Harbicht and Chandler's Endorsement Deficit Disorder

Mod: So the Bob Harbicht and Roger Chandler campaigns held a hastily called press conference in Arcadia last Tuesday afternoon, which drew about 25 people. To the left here is how the Arcadia Weekly (link) described the event in this week's edition.

Which I guess is pretty good. Both Harbicht and Chandler seemed to be pleased that they had actually convinced a real actual former Mayor to stand up and say that yes, he would vote for these two candidates for City Council. This even though under the law Dr. Chang can personally only vote for one of these candidates at a time without causing himself some possible legal jeopardy. After all, even former Mayors are subjected to the ages old "one man, one vote" rule.

And that is if either live in his neighborhood. Hopefully there isn't any confusion here on this issue. I know how difficult this districting process has been for some.

Out of curiosity I looked around a little to see how the other City Council candidates were doing with their endorsements by former Arcadia mayors. Joyce Platt, who along with Jolly Wu is opposing Roger Chandler in his bid for an umpteenth term in office, seems to be doing particularly well in this category.

This from Joyce's campaign Facebook page (link).

So it would appear that as far as the former Mayor of Arcadia vote is going, Joyce Platt would be leading Roger Chandler by a pretty hefty three to one clip.

Tom Beck (link), who is being challenged by perennial City Council candidate Bob Harbicht, has the endorsement of the same former Mayors as Joyce Platt, plus one. So we're looking at yet another landslide in former Mayor votes.

Jolly Wu is endorsed by former Mayor Gail Marshall. Gail Marshall has been out going from door to door campaigning for Jolly.

Additional news on this important issue as soon as it becomes available.

Roger Chandler takes the "Lawn Signs Confiscated by the City" lead

The lawn sign king and admirers.

While Roger Chandler might be losing badly in the former Mayor endorsement category, he is by far the leader in another area that many people are following closely this election. That being the removal by the city of illegally placed campaign lawn signs race.

Earlier this week a concerned resident sent the following note to Arcadia's City ManagerDominic Lazzaretto. This was accompanied by photos proving that misdeeds had indeed been committed.

Dear Dominic -  Good morning. Lisa Mussenden, Arcadia election official, sent every candidate for City Council the guidelines for yard signs. She did this twice and she asked ALL CANDIDATES to comply with Arcadia zoning code article IX and with Use of Land, chapter 1, table 3-14 and 3-15. Please inform me if Ms. Mussenden is incorrect and that only some candidates need to comply, but not others.

Attached are photos of several instances of campaign signs violating city code and Use of Land. The photos were taken on March 6th, 2018, almost one month after Gail Marshall spoke at city council about the misplacement of campaign yard signs throughout the city.

Thus alerted, City Manager Lazzeretto quickly replied with this stunning information.

This morning, our code enforcement staff removed 20 Chandler signs, 4 Harbicht signs, and 1 Platt sign from the general area you had mentioned over the past few days. It should include the ones noted in the photos you sent earlier today. Please let our code enforcement staff (or Lisa) know about any other areas of concern on this matter.

We are also sending out further clarification to all candidates on what the sign regulations are related to election signs. It should be very similar to what I sent you yesterday. All candidates must comply with the regulations equally. - Dominic

The Tattler would like to be the first to congratulate Roger Chandler on his stunning performance in the "Lawn Signs Removed by the City" category. As a former City Council candidate myself (albeit it in Sierra Madre, not Arcadia), I can appreciate the backbreaking effort this must have taken.

  1. Sheng Chang was not a good councilman. He was one term and done. He also on camera just within the last year told the public to NOT vote for Kovacic and Chandler. So, now he’s endorsing Chandler. What a fool. Make up your mind.

    1. The question is what is the quid pro quo made between Sheng Chang and Chandler to get Chang's endorsement... Why the former City Council John Wuo has not endorsed Chandler... Aren't they buddies...

  2. Jolly Wu is endorsed by former Mayor Gail Marshall. Gail Marshall even went door to door knocking for Jolly Wu. On www.votejollywu.com you be able to read Gail Marshall's testimonial letter and Jolly Wu's running platform and what she had accomplished in the last 18 years living in Arcadia. That is including getting over 1.03 millions in 2003 to make Arboretum more accessible for people with physical hardship. By visiting each candidate's website side will get you a right choice for the next 4 years for this great community that you live in.

    1. Here is something refreshing: From Jolly Wu's website, she is the only City Council candidate for District 5 that is self-funded and, she does not accept donations from special interest groups or individuals. Looks like Jolly Wu is the only candidate that put money where her mouth is.

  6. 5:52, please explain what’s so great about Arcadia? Have you put kids thru Arcadia schools ? Unfortunately, the district takes all the credit for success, after they take more money from us then start crazy Alt School programs in secret. The truth is the schools and teachers are average but what really drives the test scores is the FACT that most residents are educated themselves which leads to higher achieving students. Read up on some internet reviews of the high school teachers.
Or maybe you like the Arcadia housing situation? You know, how a 3 bedroom 1950s home sells for $1.2M. Are your kids going to buy in this so-called ‘great community’? Maybe so, if you’ve managed to bring in lots of laundered cash from foreign sources.

    1. 6:57, I think you are not giving enough credit to the parents. The Asian community is well known as being deeply committed to education, and for good or ill those parents see to it that their children show up and participate in education.

    2. 6:57, I did give credit to the parents, look at my post again. The parents are out of control, forcing these kids to after school study places. Oh, by the way— I recently spoke with an Arcadia HS vice principal regarding these study paces. He referred to them as “cheating academies”. He said when your kid goes to one, they pull out several semesters worth of class tests, somehow obtained. Isn’t that just great ? It’s called cheating. He said he previously worked at one. I was blown away hearing this story. But, if you want to think the parents value education that’s your choice. Apparently some value cheating as well. Pretty sad.

    3. Let's cut to the chase: Is called preparation and practice, not cheating. Your goal is trying get higher test score through preparation and practice.

    4. Here are some observations regarding the so called "cheating academies comment by the Arcadia HS vice principal: Is it cheating when the US Olympians hire the best coaches in the world to train them in Olympic game competitions? Is it cheating when athletes sacrifice countless hours in training exercises and regimens to compete in the Olympic Games?

  14. got an email from the "California Tax Limitation Committee" which is a tea party organization in Pasadena telling people to vote No on Measure D. The email appears to be crafted by some person in Monrovia. The email has the City of Sierra Madre seal on it (which is illegal). I will be reporting these people to the DA today for emailing a fraudulent political communication.

  15. 6:57 Unfortunately, city and school are separate entities. The only candidate who are self funded is Jolly Wu. She just like to concentrate on serving the Arcadia residents after she got elected without any obligation to any special interest group or individuals. The only way to make a community great is everyone has to put his or her effort in it. I hope that everyone reading this will start to act on our daily life. Making a great community is in everyone's hands.

Earl Richey (who is reportedly sick and dying) and David McMonigle should be tarred and feathered for wasting our time with this Measure and trying to burn down city government finances with the foolish belief that something great will rise from the ashes they are trying to create...presumably like the Reichstag Fire.

  28. The bottom line to the Arcadia District 5 voters:
Vote for Roger Chandler if Arcadians want to stick to the status quo of increasing crime rates in your neighborhood, raising sales tax in Arcadia to pay for $130 million in unfunded pension debt, and continuing making bad decisions.
Or if voters want real change in Arcadia, then vote for Jolly Wu for Arcadia City Council if Arcadians want accountability and responsible stewardship.
