Robert Reich: The End of Trump Is Near

Mod: I ran across the following conversation on Daily Kos. Apparently Robert Reich's confidant, a former GOP member of Congress, believes Trump is looking down the barrel at possible impeachment. Yet one more indication that many Republican officials have pretty much had enough of the madness, and may actually pull the plug.

Robert Reich: The End of Trump Is Near (Daily Kos link): This morning I phoned my friend, the former Republican member of Congress.

ME: So, what are you hearing?

HE: Trump is in deep sh*t.

ME: Tell me more.

HE: When it looked like he was backing down on the wall, Rush and the crazies on Fox went ballistic. So he has to do the shutdown to keep the base happy. They’re his insurance policy. They stand between him and impeachment.

ME: Impeachment? No chance. Senate Republicans would never go along.

HE (laughing): Don’t be so sure. Corporate and Wall Street are up in arms. Trade war was bad enough. Now, you’ve got Mattis resigning in protest. Trump pulling out of Syria, giving Putin a huge win. This dumbass shutdown. The stock market in free-fall. The economy heading for recession.

ME: But the base loves him.

HE: Yeah, but the base doesn’t pay the bills.

ME: You mean …

HE: Follow the money, friend.

ME: The GOP’s backers have had enough?

HE: They wanted Pence all along.

ME: So …

HE: So they’ll wait until Mueller’s report, which will skewer Trump. Pelosi will wait, too. Then after the Mueller bombshell, she’ll get 20, 30, maybe even 40 Republicans to join in an impeachment resolution.

ME: And then?

HE: Senate Republicans hope that’ll be enough -- that Trump will pull a Nixon.

ME: So you think he’ll resign?

HE (laughing): No chance. He’s fu*king out of his mind. He’ll rile up his base into a fever. Rallies around the country. Tweet storms. Hannity. Oh, it’s gonna be ugly. He’ll convince himself he’ll survive.

ME: And then?

HE: That’s when Senate Republicans pull the trigger.

ME: Really? Two-thirds of the Senate?

HE: Do the math. 47 Dems will be on board, so you need 19 Republicans. I can name almost that many who are already there. Won’t be hard to find the votes.

ME: But it will take months. And the country will be put through a ringer.

HE: I know. That’s the worst part.

ME: I mean, we could have civil war.

HE: Hell, no. That’s what he wants, but no chance. His approvals will be in the cellar. America will be glad to get rid of him.

ME: I hope you're right.

HE: He’s a dangerous menace. He’ll be gone. And then he'll be indicted, and Pence will pardon him. But the state investigations may put him in the clinker. Good riddance.'

  1. This is a new one from Trump?

Is this a new one from Trump? He says that Mattis was fired by Obama and wanted to give Mattis a second chance! Ummm noooo, Dimwit! You are thinking of the criminal Flynn! Mattis worked in the Pentagon while Obama was president, he retired in 2013 and not fired. Jeez, you now lying about a decorated Marine General impeccable reputation, just so you can look good? Wrong again Captain Bone Spurs!

    1. Actually, Obama canned Mattis. Look it up, I just did.

    3. More accurately, Obama removed "Mad Dog" Mattis as head of CentCom. Obama did not dismiss him from the military. Mattis later retired.

While head of CentCom, Mattis vocally preferred an aggressive, military approach to Iran; Obama preferred reaching a denuclearization agreement. Which one of the two was president?

For those right wingers who shout hypocrisy regarding mainstream concerns about Mattis leaving the Trump Administration, the answer:

Mad Dog Mattis, despite his post military retirement stint on the Board of Theranos, is by far the most adult, rational, and patriotic member of the Trump Administration. He didn't even come close to being most adult, rational, and patriotic member of the Obama Administration.

  3. Brian Kilmeade of Fox & Friends just called out Trump to Sarah Sanders on Syria:

"Sarah, he's giving Russia a big win. Vladimir Putin praised him. He's also doing exactly what he criticized President Obama for doing. He said President Obama was the founder of ISIS. He just refounded ISIS."

  5. I just caught a bit of the Sunday morning show on NPR. The host detailed the week's event - Mattis, McGurk, Syria, shutdown, etc - "For a President who thrives on chaos this week appears to be 'Peak Trump'". That and "Vichy Republicans" (Frank Rich) are the two best phrases I've heard this week.

Then Mara Liasson was on. Granted some of this comes from the White House but she made two interesting points:

    1. The administration doesn't think Trump will suffer any politic fallout from the shutdown.
    and then this...

    2. For his base the wall is is vital and they take it very literally. According to her sources in the White House/Trumpians they don't think he can get re-elected if he doesn't get the wall.

Let think sink in. They feel like they have to actually "go to the wall" on this.

  7. Parkland Survivor David Hogg, Mocked by Fox Host Over College Rejections, Finds Ivy League Comeback

David Hogg, the gun control activist and Parkland high school massacre survivor who was razzed by Fox News host Laura Ingraham after being rejected by four colleges, has found the perfect comeback: He's going to Harvard.

Hogg, a founding member of Never Again MSD, a gun control advocacy group, announced his plans Saturday on Twitter, where he has more than 900,000 followers: “Thank you all for the well wishes, I’ll be attending Harvard in the fall with a planned major in Political Science,” Hogg tweeted.

Another survivor, Jaclyn Corin, a co-founder of the March For Our Lives movement, said on Twitter last week that she was also accepted at Harvard.

Hogg, 18, rose to prominence with his steely account of the horrific ordeal at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where a former student killed 17 people on Valentine's Day. A TV production major and son of a former FBI agent, Hogg coolly taped a real-time video of the incident on his cellphone from inside a classroom as the killer stalked the halls.

    1. How long would Pence last?

Was he involved in the Trump-Russia conspiracy to defraud the US?

We know he was in the Oval when Trump read a draft of the Comey firing letter. Did he provide comments to improve the draft or otherwise aid in its preparation and thus conspire to obstruct justice? He denied involvement and certainly didn't report Trump for the obstruction, so did he commit misprision of felony?

If Trump is impeached and convicted by the Senate or resigns, let's hope Mueller releases a Pence indictment before Pence is sworn in.

  11. Hey Trump, you and your old lady want something to do? Take that trip overseas to see the troops you are so afraid of. You don`t have a thing to do since you shut down the government. They would be glad to see you. You would have a captive audience to cheer you and take your mind off of things back home. Go ahead ask the old lady and see what she says.

  15. A madman is in the White House. And there is no way to fix it.

    He's shut down the government.

He's f*cking every refugee at the Mexican border fleeing from rape, torture, murder.

He's pulling our troops out of Syria, which means death for our Syrian allies, and perhaps the end of any hope for a nation, or even survival for the Kurds.

He's destroying our economy which is tied to the world economy. Another Great Depression?

And it ain't just him. Every fucking Republican is part and parcel of the disaster named Donald Trump.

As of January 3rd, there will be opposition. Nancy Pelosi will let the orange motherf***er know that there's another branch of government.

How will the crazy bastard react to this? Nuke Korea, Iran, or San Francisco? Who knows.

The only certainty is that either this madman must be dragged from the White House as soon as possible. Or America, as we have known it, is over.

Hyperbole? Tell me where I'm wrong. Show me another scenario. Tell us all how this insanity ends.

Nobody. Mnuchin's golfing in Baja California. He's not capable of telling Trump anything, anyhow.

There's no Chief of Staff. No Defense Secretary. The Acting Attorney General has no clue. Trump's running unfettered by any reasonable advice right now. He's operation on his own addled instincts and complete lack of knowledge.

Doesn't look good. Not good at all. He has surrounded himself with toadies and when someone leaves, he just leaves the position open or moves some Deputy up to avoid having nobody who wants the jobs.

Trump is about to implode on himself. Stand well back!
