The Henry A. Darling House Is Back On The Planning Commission Docket For Thursday

Mod: Although the author of the Agenda Report for this item does struggle mightily to not appear to make any conclusions of his own, it does appear that the historical significance of the inappropriately demolished Henry A. Darling home has in fact now been established. All it will take is for the Planning Commission to officially recognize this as fact. Here is some of that report (link).

Mod: The rest of this agenda report can be accessed through the link provided above. It would appear that the applicants can now begin looking forward to a difficult evening on December 1st.

  1. Planning Commission, please don't give them a pass.

  2. The report says, had potential for local designation. The prior owners of the house had never applied or chose not to submit an application to the States Historical Registry. The new owners have begun restoration of the house, using safer and newer materials. The point of contention was 3/4's of the roof being removed ahead of Schedule (simplified directions).
Now the presented information may be added to the archives at the Library and the restoration build should continue.

    1. Positively Orwellian.

    2. The prior owners never quite got to the States Historical Registry stage. Then again, they didn't have the temerity to tear the place down without the City's blessings, either.

    3. You mean, 6:41, because they didn't finish the job? They did so much damage that there really isn't any other choice.

    4. A city that does not enforce its laws and codes isn't really a city. It is an open invitation to corruption. They need to throw the book at this loser.

    5. 7:28, that's what bothers me the most; the owners have forced the city to accept their actions.

    6. If city hall caves in on this one then it is completely useless and they might as well just close the place.

    3. 7:21 there's a whole film about Trump bullying his way into that area of Scotland, and how much the local people hated what he was doing and fought him - except the ones who took his checks.

    7. Trump in Scotland: “If America wants to know what is coming, it should study what happened here. It’s predictive,” said Martin Ford, a local government representative. “I have just seen him do in America, on a grander scale, precisely what he did here. He suckered the people and he suckered the politicians until he got what he wanted, and then he went back on pretty much everything he promised.”

    8. 7:12 is right- we wouldn't want anyone intentionally floating fake news out there such as Obama not being born in the US, or that climate change is a Chinese hoax. Whoever would intentionally do that should be locked up

  5. If I understand the codes correctly, the worst punishment that can be given is to charge the owner $2,000 and stop work for 2 years.
That owner won't care about $2,000, and I doubt the commission wants to see that wreck for 2 years.

  10. Wealthy local business owner with cosy long term 'relationships' with all levels in the City Management tries to circumvent the law . He is given a few nods and winks from pro-development buddies(Vincent?) from the City. The reasoning is similar to that used previously - even if they punish you ,it is just a slap on the wrist. Come on - $2000 is what he pilfers from the tips at The Only Place in Town in a week.
The problem is corrupt and inept City Management at all levels. City employees are hired and retained based on politics not performance.Until that changes to a merit based system, the corruption will continue.
This is a City that can not organize water supply. Most African villages can do that.Sierra Madre can not.

  11. The inside restoration of any house is in the "eye of the beholder" or owner. Hopefully if any of the doorknobs, switchplates, hardware were from that time period, they were kept for future use in the home.

  15. The Hillary Lions Lie with the Trumpian LambsNovember 28, 2016 at 10:35 AM

I completely agree with the boycott of the Oldest Place in Town and its crummy food. I literally cry every time I see some poor senior walk into that place when there is great, healthy food right next door.

You really need to watch the video of this guy in action. He argues that he didn't know that a permit allowing him to remove roofing materials (shingles) also allowed him to completely eviscerate this poor old house and leave it in its current bag of wood state. The best part is when he notes that he has not even removed material at the back of the house that he was also authorized to remove. In other words, there is more demo to come.

Of course, the house is gone and he is going to get away with this. We can only hope to hit him in the pocket where it will hurt.

  20. I decided to blackball the Only Place in Town some time ago. I was with an important client, and we were both hungry and the OPT was the easiest place to get a quick bite. When we were finished eating, the waitress presents the check, and I give her my credit card. She comes back, and proceeds to tell me that the card was declined right in front of my client. I am mortified, and tell her that she must have made a mistake. I ask her to get a manager, and she says that it is declined again. So...I call my bank immediately to see what is going on, and in the meantime pay cash to the restaurant. Lo and behold, the bank researches it, and both charges had really gone through. No apology was made, I was very embarrassed with my client. I will never dine there again.

  24. The PC needs to have an ordinance to protect the inside of a potentially historic house. Did the new owners sell the material they gutted from the inside or did they keep it or just throw it away. If they sold it, they should have to buy it back. The owner had to know what he was about and should be penalized to the full extent of the law. The realtor, Rose as well as the other realtor should have charges brought against them and be made to answer for their actions. Did they tell the new owner? Certainly there must be a realtors board that takes complaints. Lastly, the law has teeth or it doesn't. There is no problem with the PC, all but one, and we know who that is, is against this man. The CC needs to back them! I feel no pity for the owner. His restaurant needs to be boycotted.
