Aretha Franklin Tribute: Fox News has an "All Black People Look Alike" Problem

Mod: In its unfortunate Aretha Franklin broadcast tribute, Fox News apparently ran a picture of Patti LaBelle. They originally claimed it was Aretha Franklin's photo. Did they really not know the difference?

Fox News Used A Photo Of Patti LaBelle In An Aretha Franklin Tribute - Should we expect any less? (BET link): Tributes have been pouring in after in honor of late soul music icon Aretha FranklinFox News recently came under fire for their attempt at remembering the Queen of Soul. Instead of using actual pictures of the beloved songstress, the network mistakenly used an image of fellow music legend Patti LaBelle.

In a video segment dedicated to the songstress, Fox News featured a composite image of Franklin in the foreground along with a faded image of LaBelle in the corner.

Fans immediately called the network out for their mishap and insensitivity. Reeling in the backlash, Fox spokeswoman Jessica Santostefano quickly issued an apology to the family, friends and fans of Aretha Franklin.

In a statement to HuffPost, Santostefano said,"We sincerely apologize to Aretha Franklin’s family and friends. Our intention was to honor the icon using a secondary image of her performing with Patti LaBelle in the full screen graphic, but the image of Ms. Franklin was obscured in that process, which we deeply regret."

Fox's attempt at an apology didn't go over too well. After some research, Huff Post found that Fox's image of Patti LaBelle came from the 2014 Women of Soul: In Performance at the White House event where she hit the stage alone.

Making matters even worse, Aretha Franklin never joined the stage with Patti LaBelle and they were never photographed together at the event in question.

The Huge Problem With Fox News’ Apology For Confusing Aretha Franklin And Patti LaBelle (Huffington Post link): Fox News issued a confusing apology after the network showed an image of Patti LaBelle during a segment meant to honor the life of Aretha Franklin, who died Thursday at the age of 76.

The segment featured a composite image that shows Franklin in the foreground and a faded, smaller image of LaBelle in the upper right corner.

“We sincerely apologize to Aretha Franklin’s family and friends,” Jessica Santostefano, Fox News’ vice president, media desk, said in a statement. “Our intention was to honor the icon using a secondary image of her performing with Patti LaBelle in the full screen graphic, but the image of Ms. Franklin was obscured in that process, which we deeply regret.”

What makes the apology so perplexing is that the image of LaBelle used in the video for Franklin is one of LaBelle performing by herself.

The image of LaBelle is from the 2014 event “Women of Soul: In Performance at the White House.” While it featured the likes of Franklin along with Melissa Etheridge, Patti LaBelle, Jill Scott, Janelle Monáe, Tessanne Chin and Ariana Grande, at no time did Franklin and LaBelle share the stage.

Santostefano noted that Franklin’s name is in the description of the image, but it’s pretty clear that the singer herself is not in the photo.

The “Chain of Fools” singer even snubbed LaBelle that night and refused her touch when the two passed one another. So Fox News’ excuse that they wanted to include an image of the iconic singers performing together seems ... off.

Most outlets have made a mistake on a photo or caption at some point in time, but Fox News’ supposed explanation raises more questions than it answers.

  4. Trump rages at social media and the 'sick behavior' of CNN and MSNBC in early morning Twitter rant

As is his custom, President Donald Trump was up early in the morning and lashing out on Twitter at his perceived foes.

On Saturday, he used Twitter to complain that “social media” is discriminating again conservative voices.

“Social Media is totally discriminating against Republican/Conservative voices. Speaking loudly and clearly for the Trump Administration, we won’t let that happen. They are closing down the opinions of many people on the RIGHT, while at the same time doing nothing to others,” he wrote.

He added, “Censorship is a very dangerous thing & absolutely impossible to police. If you are weeding out Fake News, there is nothing so Fake as CNN & MSNBC, & yet I do not ask that their sick behavior be removed. I get used to it and watch with a grain of salt, or don’t watch at all,” before concluding, “Too many voices are being destroyed, some good & some bad, and that cannot be allowed to happen. Who is making the choices, because I can already tell you that too many mistakes are being made. Let everybody participate, good & bad, and we will all just have to figure it out!”

    2. 10:08 That may or not be true. Staying on topic gives the story of the day its due. Trump and the Russians will probably be on the blog next cycle. But, perhaps that is all you know about in your little universe. Besides, I realize that my posting like yours will not change the world or the people in it. Great day to do something unrelated to computers.
