Four Of Those Endorsing Larry Torres's Board Of Ed Candidacy Are Pictured Here

From the folks that brought you One Carter ...

Over on the somewhat neglected SierraMadreNews.net website there is news of Bill Coburn's endorsement of Larry Torres for our PUSD Board of Ed seat. Which should not come as that much of a surprise. For reasons I have never quite understood, Bill has been carrying water for this town's now faded political establishment for quite some time now. His work for them has certainly not been making him rich.

There is quite a lot of fluff in the resume' SMN.net attempts to build for the largely undistinguished Mr. Torres. The first three reasons given by Coburn for his support of Larry are particularly nutrition free.

I'm sure that's nice. Who doesn't want to talk with someone who also talks with you? I think that is what most people would call a conversation. Give Larry a nice sleeveless sweater and who knows, perhaps he then turns into Fred Rogers? I am not certain that is going to serve anyone well, however. The PUSD Board of Ed can be a rough place, and Mr. Rogers might not be the kind of person you'd want fighting for the needs of your kids, or watching over your tax and bond dollars.

But even all of that goes out the window when you read down the page a little and discover this bolt from a world beyond:

I'm not sure, but I think that Bill Coburn's build up of Larry Torres as Mr. Rogers reincarnated just went right out the window with that bit of news.

Let's see if we can't revisit some of the notable failures of this rogue's gallery of governmental misfits.

- John Buchanan and Rob Stockly, along with Enid Joffe and Larry's kissin' cousin Tonja Torres, were on the 2004 City Council that approved the One Carter debacle, widely considered to be the worst land use decision ever made in Sierra Madre. Their faithlessness ended up costing this town millions of dollars in legal fees due to repeated developer lawsuits. Today, nearly a decade later, we could be going into yet another round of legal misery.

- Bart Doyle was the not quite a mastermind behind Sierra Madre's 2003 Water Bonds. A $6.75 million dollar boondoggle that we have since only made interest payments on. An act of gross financial irresponsibility that will cost the taxpayers of this town many millions of additional dollars as we attempt to pay off his mess. Bad Debt Bart was also behind some of the recent dicey bond action at the PUSD. We the taxpayers need people on the Board of Education who will at last tell Bart that his assistance there is no longer required. That might be a little beyond the skill set of Larry.

- Bill Bogaard is the current Mayor of Pasadena, and apparently has been so asleep at the wheel there that an employee was able to embezzle $6.4 million in taxpayer dollars right out from under his nose. Done over the course of 11 years no less, and Bogaard was Mayor there during all of them. God only knows what he does with his time at work.

- Chris Holden was exposed by The Center for Investigative Reporting (link) for allegedly having "donated" $199,000 in campaign money to obtain a very senior political position in the California State Assembly. This after having been in office for only a few months. Check out the article, but not on an empty stomach.

In my opinion one of the best ways to judge a candidate for any elective office is to see who it is he hangs out with. It appears that Larry Torres has some all too interesting friends.

  1. gotta love that Bill Coburn! He tries so hard to carry off the image of a solid reporter but he always fails miserably. My mamma always said that the next best thing to brains is silence and Bill certainly proves that to be true. although, Mod, sharing Bill's quotes with us all made my day start out with a hearty laugh - and That's a good thing.

    1. Bill doesn't live in town anymore. Talk about someone who is superfluous.

    2. and what town do you think bill lives in

    3. It doesn't matter what town Bill lives in. Crawford doesn't live in town anymore, and he still reports accurately and with relevance. It's the content that matters, and the shallow endorsement for Torres on Bill's site has no content. It is if he was searching for something good to say.

    4. If Bill doesn't live in town, has he disclosed it? Crawford's been transparent about it all along.

    7. The rumor I heard is his father in law sold the place he had been living in here, and Bill had to go and find something where the rents aren't so high. Sierra Madre not being a low rent kind of place.

  2. Your link to the Center for Investigative Reporting also notes the Gatto, also an endorser of the friendly Larry Torres, gave $258,000.00. wonder how much money he's give Torres?

    1. You also have to wonder how much of that money came from the pornography industry.

SANDRA SIRAGANIAN a Sierra Madre resident and mother of 3. has my vote.

  5. Larry Torres, the Manchurian Candidate.

Who the hell is this guy? Sure isn't a big time volunteer in Sierra Madre? I didn't know he existed.

  8. Mr. Torres has now been irreparably tainted by his endorsements. Some of the worst things that have happened to Sierra Madre originated with those people. I think I would trust Sandra Siraganian over any one of those people particularly when the kids are at stake here.

  9. I don't care who else is running besides Mr. Torres, one of those people will get my vote. If Torres is in the camp of the people who tried to ruin Sierra Madre, then he will never get my vote. We are still feeling the effects of bad decisions that were made by the likes of Doyle, Stockley and Buchanan. Torres truly has a rogue's gallery of supporters. Run for the hills from the guy. HIs wife was on the City Council and cast the vote against the citizens wanting to stop One Carter. Millions of dollars later we are still fighting that fight.

    1. I'm voting for Sandra Siraganian. She's a single Mom who raised three kids thru Sierra Madre Elementary & Middle. Sandra will do a great job representing the interests of the kids and parents in her district!

    2. I am a yellow dog voter. Anyone Bart or Buchanan endorses does not get my vote. I don't care who the other candidate is.

  10. Tonja Torres is married to Steve Torres, not Larry Torres. But they're related somehow, as the Tattler reported. Tonja and Steve are both attorneys.

    3. Apparently we need GPS tracking devices for both Torres and Coburn.

  11. I have often seen Sandra Siraganian at Sierra Madre school meetings. She has always fought for education, free of outside special interests.
Please vote for Sandra.....even if you don't have children in our schools. If enough people get on the school board like Siraganian. ...perhaps we can send our kids to public schools again!!!!!!
    SANDRA SIRAGANIAN FOR SCHOOL BOARD

  12. Tonja and Steve moved to Sierra Madre from Altadena in 2000 and promptly ran for City Council. Popular MO for the local politicos in this town. Do any of them actually live here? Ah, Sandra!

Bart Doyle says its a good idea - worked so well for the SMadre water dept.

  15. The main thing is that you vote on March 10th, preferably for Sandy, but please don't forget - this is a very important election. Your polls are at the three churches in town that usually have voting.

  16. Now it is time for democracy. A debate between Sandra and Torres instead of relying of what other people think and say.
We all need an opportunity to listen to both sides from questions that are given to them both, not heresay. Thank you.

  17. You're all singing the praises of the same Sandy Saraganian who called us (those of us opposed to One Carter) "racists," because the people who would buy those big houses would probably be Asian American- and that was in, what, 2005?

  18. Torres cares enough for PUSD to walk the walk. Ms Siraganian doesn't even care enough to send her own kids to PHS. What does that say about her commitment? She is just running to promote her real estate business and to follow up on the local Republican Party's goal of running someone in every election no matter how seasoned they are.

    1. Nobody in their right mind would send their kid to PHS if they had better options.

    2. If Torres "cares enough" why the hell hasn't he ever volunteered for anything in town. This guy is a TOTAL poser.

  19. Larry Torres hasn't volunteered for much in town but he has volunteered for a lot of work for schools. He is running for school board not city council. He does live here .
