Russian origins of the "#Walk Away Movement."

Mod: Somebody has been dropping the term "#walk away movement" into the comments here on The Tattler almost daily as of late, and in case anyone is curious, here is an article on what exactly that might be, and who is behind it. Are you really surprised?

Here’s how Russia is trying to divide the Democratic Party — and what that means for November (Raw Story link): Conservative and Russian media outlets — amplified by sketchy Twitter accounts — are pushing a social media campaign intended to drive Democratic voters away from the party.

A surge of tweets with the hashtag #WalkAway began June 23 after White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked to leave a Virginia restaurant the night before, and the campaign took off after Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) called for the public shaming of Trump administration officials, reported the blogger Caroline O. for Medium.

The remarkably similar tweets claimed to be from former Democrats who got fed up with the “hate” and “intolerance” of “the left,” and piggybacked off the “civility” debate going on at the time on opinion pages and cable news shows.

Brandon Straka officially started the “#WalkAway Campaign” in May to encourage Democrats to abandon their party, but the hashtag got an artificial boost into the public sphere by automated Twitter accounts identified as linked to Russian influence operations.

“Once upon a time, I was a liberal,” says Straka, a nearly broke New York hairstylist, in his first video.

The video was initially promoted by Fox News host Charles Payne, Trump superfan Bill Mitchell, Turning Point USA head Charlie Kirk and conservative activist Candace Owens, who helped introduce Kanye West to right-wing politics.

Then, after the civility debate kicked off, something weird happened.

The hashtag became one of the most popular topics among suspected Russian bots, which skewed algorithms to push the campaign into suggested search terms on Google products and other social media, and gained popularity among actual Twitter users.

The Russian media outlets Sputnik and RT featured segments and videos on the campaign starting last week, and Straka did an interview with RT this week.

Straka also appeared Tuesday on Laura Ingraham’s Fox News program, and the campaign got coverage on conservative websites such as Breitbart, The Patriot Post, Epoch Times and Legal Insurrection.

Hashtag clouds also revealed #WalkAway was frequently associated with the bizarre #QAnon conspiracy theory to push the narrative that the Democratic Party was “sick” and corrupt.

The campaign targeted racial division and so-called “identity politics,” and Trump himself amplified the movement’s claims that Democrats wanted to abolish ICE and open U.S. borders to criminals.

The Medium blogger said she’d seen similar overlap between Russian influence campaigns and conservative U.S. media, and she warned that more would be coming as November’s midterm elections approached.

“There is reason to believe that this psychological operation — and to be clear, that’s what this is — represents a trial run for future social media manipulation efforts,” Caroline O. wrote.

She suspects the #WalkAway movement could be intended to map out social networks, test messaging and conduct surveillance to study patterns of behavior.

“If you want to cause chaos or just generally stir up trouble, figuring out how to provoke other users — and determining which users are most receptive to provocation — would be extremely helpful,” she wrote. “This is a great reason to heed the advice, ‘Don’t engage the trolls.'”

Mod: The Washington Monthly also has an article up on their site that you can link to here. Now if  our Putin troll pals and their not so brilliant local enablers would just walk away from The Tattler, life would be good.

  1. Has anyone noticed the correlation between the number of 'the faithful' rally's Hitler attended and Trump is attending? To whip up public opinion and make for press releases? It appears the doomed are following the doomed once again.

    1. How many speeches did Obama give to the faithful while he was president? Don’t know the number, but it was many times that of his predecessors.

    2. 6:56 can't distinguish rationale, uplifting speeches calling for everyone to lend a hand to those in need from deplorable rallies designed to throw out red meat and get emotional, frightened deplorables riled up, hating, and voting against their own interests.

  2. Only a fool would believe that Putin has such narrow vision that the only thing he cared about was hurting Hillary and helping Trump. He wants all of our Democratic institutions ("small" and "large" D) in disarray. He wants us all at each other's throats. He wants us all to become disillusioned with electoral politics and to either give up in disgust or train our fire on each other. He doesn't care what potential split he exploits. Russia writes checks to both those who praise and bash Bernie, to those who both praise and bash Maxine, to those who both praise and bash Nancy etc.

Scarborough Shames Trump Rally Crowd For Cheering Attacks on McCain, Bush Sr: ‘The 6,500 Meanest People’

Morning Joe took on President Donald Trump‘s Thursday night rally — in which he attacked Sen. John McCain and former President George H.W. Bush — holding his crowd accountable for encouraging the display.

“To me the worst part of last night,” MSNBC’s Willie Geist said, “is him going after John McCain who’s dying of cancer, again, and George H.W. Bush who just lost his wife and is suffering from Parkinson’s disease.”

During Trump’s rally in Montana, he mocked Bush’s “thousand points of light” quote, and bashing McCain for his vote against Obamacare repeal.

“It’s painful to watch,” GOP political strategist Susan Del Percio said. “This is the President of the United States going after people for a punchline. That’s disgraceful. We should expect more, and just to add on that, he also attacked the press exactly days after five people lost their lives in a shooting.”

  7. The Democratic Party has been splintering for years, just as the Republican Party has.

  8. Yes,the President should be setting a higher standard for the country, yet the country has changed.
For many President Trump represents a candidate that verbally tackled the left leaning party of Democrats. The Democratic party has destroyed what was left of "if you go low, we go high", that has been dispelled over the division of Americans. The calculated attacks on Law Enforcement,Free Spech on Collage campuses, Politicians "acting badly" etc.
Donald J Trump was a Democrat, so the #walkaway movement was occurring years before. The Dems were not expecting "turn about is fair play".
Now that is moving the party further to the Left.
The gamble is, what party will best represent "your" values.

  10. Fox News Admits That Many Conservatives Are Now Supporting Democrats
    https://www.politicususa.com/2018/07/06/fox-news-admits-many-conservatives-are-now-supporting-democrats.html

According to Fox News, the list of conservative Republicans who now say they will be voting for Democrats in this year’s midterm elections is getting longer, but they are clueless as to why this is happening.

In an article called “Divorcing Trump: Why some conservatives are now pushing Democrats (!)“ Howard Kurtz explores this puzzling phenomenon in depth as he attempts to come up with explanations.

Well, it’s actually not puzzling to most Americans, but it is certainly something that is not understood by the viewers of Fox News.

Kurtz does a good job of listing the very prominent (former) conservative Republicans who have become so disgusted by Donald Trump and his cult-like followers that they have now proclaimed their support of Democratic candidates. The list includes:

    Max Boot,
    George Will,
    Jennifer Rubin,
    Steve Schmidt,
    Nicole Wallace, and
    Joe Scarborough.

  14. Traitor Junket - Republicans on Russia trip face scorn and ridicule from critics at home

Republican lawmakers who went to Russia seeking a thaw in relations received an icy reception from Democrats and Kremlin watchers for spending the Fourth of July in a country that interfered in the U.S. presidential election and continues to deny it.

“Cannot believe GOP, once the party that stood strong against Soviets & only a decade ago sought to democratize the Middle East, is now surrendering so foolishly to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and the Kremlin’s kleptocracy — only two years after Russia interfered in U.S. election,” tweeted Clint Watts, an information warfare specialist at the Foreign Policy Research Institute and frequent featured expert before congressional panels examining Russian influence operations.

“Russians wooing with a shopworn song — repugnant as nails on a blackboard,” Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) wrote in a Twitter post in response to the delegation’s trip. “They are enemies and adversaries, attacking us.”

Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) led the eight-member delegation on a multiday tour of St. Petersburg and Moscow, a trip that included meetings with Russia’s foreign minister and parliamentarians. It did not include a session that senators had been hoping for: a meeting with Putin, whom President Trump is scheduled to meet at a summit this month.

Joining Shelby were Sens. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), John Kennedy (R-La.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), John Thune (R-S.D.) and Rep. Kay Granger (R-Tex.).
