Arcadia: The City Council Backs Away From Its Tuesday Evening Meeting In Hell

Mod: Last evening an email from Tom Beck went out to his mailing list, and a fair sized number of the people on that list then forwarded it to me. It is quite a fascinating document, and I am pleased to share it with you. It is also a good example of realpolitik, I'll explain that in a minute. I do look forward to Sho Tay's apology. At the meeting on June 1, open to the public, Amundson and Beck read it and approved. We'll see if the version he reads at the June 5 Council meeting is the same one. Here is Tom Beck's carefully nuanced email to his peeps.

Subject: Moving Arcadia forward
Dear Friends: As you know, this last election was very divisive and negative. It has left our residents saying they have never seen anything like this in Arcadia, and it has left a lot of hard feelings. The campaign had numerous ‘hit pieces’ and I was the recipient of many. I ran a completely clean campaign and it caused me a lot of distress to see what those that did not want me to be re-elected said about me.

There were bold objective lies told. The City Council is going to be discussing what can be done so this does not become the ‘new normal’.

I hold those on the City Council to a higher standard during the campaign than outside influences that most often are anonymous. I was particularly bothered by campaign mailers by Sho Tay that were misleading, portrayed Arcadia as a dangerous place, and contained a very important untrue statement. It was for this reason that I did not vote for him to be Mayor on April 24.

It had nothing to do with his race, yet that is the way his supporters viewed it. Those that know me know that I have worked for decades in the inner city of LA with people of color and an absolutely not a racist. I am in the inner city volunteering almost on a weekly basis.

Sho’s supporters then waged a very nasty social media campaign against me. One of them filed a frivolous FPPC complaint against me (and April Verlato) so it could be said that not only Sho had complaints against him but also April and Tom. The complaints will soon be dismissed. All of this negative activity needs to end.

On June 1 the City Council had a ‘team building’ session. We shared our frustrations and it was a very productive meeting. We agreed to a new path forward. Sho advised me that he will read a written apology for what he said in the the most offending mailer, and will also apologize for an untrue statement he made in one of our open meetings about that mailer.

That is good enough for me. We all make mistakes. When we make mistakes and apologize for them and promise to not make the mistakes in the future we should be forgiven. I believe in redemption.

This coming Tuesday we will select our new Mayor. I am asking my friends/supporters not to say anything negative about Sho or offer an opinion on who should be Mayor. Many opinions have already been shared. It won’t help to have any more negativity. We as a city need to move forward, and hopefully in harmony. - Tom Beck

Mod: I am going to go out on a short limb with a saw and assume that this missive was written so that those on Tom's email list will not be too stunned when the City Council elevates Sho Tay to the largely ceremonial position of Mayor of Arcadia on Tuesday ... The realpolitik here is based on the assumption that Sho will make an awful Mayor. My guess is Tom and Peter figured out that Sho will be much easier to control as Mayor than he would be were they to pass him over and create a political martyr ... I spent almost 25 years in the music business, and from time to time I had to deal with casino entertainment directors in places like Las Vegas and the always noxious Reno. That is what Sho Tay reminds me of, all teeth and no substance ... After a year of his confused and ineffectual rule April Verlato will then become Mayor and have the honor of cleaning up the mess. Just in time for the next election. What timing ... In some ways this represents a defeat for what I call the Developer Party. All of their hard dirty work and look at what they have ended up with. A tap dancing toastmaster currently under a substantial FPPC investigation. They may never recover ... I wonder what Sho Tay's special fire breathing torch bearers are going to think of his apology speech. I doubt that this will be their most favorite evening ever. They will likely end up preferring that previous love fest, just a short 45 days earlier.

So, we the public, are being asked to be quiet? You’ve got to be kidding.

Might work if the developers were not lurking in the shadows. Their greed is stronger than their "good". They expect repayment from their "bought" council people in the form of votes for their projects. How about if any council member who has taken $$ from developers that they not vote on any matter that concerns developers? No? Oh that's right. The crime rate in Arcadia is considerably higher than the national average across all communities in America from the largest to the smallest, although at 30 crimes per one thousand residents, it is not among the communities with the very highest crime rate. The chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime in Arcadia is 1 in 34. Based on FBI crime data, Arcadia is not one of the safest communities in America. Relative to California, Arcadia has a crime rate that is higher than 74% of the state's cities and towns of all sizes. Then, just read some lame apology and get your way as mayor.

I have been forced hiring people to farm for me in my back yard, in order to get food when I can't get ride to supermarket to choose my own vegetables and fruit. Before calling for a ride to visit doctor, I have to set a prayer to God and hopefully he would provide a ride and a doctor's appt fits into the going and returning DAR's offered time. In addition, I have no right to see any doctor outside Arcadia. Unlike the surrounding cities residents. Do you know one of Arcadia Transportation Taskforce member could not even attend the last transportation meeting with city because she could not get a ride from DAR DUE TO SHE IS ON A WHEELCHAIR. This is a city activity but no ride with 3 days ahead in request of the ride. You are a lucky person that does not know how people in wheelchair has to live in this city. Not all wheelchair user can qualify for Access Service. If you live near by a bus with no problem for your upper extremities, you will not be qualified. Sorry! You would think with so many intelligent people living in Arcadia, you could have at least five decent leaders on the CC seats.

Medications are delivered, so are groceries and in home support aides.
It's weird you grow your own, but hire others to pick from your yard in your raised beds, but you say you have to pick your own vegie's from a market.
You get into your power chair yourself, you can get into other modes of trasportation, try a walker until you get to market with powerchairs.
I have the use of a wheelchair, it does not stop me from getting to the mall from using public transportation, with the Goldline you enter from downtown Pasadena.

    1. Dial A Ride was created for use by the handicapped. Why do you have a problem with that?

    2. Sorry! I can't walk without severe pain on my shoulders. As a medical person, I would tell you that everyone has different level of complications and disabilities. If everyone having same level of disability, I don't need to go thru 7 years of education in medical field and try to understand them.

    4. 1:08pm, it was created for handicapped but it was missed used by school children as school buses for decades until June 2016. City than devided DAR resources into 60 percents to fixed routesand and left DAR a total of 40 percent of resources. Blue and Redline fixed routes often running with empty buses most of time. But city insisted more than 1500 people on the buses in a month. Obviously, 40 percent resources will not be enough for the 1400 registered DAR users. Not to mentioned about going out the city for medical appt.. There are a total of 7 cities' DAR buses come to Arcadia. Some of them even for shopping or community center activities. One of the city's DAR even come to our concert in the park in the summer.

  43. If you have never met with a Disabilities Judge or had your case reviewed, then you are taking advantage of the word. Stop. Everyone is differently abled and the exploitation of people in pain or people that are not able to share in the same mobility freedoms you have, should not be used as pawns in scoring points for any arguments.

    1. 3:40 Agree. Thank for bringing us back to center. How did the topic of the differently abled come up? Oh yes. It was about Sho Tay hijacking the Dial a Ride Buses to take non differently abled people out to lunch. Some do not even live in Arcadia. Wrong to divert buses away from those who need them the most. Now we circle back to topic. Sho Tay makes decisions that make him unfit to be mayor. DAR buses being one example.

  46. Indeed Chandler is happily hiding behind the stage of battles after the election. He's been on the CC for much longer time than Sho Tay and has inflicted considerably more damage to the harmonic appearance of the city's residential areas and to the city's reputation as a nice, peaceful bedroom community fitting for raising kids and retiring. He has been the developers' friend consistently for decades.

And don't forget that he and Harbicht both voted yes to demolish the historical Anoakia Mansion and Gardens in Dec. 1999! Arcadians and the people in the greater San Gabriel Valley area lost a treasure forever.

    1. And don't forget Chandler claims on his offical CC page that he created in 1994 the City of Hawaiian Gardens Police Department, which was closed a short three years later as it was a bad idea to begin with for the low-income community.

Hawaiian Gardens went back to using the LA County Sheriff's Department in 1997 and has been using it ever since. Chandler has proved time and again to be lack of leadership foresight, and communities pay dearly for his mistakes.

  47. Tom has requested that we say nothing about Sho Tay. That is contrary to the advice being given to us by our police department, "see something, say something". I see corruption and dishonesty and should say nothing? I see a person robbing Arcadia of its integrity and should say nothing? Mixed messages in Arcadia just confuse the citizens. Guess I just need to dial 911 for emergency advice.

    1. Foreign investors who use houses as piggy banks contributed to the problem. Don't you see so many mansions sit vacant in Arcadia, for example?

    2. Empty McMansions should be seized using eminent domain and turned into low income apartments.

      Delete
    3. Tom has too houses in two different cities. Do you mean he is living inside of both every day. Should it be called empty McMansions?

      Delete
  50. I agree, start in Silicon Valley, San Francisco is a mess of homelessness.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Foreign Investor's are not the problem, but the costs of rents are. Homeless have been on streets for years, before McMansions and no eminent domain low income apartments, just move to a country that has Socialism.
Arcadia? You don't really see many homeless Asians, so what is the Blue States excuse?
