Pasadena Star News: Was this Sierra Madre lesbian couple the target of a hate crime?

Photo: Terry Miller
Mod: Has the Alt-Right movement to make America great again for bigots now reared its ugly head in Sierra Madre? This from today's edition of the Pasadena Star News.

Was this Sierra Madre lesbian couple the target of a hate crime? (Pasadena Star News link): About a week ago, the Czubernat family made a few colorful signs to express their feelings after the presidential election. One sign simply read “Love,” another read “Our Family (Loves) ALL People” with a heart representing the word love, and the last read “We stand with the Oppressed.”

As a lesbian couple, parents Crystal and Candice Czubernat wanted to show their 2-year-old twins that they have a voice, and it can be one of love in the face of potential persecution. But on Monday, the family found one of their cars vandalized, with a tire slashed and eggs thrown at it, leaving them stunned.

“When we moved to Sierra Madre, we were looking for a safe place to be a gay family and raise our kids in a community environment,” Crystal Czubernat said. “We don’t know what to think about this in the wake of the election.”

Sierra Madre Police have not characterized the act of vandalism as a hate crime, but said as the investigation progresses that designation could change, said Det. Henry Amos. Still, the Czubernats say the attack was too specific to be a coincidence.

The family has lived in Sierra Madre for almost two years and had never faced any antagonism until the handmade posters went up, Crystal Czubernat said.

After hearing from the Czubernats on Monday night, Mayor Pro Tem Rachelle Arizmendi responded via email Tuesday morning to express sympathy and to say she was hopeful the vandalism was simply an unrelated prank.

“I would like to think that it was the act of ignorant adolescents thinking a prank would be entertaining — with no intent of violence or hate,” Arizmendi said. “Nevertheless, it is unacceptable. As a council member, I’m embarrassed that this would happen in our town and it is not representative of what I know of our residents.”

Planned Parenthood has received more than 50,000 donations in Mike Pence’s name (New York Daily News link): Planned Parenthood supporters are chipping in a pretty penny at the Vice President-elect’s ex-Pence.

The women’s health organization has received more than 50,000 individual donations in pro-life Indiana Gov. Mike Pence’s name since the election, a rep from the nonprofit confirmed to the Daily News on Tuesday.

The donations in protest of the Republican’s longtime crusade to defund Planned Parenthood and restrict women’s access to abortion make up about a quarter of those gifted since Election Day.

“We’ve seen an unprecedented outpouring of support, with more than 200,000 people donating in the week following the election — a quarter of whom pledged to be monthly supporters, recognizing the long-term work that is needed,” organization president Cecile Richards told The News in a statement. “Tens of thousands more are pledging to make sure access to health care is protected.”

A grassroots movement — informing online activists that they could have certificates of donation sent straight to Pence’s Indiana State House address — proliferated on social media last week, gaining traction from celebs like Amy Schumer and Amber Tamblyn.

President-elect Donald Trump, once pro-choice on abortion, has more recently vowed to appoint pro-life Supreme Court justices who might overturn Roe v. Wade. Pence, meanwhile, has been a longtime opponent of abortion rights — even signing a state measure in March requiring aborted or miscarried fetuses to be “interred or cremated.”

“We’ll see Roe vs. Wade consigned to the ash heap of history where it belongs,” Pence said in July, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Mod: Apparently abortion is not the only issue Donald Trump has flipped on.

Donald Trump Drops Threat of New Hillary Clinton Investigation (New York Times link): President-elect Donald J. Trump said on Tuesday that he had no intention of pressing for an investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server or the financial operations of her family’s foundation, dropping the “lock her up” pledge that became a rallying cry for his campaign for the White House.

Mr. Trump, who branded his rival “Crooked Hillary” and said she would go to jail if he were president, said in an interview with reporters and editors at The New York Times that he was no longer interested in pursuing Mrs. Clinton, in part because he wanted to heal the wounds of a divisive campaign.

“I don’t want to hurt the Clintons, I really don’t,” Mr. Trump said during the interview. “She went through a lot and suffered greatly in many different ways, and I am not looking to hurt them at all. The campaign was vicious.”

His reversal on prosecuting Mrs. Clinton was particularly striking given the outsize role the issue played during the presidential campaign, in which her use of a private email server as secretary of state became a prominent theme, and one she has blamed for her loss to Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump said he wanted to “move forward” from the subject. Without elaborating, he said that “we’ll have people that do things,” perhaps a reference to the F.B.I. or Republicans who might continue to press for prosecutions in the email or foundation cases. But the president-elect made clear that he would not seek to pursue an investigation himself nor make it a priority after he assumes office.

The decision angered some of his most fervent supporters, who immediately criticized his seeming change of heart.

Broken Promise,” blared the headline on Breitbart News, a conservative news site that has strongly backed Mr. Trump.

Mod: Poor Trumpies. They're not going to get their Soviet-style political show trial after all. And apparently they are livid with rage.

Breitbart is really mad at Donald Trump for his “broken promise” to pursue criminal charges against Hillary Clinton (Salon link): The chants of “Lock her up” were a familiar refrain at Donald Trump’s campaign rallies, as his right-wing demanded to see criminal charges against former secretary of state Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email server.

But now that Trump’s defeated his opponent and is set to take the White House, in an apparent shock even to himself, he is already signaling that he fully intends to break that campaign pledge.

This is not going over well with the base.

Despite its former executive chairman, Steve Bannon, serving as CEO of Trump’s campaign and recently being named as a senior advisor in his White House, Breitbart finally broke away from its unwavering support to slam Trump’s sudden change of heart.

And it’s not just Breitbart that’s mad at Trump. Judicial Watch, the conservative watchdog agency that sued to get more of Clinton’s State Department emails released, was swift to react to Team Trump’s shift. Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton urged Trump on Tuesday to “commit his administration” to investigating Clinton, saying a refusal to do so “would be a betrayal of his promise to the American people to ‘drain the swamp’ of out-of-control corruption in Washington, DC.”

President-elect Trump should focus on healing the broken justice system, affirm the rule of law and appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the Clinton scandals,” the statement read.

Mod: These people need to realize that Donald Trump has far more important things to do. Like kiss up to the very same Wall Street oligarchy he ran against. Which, as you might have noticed, is doing quite well lately. Funny how things can change. Rather than "draining the swamp," it is becoming increasingly clear that the incoming Trump administration actually is the swamp.

  1. I don't see how the crime against the Czubernat's could be labeled a hate crime. Any vandalism is wrong. Yes, even that does by th recent protestors against Trump. But it seems to me it's the message that may not be liked. Not the couple. As for Trump backtracking on prosecuting Hillary. I can only imagine what that would do to the already unsettled country! If there's a crime let the proper government agencies handle it. And yes, the stock market is up but didn't Wall Street back Hillary? So what really is going on? I don't like the guy but I'm willing to have wait and see attitude rather then react speculation and constant badgering.

    2. Don't turn your house into a venue for making political statements then nobody has to worry about the motive for what right now should only be classified as mere vandalism. Don't speculate and tarnish the whole city by calling it a hate crime. That's ridiculous.

    4. Hey 7:20 - I've got a Preserve Sierra Madre sign in my yard. Should I take it down just in case I offend the McMansion crowd? Of course, it's a hate crime. Ironically, I think some of the Trumpets voted for The Orange One because they are so tired of political correctness. Let me repeat...of course this was a hate crime. Probably some out of towners piercing the Michillinda Curtain.

Of course it was Trumps fault, just like it was MaryAnn Macgillivray's fault there was hysteria over someone's perception that she was anti gay. Quit reading into someone's stupid act. 4. Two points.

First, this town isn't so nice. It's filled with angry old hippies who don't like outsiders, cyclists and change.

Second, it's notable that this terrible egg crime against a sign took place after the Sheriff left town and the bozos at SMPD took over night patrols. Time to bring back the sheriff's night patrol.

PS: when I got egged three years ago the city didn't come and clean it up even though I am an oppressed minority, glad to know that the next time a teen lobs an egg bomb I can call the city for clean up. Now that's a full service city.

Ps2: is that the same officer Amos who blasted the sleeping murano dude?

If you want real hate crimes ponder why Trump supporters were hesitant to put a sign in their yard or a bumper sticker on their car. We also noticed an uptick in fake hate crimes. I suppose the Tattler now wants everyone in Sierra Madre to undergoe sensitivity training. If you want a real hate crime take a look at the video of that Trump supporter being pummeled by a group of thugs only because they figured since he was a white guy he must have been a Trump supporter.

  13. I grew up in a bad neighborhood Este de Los Angeles, lacking the suburban white privilege of the good therapist.

I learned early on that it was best not to advertise my awesomeness, lest one of the neighborhood vatos feeling provoked by my awesomeness punch me.

I am long past that, but the lesson sticks. So when the kids asked why the family short lacked a sticker for our beloved presidential candidate I explained that it was because I didn't want the car to get keyed by a crazy supporter of the other candidate.

Maybe morally grandstanding after the election battle is done isn't such a good idea. Because even in Sierra Madre bad people exist.

  14. I am broken hearted for the lesbian couple. Sierra Madre has a long history of battered and bigotry. I am not surprised. When a black physician tried to buy a house on our street in the 60's, some neighbors started a petition to keep him out of the neighborhood. Needless to say, he decided not to buy. One of my friends was getting married in the early 70' and I was invited to the shower. My parents were invited to the wedding but I was not. They were afraid I would show up with my black husband. Since the election, some of these same friends have been calling me racist, anti American and stupid, all because I am a Democrat. I never once even made a political comment on Facebook, but they continue the rants, even today. Pence is in favor of "gay therapy" where you can change your sexual preference if only you wanted. Did the Sierra Madre couple choose to be discriminated against? No, Sierra Madre is full of bigots of all kinds and Trump has given them the go ahead to act.

I grew up in Sierra Madre in the 60's. There was a "white line"; but my friends to the West of town had a "black line". The Democratic thing to do was, forced bussing to schools. Experimenting with kids because the adults had "issues". Damn Hippies.
Your family had odd neighbors. My family had a sticker that read"***Good Neighbors come in all Colors, placed in our front window. Our family parties usually ended with a Conga line in the street; as we are a family with relatives of free to choose or the older generation, decline to state. We are a mix of colors, religions, musicians.
