Should Sierra Madre's City Council Follow the Lead of the City of Richmond?

Fired by a City Council?
Mod: Realistically this won't have too much of an effect in Washington DC, but apparently these council members just wanted to make a statement. Done in hopes that others will follow their lead. After all, they were the first to do this, right? So will we see this on a Sierra Madre City Council meeting agenda anytime soon? Somebody should ask. You never know.

California City's Council Votes To Impeach Donald Trump (6abc.com link): The first 100 days of the Trump administration aren't even over yet, but the president is already facing calls for impeachment ... not from Congress, but a city council in CaliforniaRichmond City Council says it has become the first city in the country to go on record in support of impeachment hearings for President Trump.

The council acknowledged how unusual it was to call for the president's impeachment. He's been in office for only a month, but the vote was unanimous. "Unfortunately with this president it's oddly appropriate," said Richmond City Councilmember Jael Myrick.

Councilmember Gayle McLaughlin spearheaded the resolution, which calls on Congress to investigate the president's business holdings, something his critics believe are grounds for impeachment. "This is our voice," she said. "This is our country. We have a right to speak up."

Even in this progressive city, there was one vocal Trump supporter who was eventually thrown out for swearing at the council.

"Actually you don't have a voice because the GOP controls Congress and you people are stupid enough to think Congress will impeach Trump," said Richmond resident Mark Wassberg.

Supporters of the resolution, however, remain undeterred.

"A lot of politicians aren't willing to go on the record to do this because it can go against them," said Richmond resident Ellen Faden. "But as grass roots, as Bernie said, we have to start from the grass roots."

By passing this resolution, the Richmond City Council is now hoping it'll inspire other cities to do the same.

Mod: This next story is troubling for me because I like coyotes. They're kind of like dogs, but a whole lot smarter and certainly more independent.

Arcadia OKs $15,000 in funding for coyote-culling plan (KPCC link): The city of Arcadia voted to approve $15,000 in taxpayer money to trap and kill coyotes in the city at Tuesday night's city council meeting. The vote was 4-1, with Mayor Tom Beck the only dissenting vote.

The council first voted unanimously for the plan itself earlier in February, as residents asked for the action after recounting stories of pets being attacked or stalked by coyotes. However, the move didn't sit well with animal advocates.

Project Coyote was at the council meeting to persuade city officials to adopt a co-existence plan.

Randi Feilich of Project Coyote said coexistence requires public education.

"Don't leave pet bowls outside ... take out the trash the morning that it's supposed to come, seal off your trash containers," she told KPCC before the meeting. "Keep fallen fruit off the ground, because coyotes like fruit."

The city of Los Angeles and the city of Calabasas currently have coyote coexistence plans in place.

Mod: My take? Keep the coyotes. After all, they were here first.

  1. Progressives don't allow freedom of speech, sounds very much like the mind think of pre WWII Germany.
The one voice in the wilderness, Mr. Wassberg of Richmond; was thrown out. For swearing!
Apparently, the Nazi Council does follow Governmental guidelines on how to conduct a meeting.
I could bet that not much gets done in the City of Richmond; they may be similar to Sierra Madre; they enjoy hearing themselves talk.

  2. Trump is sinking. Less than five weeks into his presidency, he has an approval rating of 38 percent and a disapproval rating of 55 percent. His approval is 4 points lower than just two weeks ago, and his disapproval rating has climbed steadily from 44 percent days after he took office to 51 percent on Feb. 7 and 55 percent Wednesday.

“President Donald Trump’s popularity is sinking like a rock,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac poll. “He gets slammed on honesty, empathy, level-headedness and the ability to unite. And two of his strong points, leadership and intelligence, are sinking to new lows. This is a terrible survey one month in.”

The majority of Americans have common sense, even if 38 percent of them are living in Trumpland.

    1. Sounds as if you believe polls, maybe that is why your presidential candidate did so well in the polls but did not garner enough electoral college states to win the election. I bet the polls let you down, but you still believe them, great thinking... I guess?

    7. Actually I am enjoying the polls. Trump's numbers are at a historic low for a president that has only been in office for one month. What's so bad about that?

    8. Trump lost by 3 million votes because he lost big in Los Angeles and New York City. That is the only reason he lost the popular vote and he didn't even campaign there. If he campaigned there it's hard to know what would have happened. California is a one party state. I don't think that 3 million new immigrants most of whom are on the dole and dependent on government largesse should decide the election for the other 48 states. Thank god for the Electoral College.

“Donald Trump has to perform now,” Will said. “The next thing he has to do is submit a budget. When the budget comes up calling for a trillion dollars in infrastructure spending, a tax cut that will lose by bipartisan assessment $5.8 trillion over a decade plus an increased military spending, plus protectionism, which means government deciding what Americans can consume at what prices and what quantities — what’s called economic planning and crony capitalism and all the rest – when that budget comes out, people are either going to rediscover their conservative convictions, or there’s going to be a banquet, a feast of people eating words they’ve spoken for 30 years.”

  6. Coyotes in Arcadia: a few years back the city council budgeted $35,000.00 to hire a trapper. He trapped 18 coyote during the period of time he was paid for...some cost per coyote. Then the city had an outreach program at the Arboretum. 200 citizens showed up plus the experts and the city staff/council. Many thought the coyotes were humanely "euthanized" and were shocked to learn they are gassed (no veterinarian nicely uses a needle to put them "to sleep.") The expected outcome was that 18 coyote would step in to take the place of those killed and until and unless the humans changed their behavior nothing would improve:
Bird seed falling to the ground, attracts rodents=food.
    Fallen fruit=food.
    Small pets outside unattended=food.
Cat and dog kibble left out=food.
Pet feces gives off the smell of the animals' last meal, animal in the area=food.

  9. Boehner: Republicans won't repeal and replace Obamacare

Former House Speaker John Boehner predicted on Thursday that a full repeal and replace of Obamacare is “not going to happen.”

Boehner, who retired in 2015 amid unrest among conservatives, said at an Orlando healthcare conference that the idea that a repeal-and-replace plan would blitz through Congress was just “happy talk.”

Instead, he said changes to former President Barack Obama’s signature legislative achievement would likely be relatively modest.

“(Congressional Republicans are) going to fix Obamacare – I shouldn’t call it repeal-and-replace, because it’s not going to happen,” he said.

  10. I seems that those opposed to Obama care like the Affordable Care Act. Hum? As Obama said: 'I don't care what they call it, as long as it bring health care to all Americans' (I paraphrase). Come on... how is it that we want to make American Great (forget the Again) but can't see past the end of our own noses that we are way down the list in life expectancy, infant mortality, and other indices for health care. If everybody has health care everybody is healthier. Even if you don't care about the other guys health, but only your own, if he/she is healthier then you will be too.

  11. Now I know why the trump troll polarize every argument such that if one is against Trump they must be 'leftist', and can't be anything else:

Breitbart News sent out a sponsored email on Thursday that told its readers that violent leftists are coming to attack their way of life — and then urged them to buy a “survival food supply” as part of their “preparedness plan.”

“After 8 years of trying to destroy this country from within government, the Left is now desperately working to tear it down from the radical fringe,” the email reads. “They’re willing to use violence. They’re willing to destroy property. They’re willing to attack not just politicians, but everyday citizens – even in their homes.”

  22. Arcadia unwittingly harbors coyote populations where there are houses that are unoccupied. I saw a number in the area of 600 houses that were sitting idle, waiting for the builder/speculator to get the mansion project underway. That would not account for the number of mega homes that have been built and are sittling empty. Lots of habitat for coyote. It doesn't have to be in the foothills or along the settling basin. Basically people do not know where they live and don't appreciate the native animal populations in their back yards. A few coyotes will be sacraficed to the latest Arcadia reaction and nothing will improve.
