Blackmailed? Michael Cohen suggests the GOP took illegal donations from China — and he has the evidence

Mod: If this is proven true, Cohen might be able to explain why the GOP is so subservient to Trump.

Michael Cohen suggests the GOP took illegal donations from China — and he has the evidence (Raw Story link): On Thursday, President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen announced he had uncovered a hard drive with 14 million files including “e-mails, voice recordings, images, and attachments from Mr. Cohen’s computers and phones,” and is prepared to hand them over to House Democrats to stay out of federal prison.

But his subsequent memo to lawmakers, first reported by BuzzFeed News, contains a stunning allegation not just about Trump, but about the Republican Party as a whole.

According to the memo, by Cohen attorneys Lanny Davis, Michael Monico, and Carly Chocron, this trove of evidence indicates “possible federal campaign finance violations by the Republican National Committee, including possibly illegal conduiting of illegal substantial donations to the RNC by foreign nationals, including from China.”

Cohen, who also served as deputy finance chair of the Republican National Committee, was sentenced to three years in prison for bank fraud, tax evasion, and campaign finance violations related to his payoffs to porn star Stormy Daniels to cover up her affair with the president.

He claims that he did this with the president’s blessing, and has subsequently sought to cooperate with both House Democrats and federal prosecutors with the Southern District of New York.

  1. Pro-Trump Man Charged With Threatening to Kill Rep. Ilhan Omar

The upstate New York man who was arrested on Friday for allegedly threatening to assassinate Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, phoned her office last month and called her “a fucking terrorist,” according to a criminal complaint released on Saturday.

Patrick W. Carlineo, the complaint alleges, called Omar’s office on March 21 and asked a staffer if they worked for the Muslim Brotherhood, vowing “I’ll put a bullet in her fucking skull” before spelling his name and leaving his contact information including his cell phone number. The call was immediately referred to United States Capitol Police who reached out to the FBI.

When being interviewed by the FBI one week later, the 55-year-old Carlineo was defiant, the complaint states, telling a federal investigator that “if our forefathers were still alive, they’d put a bullet in her head.”

“Carlineo stated that he was a patriot, that he loves the President, and that he hates radical Muslims in our government,” the complaint reads.

    2. Trump supporters have now been charged with threatening to kill two Democratic Congresswomen—Maxine Waters & Ilhan Omar—and the mainstream media barely bats an eye and never connects Trump’s violent rhetoric to the crimes. That’s what institutionalized white supremacy looks like.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will receive this year’s John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award in recognition of her efforts to pass the Affordable Care Act and restore Democrats’ majority in the US House of Representatives during the 2018 elections. The honor will be presented to Pelosi, a California Democrat, on May 19.

In a statement, Caroline Kennedy said Pelosi “leads with strength, integrity and grace under pressure — using her power to protect the most vulnerable of our citizens.”

  11. Buttigieg blasts 'hypocrisy' of evangelicals for supporting Trump

Pete Buttigieg, who is Christian, said during an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" that Trump "acts in a way" that is inconsistent with what he hears in church.

"It’s something that really frustrates me because the hypocrisy is unbelievable," he said of evangelical support for Trump. "Here you have somebody who acts in a way that is not only not consistent with anything that I hear in scripture or in church, where it’s about lifting up the least among us and taking care of strangers, which is another word for immigrants, and making sure that you’re focusing your effort on the poor."

"But also personally how you’re supposed to conduct yourself," he added, saying that Trump is at odds with a religion that calls for "humbling yourself before others." Buttigieg added that he's surprised conservative Christians support Trump despite him having been "caught writing hush-money checks to adult-film actresses," a reference to payments Trump's attorney made during the 2016 campaign to quiet allegations by Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal that they had affairs with Trump.

“Even on the version of Christianity that you hear from the religious right, which is about sexual ethics, I can’t believe that somebody who is caught writing hush-money checks to adult-film actresses is somebody they should be lifting up as the kind of person you want to be leading this nation," Buttigieg said.

Buttigieg's remarks come after he said last week that it's hard for him to believe that Trump believes in God. “I'm reluctant to comment on another person's faith," Buttigieg told USA Today. "But I would say it is hard to look at this president's actions and believe that they're the actions of somebody who believes in God."
