Arcadia Weekly Chief Terry Miller Threatens 'Voice of Arcadia' with Legal Action Over Tom Beck Photo Theft

First I need to share something with you. I've been none too happy with the Arcadia Weekly these last two weeks. It wasn't all that long ago that Beacon Media asked me to join their papers because they wanted to "shake things up" and add a little political red meat to their otherwise bland news fare. And, as you know, it worked. More than they'd ever hoped, apparently.

But when the heat got turned up on them a little, Arcadia Weekly folded up like a cheap suitcase, and threw me deep under the bus. However, I've been thrown under buses before. Plenty of times. In these stupid times truth telling often gets you into trouble. Which is actually fun. And now I get to share this wackiness with you. It got really wild yesterday at Voice of Arcadia, which is good news for The Tattler. The issue? The illegal (and in my opinion slanderous) use of a Tom Beck photo that is property of the Arcadia Weekly. Here is how it rolled out.

(Oh, and I will not be posting that Tom Beck picture here for a very obvious reason.)

Did you catch that bit from the anonymous Voice of Arcadia clown about Terry "being perceived as being protective and biased?" My guess is that was a threat. Meaning certain gentlemen of distinction will call Terry's anxious boss again about his daring to tell the truth. Advertising apparently being more important than real news in that office these days.

One more thing. As of midnight last night the Tom Beck picture, property of Beacon Media and Terry Miller, had not been removed by Voice of Arcadia.

They had been warned.

    7. Here is one from VOA, what do you think about it?

"If Mr. Miller owned the Arcadia Weekly newspaper, the story might be different. But Arcadia Weekly is financially supported by Arcadia city government, which tax payers paid for its publication. We, the people, certainly have the rights to use it as long as we are not impersonating official government documents, a very bad example is in the other post, Committee to Oppose Chandler Arcadia City Council 2018, this organization did impersonating Arcadia City official letter, which is illegal. I wonder why Arcadia Weekly didn't report any real fraudulent actions during this election except fake news? People are tired of fake news. Mr. Miller , can you start investigate what was going on in those copyright infringement of city logo and symbols besides impersonation of official documents? That is what we really need in the news. I wish you could do something at least right for once. I will appreciate it." End of quote.

Ideas? Teery is impossible to win any law suit, right?

    1. from VOA about trees cut,

"I support any body who is not racist, no matter what races they are. I don't like Tom created rumors as his campaign slogan. Most of Tom's supporters had the exactly same trained words, "I hate Bob, Bob bulldozer, Bob cut trees, Bob a liar." Come on, are you an adult, are you matured to understand some basics between talking facts and gossiping rumors? Tom built much bigger houses than other council members did, Tom/April cut 11 most beautiful trees in Santa Anita Center Median north to foothill blvd early this year, the second set of cutting of our beautiful trees. It made me wonder when the third set of trees will be cut if there is a plan like that? Will these trees have to pretend to be sick first by not watering them for two years? By the way, if I remember correctly, Santa Anita Center Median was one of 189 historic preservation structures, where were our historians, where are our protection procedures, do we have double standards? I was very sad no body from saving Arcadia or saving the highland groups there to protest it. These groups people didnot seem care about Arcadia or highland at all. What a shameful way to create names that doesn't mean it. Now it is the season to see those used to be purple bluish flowers, we lost the beauty and we lost true spirit, only fake news created two years ago by saving Arcadia still exists.Dear council members, please stop generating more rumors, you can cheat us for a while, but not for a long time."

Can anyone share information or experience about those trees cut in Santa Anita Center Median this year?

    2. from VOA,Veronica Tomas

      "Wow.. such hypocrites.

The only thing they want to "save" and "preserve" is their race and preventing Asians from continuing to move into Arcadia. Too late for them. Asians are the majority now, and the city is more beautiful and friendly than its ever been! ❤️"

  23. This is Mark Hong.

I have 0 clients. I am NOT a lawyer. I WAS but not anymore. I was at an international law firm for several years and hated it. I thought a small solo practice would be better but I hated it. So now I'm developing a comic book series that teaches CA cannabis law to business owners and consumers, and also a cartoon to help people defend themselves against debt buyer lawsuits. Those are my missions. You can see some of my early work (i.e., my learning curve) at YouTube.com/EverybodysLaw.

In other words, I am not hiding behind anonymity.

First, I am not part of a mansionization crowd and I'm definitely NOT affiliated with any Asian community activist. I've taken no money from anyone. In fact, I was so upset with Dishonest Tom for spreading rumors that I approached Asian community activists, intending to join them. However, I found many of their views to be too extreme. I'm a free agent.

Yes, I have an ax to grind: I believe the historic preservation ordinance the city is trying to pass is a con job. As you will see when I publish the emails - which, honestly, I was hoping to avoid but I see now that I cannot - my initial issue with Dishonest Tom Beck was based on his inability to answer my questions about the ordinance.

To AnonymousMay 17, 2018 at 10:32 AM: yes, I do not like Arcadia because from the day I moved in in 2010 it was clear that a certain segment of the city's population didn't like the fact that Arcadia has better name recognition in Shanghai than it does in Sherman Oaks, and that the city has become an Asian city, not even an Asian-American city.

But I am not an angry man. In fact, you can find me with my family delivering lunch to the fire department on Baldwin, or with my girls singing for the police officers and firemen who had to work on Christmas morning, or delivering In-and-Out to the officers who help us cross Huntington before the Concerts in the Park, which we haven't missed in 4 years, my 2 very angry little girls are the ones dancing (HAVE I MADE THEM A TARGET? I AM HOPING NOT BUT IF SO WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT YOUR READERS?)

I would love this city and would continue trying to make it feel more like home if people like Dishonest Tom were punished for campaigning on divisive, anti-Asian stereotypes. QUESTION: I will publish the emails before next week's council meeting - IF they convince you that I'm telling the truth AND that his comments were not taken out of context, THEN WILL YOU JOIN ME IN DEMANDING HIS RESIGNATION?

Regarding Sho Tay. I took his friend request as a sign of good faith, like the opposite of consciousness of guilt. I will still report him in a heartbeat if there is a video of him encouraging non-citizens to register to vote. In a heartbeat. You guys know Councilwoman April Verlato, you can ask her how hard I pressed on issues; I assure you I pressed Councilman Sho Tay just as hard and he friend requested me anyway.

In fact, after meeting with Sho Tay and April Verlato, I believe they could unify the city if they would each ignore their most extreme and annoying supporters. Dishonest Tom can't be part of any solution because he is the problem.

Re: copyright. I don't know the law. IP lawyer friends have advised that I am safe. Again, I was going to replace the image until the photographer attacked me on Facebook. Now I will wait for and evaluate his lawyer's letter.

He has also admitted twice in city council meetings (listen to the video) that he misused his campaign funds to support two other candidates (an FPPC violation) and he failed to fill out Form 700 regarding ownership of a gun range (also a violation). Last time he ran (not appointed) he was fined for collecting ballots and his Wechat groups have been filled with misinformation and remarks about "white" folks. He is beholden to outside interests who fund his campaigns. Look at his voting record. Sho claims he can be a peacemaker. How? Morally he refused to take a stand when the only Asian candidate was called a banana in the Chinese World Journal. Instead, at the last 2 council meetings, he laughed and made a joke out of being a banana. Peacemaker? Hardly. In addition Jolly Wu was derided for her disability. I guess Sho Tay is unaware that a 3 time President of the US -Roosevelt-served from a wheelchair. How about Stephen Hawkings? I am beginning to agree with Mark Hong.
