have met. So you can try to attack him all you want. It wont stick because with him what you see is what you get.
DeleteThere is no doubt that Colin takes a good picture. And what you see is what you get. But when it comes to politics it is what you hear that you need to pay attention to. And I haven't herd much from Colin so far. With Chris you know exactly what you are going to get. Unwavering support for Measure V and a rigorous reform of this city's government. With Easy Colin? Who the hell knows?
DeleteLook at his website or talk to him. Go watch him at the GPSC meetings. You know what he stands for, you just dont like that he doesnt take sides. As I said he is a true stand up guy. As honest as they come too. So keep bashing him. It just makes you look like an idiot. Because everyone who knows him knows what he stands for and what kind of person he is. And the rest of the city is learning too. I know Chris well, he is a really nice guy. but his politics scare's the hell out of me. He will probably want too define what a family is. Trust me he will legislate morality the first chance he gets.
Delete"You know what he stands for, you just don't like that he doesn't take sides."
DeleteThat is quite a feat.
Great article in today's Pasadena Star News about the Alfington. Not up on the website,
ReplyDeletethough. "Housing project plans raise questions."
Is it going to come up online?
ReplyDeleteHope so.
DeleteArticle is now on-line on the PSN site. I added the link at the bottom of today's post.
DeleteCongrats Tattler!
DeleteWhat I remember best from that council meeting when Fay called the Mayor and the Mayor pro tem to task for their failure to help the community deal with this terrible event, was that the Mayor pro tem actually had the gall to say that Fay's speech was a "new low." Mr. Moran called Ms. Angus's words "a new low." Mind boggling.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they were talking about themselves. If so, it would have been a rare moment of clarity for them.
DeleteThey think everything is about them.
Delete9:31 you are RIGHT!! These people...mostly males cannot be reformed and in most cases feel no guilt. He will have the gall to move back here and act like it is OK. He will continue doing what he loves best, and will hide behind any guise he can to be near to children: a church, a school, an ice cream truck, a candy store, or any social network to cyberbully anyone to get them into his web of deceit.
ReplyDeleteI wish we, as a county, would pass laws to protcct CHILDREN and TEENS, and make sure every predator would be required to have a monitoring device around their wrists and ankles. Registering their names is not enough and if you remember, checking "them" out at their house did not work for Jaycee Dugard.
We have run out of room in our jails. When are we going to stop wishing it would go away and do something? It is happening now. That internet is clicking with more child porns like Matheson. We must take care of our children
and focus on laws which protect them.
Sexual predators can not be rehabilitated. It's in their DNA. How horrific, even thinking that matheson would be out of prison is horrifying. Pitch forks & torches, anyone?
ReplyDeleteOther cities go to great lengths to protect children from sexual predators. I would hope that a full service city like ours would do the same.
DeleteMoran will never protect our children, he is a child and out-of-touch with reality. Buchanan is self-centered and both of them endorsed the "Cum Quat" and saw no danger in this fun for our city and embarassed himself.
ReplyDeleteLookie Here wouldn't protect a child from a predator because she listens to people who tell her to protect "Cum Quat" types.
funny how fast those types are cropping up...
he returns in time to help out Buchanan's candidates for Council....
ReplyDeleteMy wife has ben victimizized worse than you culd imagine as it has change her form of life and it is my job to deal with it and most people write it off as common mishapa of of a relationship but it is not so easy when you are to raise two children you love when the abused has multiple sclerorsis. I just wish someone could understand how much of an uphill battle each day is for me trying to save someone God has chosen to save. Not always easy as the Bible says when you Love the Lord.
