Barry Gold Announces His Write-In Candidacy For Sierra Madre City Council

Mod: Many people have expressed their frustration at being unable to vote for an alternative to the two like-minded sitting City Councilmembers running for reelection this April. Nobody filed to run against them and they will be the only two names on the ballot. However, the option to run as a write-in candidate has always remained. Today Barry Gold announces that he has decided to exercise that option. There are some very important issues facing the community this election, and they deserve to be discussed. With Barry Gold's announcement the opportunity for Sierra Madre to have the discussion it clearly needs to have now exists. Here is Barry's announcement.

BARRY GOLD "WRITE-IN" CANDIDATE FOR SIERRA MADRE CITY COUNCIL Being frustrated with our city's approach to solving our two biggest problems, the budget deficit and police recruiting, and seeing how disturbed many residents are at the lack of choice in this April's election, I have decided to run as a "Write-In" candidate for city council.

The budget and police recruiting problems are inseparable.  The main reason we face such a large deficit is due to the escalating costs of running our own police department.  Small towns like Sierra Madre can no longer compete with larger cities for police personnel.  Especially since the larger cities are now facing recruiting problems themselves.

We should contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff as soon as possible, get more protection for a lot less money, and free up funds for other services and infrastructure improvements.

However, I believe that some city council members feel that everything should be done to save our police department knowing that it is a futile effort and will waste thousands of dollars.  I am running for the city council to stop this waste.

We must force ourselves to live within our means.  So I will vote no on Measure UUT.  If we do not have the money we cannot spend it.

I am not against a UUT Tax.  As a member of the UUT Revenue Committee I proposed a 9% UUT rate with a 6 year sunset back to 6%.   The committee recommended 12% and the city council approved 10% with no sunset.

By taking the time to write in Barry Gold on the ballot you will be telling the entire council that you want the sheriff, you want to save thousands of dollars each year, and get better police protection.

If you vote yes for Measure UUT and write in Barry Gold on the ballot you will be making it clear that you do not mind paying higher taxes for the city services you value, you just do not want your tax dollars wasted.

As a candidate I will NOT take any money from anyone.  Not one penny.  There will not be lawn signs or mailers.  And if elected I will not owe any favours to anybody except to those who wrote in my name on the ballot.  I will repay them by keeping my promise to do everything I can to the hire the Sheriff as soon as possible, make the necessary cuts to balance the rest of the budget, and then concentrate on our neglected infrastructure.

To qualify as a Write-In candidate, so the votes will be counted, I need to collect 30 signatures on the Nomination Application.  If anyone, who is a registered voter in Sierra Madre, would like to sign the Nomination Form please send me an e-mail with your contact information and I will call you to arrange to get your signature.

My e-mail address is: BARRYGOLD4CITYCOUNCIL@GMAIL.COM

Respectfully,

Barry Gold

    2. 5:51AM Not sure it's about getting elected. It's about giving people a choice. Maybe a way to show displeasure with the unopposed candidates? Great idea, really.

    5. still voting NO - I'm not paying more in taxes because we're paying taxes to pay for pension plans that are unheard of in the real world, so as long as Calpers or those type of ponzi type pensions plans are in place for SM, PUSD etc I'll continue to vote NO

  3. This is a good start now there is a need for one more write in candidate for the city council of Sierra Madre, California. If people want to support their write in candidate they can vote for him or her along with making there own support signs or pay for declaration's of support in local or regional newspapers print of electronic.

    1. I disagree with the premise that a Yes vote and a vote for Mr Gold is suggesting that we are okay with higher taxes or any form of tax when the reason driving the UUT is not the city infrastructure, but the pension obligations past, present and future

we'll always have City Managers and Councils with their hands out or in our pocket because they have to fund Calpers

If Mr Gold will publicly state that he will seek the support of other cities and file a lawsuit to withdraw from Calpers completely it might force Calpers to get in the real world - we're going to be hammered for years because of the pension plan, Elaine's already driving a Mercedes, we'll be paying for her new rides for the next 20 or 30 years and what does she do?

      sort of flip us off

    2. if Mr. Gold is elected, we hope (because we've been mislead before) that the Council will get serious and it'll be the first time since the Measure V days that the Council hasn't been dominated by those endorsed, supported and counseled by those that got the city into this mess in the first place

  4. I believe in miracles. But that said, the Valentines Day gift here is that Sierra Madre now gets to have a conversation and not just a coronation. Thank you Barry for standing up and saying what needs to be said.

    3. 9:26AM If you have watched or been to any CC meetings, you would know he would never take any endorsement by Buchanan, Walsh or Moran. You have his e-mail. Find out for yourself!

  6. Sierra Madre has a long history of gutsy individuals who stand up against great odds to do the right thing. Bravo Mr. Gold!

    1. too bad Mr. Tice can't run, I would have voted for him just NOT to vote for the Harabedian or Cappicoa. Gold - Tice might have finally righted the SoCal Edison trip we've been on since Buchanan graced us with his "love" for the city

still can't believe that Buchanan tried to sneak past us a condo build out of downtown that would ruined the city but benefited his employer, SoCal Edision

  7. Mr. Gold has my support. May his energy inspire more of us residents to look at the facts. Thank you Barry Gold for the sacrifices you are taking and will take, you must love this town a lot.

    1. don't say that, "love this town" cause that's what John Buchanan and Joe Mosca said the same....scary results

and then we had the new in town lawyer Noah Green who had to run for Council cause after 24 hours of living here, he also "loved" the city so much that "we" needed his input, despite him noahing nothing about the city.

Mr. Gold has to replace one of the two running, which one?

Harabedian cheated to win, Cappicoa is a Buchanan clone so he talks allot, thinks he's always right, knows more than us but he can be shut down.

      Not sure

    2. I think John Capoccia's rudeness has come back to haunt him.

  8. It only take's Barry to be elected to change the majority of the outcomes. Eliminate either one of the Johns & Sierra Madre has a fighting hope!
    Thank you Barry Gold

  9. The fact that Mr. Gold is running will bring out a lot more information. Information that never would have been heard before.

  10. Barry is a great choice. But without getting his name out there, how will anyone know he is running for council.

    1. Word of mouth works. Also, he can pass out flyers at Kersting Court. He can speak at the various clubs around town. If we oppose the two other candidates then we can help him.

  11. Barry is a very good guy. He's done a lot for all of us in the short time he's lived here, an escaped refugee from Arcadia.
Deserves the vote of everyone who values slow growth and fair taxes.
Write his name in Tattlers. Don't vote for the other two....they aren't worth it.

  12. You can't beat the PD, St.Ritas church, the Library, the whole Athens Co. and Sacramento where all the attorneys want to be. So you have to go after Cappicoa, the AT&T man.

  13. Barry that's a great idea. Anyone else want to sep up as a write in candiate?. We can possibly force hardbedian and capoca to St out

  14. I think one of the reasons this is going to work well is people had become resigned to not having a choice. Now there is and it is a pleasant surprise. It is big news.

  15. Sorry 9:34, your right, I forgot that. Instead, Mr. Gold must really appreciate living in Sierra Madre.

  16. If you feel strongly e-mail Mr. Gold and sign him up. It gives us hope and maybe some great fun! We all need this!

    2. People who read the Tattler are participants in city politics. I'm pretty sure that a write-in will have a small impact on the majority of voters, so it's frustrating that such a good person is not going to be well known.

      Delete
    3. Hmmm. So if they are participants in city politics, doesn't that mean they can convince people to vote their way? Why don't you give Noah Green a ring and see how that works.

    5. I agree. Barry Gold has taken on a lot of responsibility. We must as well.

  18. Barry would be a City Councilman whose decisions would be based on what is good for the community. That would be his only priority.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Barry will be like Ben Carson, well meaning, lots of good ideas, but not a chance, and will be lots of wasted effort. There is a place on the ballot to vote no on measure UUT if you are so inclined and the effort to get out there and campaign against it would be well worth it.

  21. Please remember to safe guard your write in candidate you need 2 other wise the singular 1 is helpless against the other 3 nasty city council members. Please find another writ in candidate ASAP.

  22. Who are you adding in to the three? If Barry wins he could work well with Goss (remember he voted against the W. Highland cheater) and the two women. A Barry win pumps off one of the two that sometimes did create a drag-their-feet threesome. No one knows how they will vote, consider the choices in front of them, etc. until they are elected and sitting down to make momentous decisions.

  23. Is this supposed to be funny?

  24. Barry, if you think a 9% UUT would have worked, why do you think a 6% UUT will work? "If you don't have it, you can't spend it", but it takes money to run a business, or a government. How do you propose (and I agree the sheriff will absorb some of the costs) but there are other aspects of the city that needs funding. 6% won't do it. So, where will the monies come from?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Fire the cops. Then 6% will work.

      Delete
    2. 6% will work if you do the math. LASD will give us 20% more patrols at 20% less cost. It will also mean no more CalPERS pension $$ due for current SMPD staff. But you already knew that. It just doesn't work with Platinum a Pensions.

  25. Write in Barry...don't give the other ones more votes.
This is a smart move by Barry...let's give him a lot of write in votes. Get his name out there for the next election in years. He'll be on the ballot there and WIN.
He needs the help of all loyal Tattlers
He deserves our vote, don't let Barry down....he's done a lot for Sierra Madre.Lets all make an effort to say thanks.
