Real Wages are in Decline, While Corporate Profits Soar, After the GOP Tax Cuts

Mod: One of the big effects claimed for the GOP tax bill was increased wealth for all of those folks who get up in the morning and go to work in order to get a paycheck. That is not happening, apparently. Anyone surprised?

Wages drop despite economic boom (The Hill link): Wages in the U.S. fell over the past year despite an ongoing economic boom, according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday.

In the past 12 months through July, real average hourly earnings dropped 0.4 percent. That figure takes into account seasonal differences, as well as the effects of rising prices.

An increase in the length of the average workweek was not enough to compensate for the fall, leaving average weekly earnings down 0.1 percent in the same period.

Over the past month alone, real hourly wages were flat, while real weekly earnings dropped 0.2 percent.

The sluggish advance in wages comes amid an economy that, by other measures, is booming. The economy grew at an annualized rate of 4.2 percent in the second quarter, and unemployment dipped below 4 percent in July.

The dynamic could prove troublesome for Republicans hoping that a thriving economy will boost them in November's midterm elections.

  2. Trump Calls Omarosa 'A Lowlife' After N-Word Claim Surfaces

President Donald Trump on Saturday lashed out at former “Apprentice” contestant and White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman after reports circulated on Friday that her forthcoming book Unhinged portrayed him as a racist. “She’s a lowlife,” he told reporters when asked about Newman, who left the White House last year.

The Guardian, which obtained an advance copy of the book, said Newman writes in her book that Trump used “the N-word” while taping “The Apprentice” and that he was caught on camera. Trump starred on the reality-TV show for years.

Newman also reportedly wrote she heard Trump use other racial epithets to refer to White House counselor Kellyanne Conway’s husband George, who is half-Filipino.

“It had finally sunk in that the person I’d thought I’d known so well for so long was actually a racist,” she wrote, according to The Guardian. “Using the N-word was not just the way he talks but, more disturbing, it was how he thought of me and African Americans as a whole.”

    1. If she was so offended by his remarks, why did she 1: continue with the show, 2 accept a job in the White House? I agree with Trump, she is a low life looking for fame.

    3. Hollywood should demand that Mark Burnett, creator of The Apprentice and current Chairman of MGM Worldwide Television Group, either release purported recordings of Trump using the N-word or state that Trump never did so.

    4. If she’s a low life just looking for fame, then it’s clear trump continues to make bad decisions in who his advisors are. So many have quit or been indicted. Trump is a failure. No strategy for America; only his self aggrandizement.

    6. Why did she work for him if he'd said those things? Several plausible answers.

      a) Because she's far from perfect herself but that doesn't make him any less disgusting - eg your argument is whataboutism.

      b) Because like probably everyone else (including you if you're honest?) at least once in their lives they've put up with an obnoxious boss.

      c) Because she decided she was going to expose him for the stain on humanity he is - hence the recordings. Only possible by being in that position.

'Unite the Right 2' exposes white nationalist movement in disarray

A year after the deadly "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Va., white nationalist groups are treading cautiously into the anniversary weekend.

The violence in Charlottesville sparked damaging lawsuits against the organizers and a crackdown from tech companies that's complicated recruitment and fundraising efforts, splintering the movement just as it's trying to show solidarity heading into Sunday's "Unite the Right 2" demonstration in Washington.

Jason Kessler, a lead organizer of both events, is discouraging participation by the more hard-core elements of the white supremacist movement, and some are happy to sit this one out.

“These post-Charlottesville marches have no purpose, other than to make anyone who supports white self-determination look like a fringe lunatic,” Andrew Anglin, publisher of the Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi website, wrote this month in a blog post disavowing Sunday’s rally. “We do not want the image of being a bunch of weird losers who march around like assholes while completely outnumbered and get mocked by the entire planet.”

  7. I'm watching Omarosa Manigault Newman on Meet the Press. She is impressive because she can actually put two sentences together, unlike our so called Prez. I'll say as I said yesterday, if you are distressed about this administration, and the damage it is doing, find a midterm race that you care about, and work to get the Republican incumbent out of office.

  20. So regular folk in private sector and small business suffer. Meanwhile, my firefighter and police officer neighbors are raking in $200,000+ per year, working 4 day work weeks, taking regular vacations, then retire at 20 years of service?

I should have never got that Ph.D. My wage has stayed nearly flat for YEARS. Who knew back in 1990, when I graduated with my doctorate, that cops and firefighters would be making more than I. Had I known, I should have just got an AA in Fire Science. Bad life choices on my part?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you have a PhD and don’t make that much it definitely was a waste. Police and firefighters make that because their unions protect them. Everyone else’s wages have stagnated or declined because they don’t have unions like they used to… Blame the corporateCEOs ( Who is wages have increased exponentially) not your civil servants who are merely keeping pace while you’ve sidelined yourself

      Delete
    2. @5:49

Your neighbors have it good because of the dirty cop unions and CalPERS. Civil “servants” my a**.

      Delete
    3. I am "5:49." I work at what you might consider the premier space research labratory. The most senior engineers and physicists, including myself, gross approx. $180,000 per annum. Our PhD's are from CalTech, MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley -- all top schoools. I drive a Prius. I have some money saved up and my house is paid full.

I don't live too far from Pasadena Lt. Vasken Gourdikian's home. He has/had these ridiculous luxury cars in his garage and driveway. I hope it could be said that he was the only "public servant" that makes you wonder where they get their income. But that is not the case.

Across the street from where I live is a police captain -- similar luxury cars, but an added (obscene) eyesoar of a speedboat parked on his driveway. This particular captain also manages to get extended leave for his frequent week-long cruise vacations. A firefighter two homes down with also two luxury cars (including a new BMW M5). Then there is the most annoying of all: a junior sheriff deputy a few doors down, just five years "on the force," who obnoxiously brags of his $200,000+ salary to my wife. Heck, I don't even think the deputy has a bachelor's degree! (I do know that the firefighter has an AA from Rio Hondo College (lol).)

If I've outed myself, then so be it. These "public servants" ought to be shamed to the max for taking part in these antics at our expense.

Then I read things like this: LAPD police chief Michel Moore took a $1.27-million payout before being rehired. Hmmm....

      http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-chief-drop-2018-08012-story.html

(FYI, federal employees generally do not make as much as state or local employees. State and local employees, when comparing similar jobs, generally gross more -- often exponentially -- than federal employees. This is especially true when it comes to retirement benefits.)

    4. Personally sick of all the bootlickers who say all cops are “heroes.” The vast majority of cops I encounter (no I do not have a record), either at my place of business or at the gym, seem to have some type of personality disorder and air of arrogance. I’m convinced that a vast majority of cops become cops as payback for being bullied (or being a bully) in high school. From my high school class, all who became cops are from both extremes (the bully and bullied)—with no “balanced” person who chose to enter the LE career path.

Chief Moore takes millions, sets himself up for life, and then turns around saying it's a flawed system that needs work. Hilarious. Typical two face cop. Michel Moore was the #2 guy in the LAPD for years... did he do anything about it? Nope - just collected.

Then, he was about to lose his money to make Chief - does he forgo the windfall? Nope - just took the money and ran. And NOW he'll fix it... because he "got his". HOW does the city, the mayor, the city council, earn the trust of the voters... over and over? Such a sham. If Sleazy Moore had any guts he would have said "hey, I took it - it kept me around - it motivates me to work for 50 years and deal with all this horse-puckey." I could respect that honesty. But this?! He's a weasel... and so is everyone that tolerates him and Yoga Pants.
