Why Won't Gene Goss Fire Yolanda Miranda?

Sue Levoe making even less sense than usual
So we are now in our third day since The Tattler's revelations first emerged regarding Gene Goss's campaign treasurer Yolanda Miranda and her role in the corrupt affairs of the Calderon family. We still have no word from the candidate about this. Can it be Gene has no problem with her work on behalf of a disgraced State Senator arrested by the FBI for taking a $100,000 bribe?

The excuse might have been made that he had no idea, and perhaps he was only taking the advice of Miranda's other notable Sierra Madre client, John Harabedian. But unfortunately too much time has passed for that one to fly anymore. The assumption must now be made that Gene Goss doesn't have a problem with a Calderon financial operative handling his campaign finances, and will do nothing.

Look at it this way. Let's say you were a candidate for an elective office, one where the trust and faith of the people are vital to your being able to do the job with honor and distinction. And then something like the following Sacramento Bee article was brought to your attention. What would your reaction be?

California state Sen. Ron Calderon sets up legal defense fund (link): Well-known for fundraisers at out-of-state golf courses and plush resorts, state Sen. Ron Calderon has a new reason to solicit money from friends, family and the interest groups that do business in California's Capitol.

The Democrat from Montebello has established a legal defense fund to cover expenses related to his "public corruption investigation," according to a letter Calderon filed with the secretary of state this week.

"These funds will be only to pay the attorney's fees and other legal costs related to the defense of the candidate as well as administrative costs directly related to compliance with record keeping and reporting requirements," says the letter signed by Calderon and Yolanda Miranda, treasurer of Calderon's committee.

Is this the kind of association you would want for your campaign if you were a candidate? Having the treasurer of a disgraced California state Senator's criminal defense fund handling your City Council campaign finances could cause considerable damage to your reputation. You'd make a change, right?

A reader took note of Gene Goss's delicate position in the Yolanda Miranda matter yesterday, and posted this new information for us:

In a Pasadena Star-News story about the Bell corruption scandal, they identify Yolanda Miranda and Associates as "a Covina-based political consulting firm." This political consulting firm is listed as Gene Goss' treasurer and has received $250 from Gene Goss' campaign.

Gene Goss is one of those people who claims he is going to keep it local, but doesn't. So basically Gene is lying and has been lying from the beginning of his campaign.

Human nature, guilty people have been making florid promises about their virtue from time immemorial. "The lady protests too much, methinks." - Hamlet, Act 3, Scene 2

The Pasadena Star News article our literary commenter refers to above is called "Cooley terms Bell scandal 'corruption on steroids'" (link). And wouldn't you know it, Gene Goss's campaign treasurer gets a mention here as well.

(Councilmember George) Cole, Bell's former mayor, has several long-standing ties to the San Gabriel Valley. In 2006, Cole worked with Jeff Monical, who runs Lavell Communications, a political consulting firm in Alhambra. Cole's connection to the San Gabriel Valley also includes a long affiliation with Yolanda Miranda and Associates, a Covina-based political consulting firm.

The former mayor is also linked to state Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, who represents South Pasadena. In 2004, Cole paid Cedillo's spokesman Conrado Terrazas $2,816 for "professional services" related to Cole's run for Bell City Council.

At a recent Monterey Park dinner honoring Cole for charitable work he performed in Montebello, Cedillo declined to discuss the association. In recent days Cole bragged to associates that his political ties made him an unlikely target in the criminal probe.

Look, either Gene Goss fires Yolanda Miranda, or it will have to be assumed here in that he has no problem with her Bell and Calderon associations. And rather than the "independent" he hopes to be thought of, instead he is in the thrall of Sacramento-style corruption.

All of which would mean that Unclean Gene completely lacks the ethical compass necessary to serve on our City Council.

Gene Goss Fudges On His Pledge To Keep His Campaign Local

On his website Gene Goss makes the following "pledge" (link):

The trend in recent years of outside organizations trying to influence Sierra Madre politics is unacceptable. Therefore, in the interest of the independence of this town, my solemn commitment to fellow Sierra Madreans is that I will absolutely not solicit nor will I accept any support from political parties, outside political organizations, outside political interest groups, outside political consultants, labor unions, law firms, developers, etc. All of my campaign expenditures will be funded by individual donations or self-financed.

In today's Pasadena Star News (link), Sierra Madre beat reporter Zen Vuong published an article that covers Tuesday night's debate at City Hall. Here is what she reports Gene Goss as saying:

“I believe my longevity in town and my experience as a parent sets me apart in my understanding of our community,” he said. “In terms of independence, I have taken a pledge not to accept campaign contributions from political organizations, developers, law firms, labor unions or any other organization.”

Notice the difference? Goss has gone from saying he will not accept any outside support, to "I have taken a pledge not to accept campaign contributions" from outside organizations.

Where I come from that is known as fudging. Goss has accepted outside support from both the United Teachers of Pasadena union (which he actually went out and asked for), and Yolanda Moranda's Covina-based political consulting firm. And he is now willing to rearrange the words in his pledge in order to keep that kind of support.

Perhaps we should take this to mean he intends to keep Yolanda Miranda.

Other Goss Nonsense

In the Star News article Goss claims that we need the UUT increase to make sure we have clean water. Any qualified candidate should know the UUT monies DO NOT go to the water enterprise. Even in an Elaine Aguilar run City Hall. Didn't we just get socked with a 61% water rate increase that is supposed to take care of that?

Besides, everyone knows that Measure UUT is to help pay for Cadillac health care plans and municipal employee union pension padding. Especially Gene Goss. It's why he's here and running.

Noah Nothing

A quote from Noah Green in Zen's Star News piece regarding the UUT:

"'What that really means is that the city employees who work here but generally can’t afford to live here are going to suffer layoffs and pay cuts, and I do not think that’s fair. I am in support of the UUT because I want my streets paved, I want my police here in three minutes when there is an emergency, and I want my water to be clean.’"

Say what? Again we have a candidate absurdly conflating the UUT with the Water Department. And why does he care more about the city staff than the residents? He said it just like that. Does he hate townies that much?

What is going on with KGEM and the City Council debate reruns?

I got a call from an aggravated neighbor last night about the total lack of debate reruns on SMTV3. She had called the Monrovia-based cable content provider KGEM to find out what is going on. It turns out they had just one re-airing of the debate on their schedule, and that was last night at 11 PM.

So can it be Goss and Green did so poorly that City Hall decided to cut reruns down to one solitary time?

Maybe they see it as an important financial move.

  1. Goss's Yolanda Miranda association is really troubling. I guess he could have argued at the beginning that he didn't know. The longer time goes by, the worse it gets for him. The Star News linked her to other unsavory and criminal scandals including the Bell scandal. There was a city council candidate a few years ago in South Pasadadena named Suentes who was linked to alot of bad operators including Jeff Monical and he got trounced in the election. People like Jeff Monical and Yolanda Miranda are key operators with the public employee unions. The interesting thing is how is Yolanda Miranda being paid. What happens is the police union and other public employee unions don't want to tarnish a candidate by donating to their campaign directly. Or in the case of Goss, the candidate also tries to garner support from residents by refusing any support from the unions. The unions then support the candidate by paying for the candidate's political consultants or in the case of Yolanda Miranda as Goss's treasurer. This is how the candidate and the unions deceive the voters. Once the candidate gets elected to office, the unions get the return on their investment by the candiate voting for higher salaries, benefits and pensions for the public employee union members. Candidates who are simply union stooges just plug into the union machine like Harabedian did when he hired Yolanda Miranda. All I can say is follow the money. Who is paying Yolanda Miranda and any other consultant helping the Goss campaign? That will be your answer. I may sound like Deep Throat but that's how the union's work. Overt support is now working against candidates because the voters are starting to wake up to union influence. Thus, the unions have to support their chosen candidates through the back door. Remember how the police union supported a candidate because that candidate was "tough on crime" or so and so was the "law and order" candidate. Finally people woke up to the fact that the only reason the police unions supported a candidate was because that candidate was most likely to give them higher salaries, pensions and benefits once elected to office. Being "tough on crime" had nothing to do with police union support. The voters need to wake up and see through the deceit. The UUT Tax is the same way. Why do they always say that if the tax doesn't pass, the only option is to cut things that will most scare the voters. Isn't there anything else to cut? Its because they can't say that if we don't pass the tax, we will have to cut all the waste and inefficiency out of the budget. That wouldn't work too well would it? So its the paramedics, the police response times, the library and the water that has to be cut - the scary stuff is always the only option.

    1. in summary, the entire Yes on the UUT suggestions and misinformation is basically BS

they are saying multiple things that aren't true, which is typical, enough of the BS will stick and it will be reprinted in the Looney View News, without question otherwise the paper will lose the SM ad revenue for posting legal notices and in return, it appears, that the Mt View News does not have to show actual proof of performance such as printer certification of actual print run.

call their bluff, let them close the library and then the seniors will really have something to complain without Nancy Walsh campaigning for the UUT and an opposing view is not allowed or facts verfied.

this all started with Councilmembers lying to us and it's the same crowd still buzzing around city hall, jeez we elected two utility company lawyers and neither recused themselves from any discussions about development even though their votes always supported development, which benefited themselves, especially if John has stock in SoCal Edision, that's old news but anybody he endorses or any cause he supports is a tainted opinion
if he's trying to peddle the UUT to us as threats

Nancy Walsh used her term on the Council for zero purpose or results and used her pulpit to spread complete misinformation or ill-prepared with facts, her rant against volunteers serving at her will and saying that she could vote on special water tax incentives to businesses because "she/they can'

If the UUT measure doesn't pass, there will still be a 10% tax on all utilities until 2015, and even then, there will be no need to cut services due to the increased water, electric, and gas rates. And, it won't drop to 6% until 2016. Help combat the lies. Post the facts on your social media sources.

According to this report from two weeks ago we could return to normal weather patterns next year due to our friend El Nino.

El Nino is a weather pattern Mr. Goss should be familiar with, but one which a newbie from the east would not be familiar with. In all fairness, it's a west coast thang. One more reason why Mr. No Britches isn't ready to lead, or even advise a curmudgeon like me.

A vote to hike your utilities tax, including your water is not a temporary squeeze. If it floods your garden next year, giving you more water than you can actually use, lucky me and you still get to pay that tax.

  30. http://www.sgvtribune.com/opinion/20140320/our-april-8-endorsements-in-san-gabriel-valley-whittier-editorial

Pasadena Star-News/San Gabriel Valley Tribune endorse Arizmendi, Delmar and Goss..recommends a NO on Measure UUT.

"Noah Green’s good ideas are mostly confined to the excellent one of promoting gray-water solutions to the drought problem, and he needs more time in town to understand issues.

We strongly endorse the other three: Rachelle Arizmendi, who has served on the Community Services Commission and understands budgets from her management job in a large nonprofit. She’s for fiscal discipline, laments the town’s polarization and wants the utility tax hike sunsetted. Denise Delmar chaired a general plan committee and would be an excellent advocate for it, and her professional career in human resources will help the small and cash-strapped City Hall staff. Gene Goss, an American government professor, has the longest experience in town, and is a consummate volunteer.

We recommend a No vote on extending a high 10 percent utility tax that citizens were promised would decline."

    1. except we should not vote for Gene because he us fully funded and supported by the same motely crue that screwed up the city in the first place, he is itching to push new development ideas and has extremely poor listening skills cause all he does is talk and talk about what he thinks or the same old development BS that comes from his primary supporter, John Buchanan who works for SoCal Edision.

the best case is that Gene comes in a distant third with half the total votes cast for 1st and 2nd and Noah gets 100 sympathy votes cause that is what he is asking for after living here for only 18 months. He's that clueless with the city, traditions, festivites and why Measure V was passed by the voters and Goss is opposed to Measure V, so is Green according to who supports the two candidates.

  33. nice Sue, copy and past the same BS onto social media - except social media works both ways and to start off a social media campaign with complete lies....lol

that is what sucks about the Mtn View News, it's Susan Henderson's paper, one she had a legal judgement ruled against her several times and defaulted on paying awarded damages to her former co-owners, Susan will not print an opposing editorial and prints only letters to the editors that are Yes on UUT and present the same misinformation cause if you hear it 10 times, it must be trure but it's all BS - the UUT and closing the library unless we vote Yes, it's completely a lie and this is the same group that lied to us about our water infrastructure collapsing unless we voted them authority to levy taxes and that was all BS - it was about covering up water bond money expenditures that were never accounted for and audits were voted down when rumors of the bond debt was circulating and being denied by the Councils including our current Council and candidates Goss and Green.

  34. Noah missed my house on his walk around the canyon. He went to the neighbors and even left them a flyer with the "hi, sorry I missed you." Not wasting time or campaign materials on my family as his handlers (Nancy, Doyle, et al) know I would not vote for their candidate in a New Jersy/Oakland minute. Then one of Goss's sillinesses is that he is the only candidate that has walked the entire city twice in two years. Lier! Actually told me that he had difficulty finding parking therefore couldn't stop by for the "chat" with me. So, I missed him two years ago as well as this year! Phooey!

    1. if wallking the city is a cause to be a Councilman, I should be King Poo Bah because I've pushed my kid in his stroller at least a dozen times if not 50 times.

he's just throwing out BS and seeing what sticks against the barn wall

    2. 4:54, Goss says he walks the city but can't find parking?

does he understand that walking the city means you leave your car at home or is he just walking a block here and there?

    3. Goss said he was walking the Canyon and couldn't find parking. 10:00 pm is probably Green posting as anonymous because everyone else in town knows there's no parking in the Canyon.

  35. If you are out driving and you see poor old Gene looking for doors to knock on, lean out your window and yell "Yolanda!" He likes it a lot.
