Former director of national intelligence makes it clear that Trump would not have won without Russia’s help

Mod: Today is Memorial Day, as good a time as any to reflect upon the strong perception that America's most tragic defeat did not come at the hands of any foreign country alone, but by treason and willful ignorance here at home as well. All of which continues to this day.

Former director of national intelligence makes it clear that Trump would not have won without Russia’s help (AlterNet link): When Donald Trump produced the first list of names for his death list this week, he didn’t include that of former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper. But Clapper appears to be out to remedy this oversight by pointing out the fact that the Trump campaign didn’t just cooperate with Russia—it’s extremely unlikely Trump would have been elected without Russian support.

As Newsweek reports, Clapper’s just-released memoirs don’t shy away from drawing the obvious conclusion about the impact of the Russian interference and the benefits to Trump. As Clapper writes, “Surprising even themselves, [Russia] swung the election to a Trump win. To conclude otherwise stretches logic, common sense and credulity to the breaking point. Less than eighty thousand votes in three key states swung the election. I have no doubt that more votes than that were influenced by this massive effort by the Russians.”

Not only did the intelligence community have the information they needed to see that Russian interference was more than sufficient to cover Trump’s narrow margin of electoral victory—Trump knows it. Because the information Clapper is referencing was included in the first presentation that the intelligence community gave to Trump in January 2017.

Clapper is also clear in exactly why there wasn’t a larger effort in 2016 to fight back against Russia launching a military operation to interfere in a U.S. election.”House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said they would not support a bipartisan statement that might hurt their nominee for president,” wrote Clapper. “It seemed they had decided by then that they didn’t care who their nominee was, how he got elected or what effects having a foreign power influence our election would have on the nation, as long as they won.”

Trump has referenced Clapper dozens of times in Twitter and in his rally speeches. At first he claimed that the DNI had absolved Trump of any collaboration with Russia, though that wasn’t what Clapper said. Then that Clapper had written a “beautiful letter” praising Trump. But by the time that the Mueller investigation began, Trump listed Clapper among the “liars” who were conspiring against him, including FBI Director James Comey and CIA Director John Brennan. The former DNI also became a frequent target of attacks on Fox News, including by Trump favorites Hannity and Fox and Friends.

  1. Trump didn’t win.

He didn’t win the popular vote, and without the election fraud, illegal gerrymandering and extreme voter suppression it’s clear he didn’t win the electoral college either.

    ILLEGITIMATE.

A common white nationalist theme. That is where people live who are not overwhelmingly white. Trump lost the popular vote because of the two coasts. The predominantly white states are overrepresented in the electoral college.

  13. The Trump coverup no one is talking about: The emperor has no money.

    E. J. Dionne points out that Trump has no control over the purse strings, and that severely limits his power to negotiate anything with the Democratic House.

"From the moment Trump, Pelosi and Schumer announced their convergence on a $2 trillion infrastructure plan last month, Mulvaney began sabotaging it. “Is it difficult to pass any infrastructure bill in this environment, let alone a $2 trillion one, in this environment? Absolutely,” Mulvaney said.

He was far from alone because the entire Republican leadership in Congress is now part of the Knuckledraggers Caucus. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell quickly signaled that he had absolutely no interest in a big infrastructure plan if it required rolling back any part of the GOP’s 2017 corporate tax cut.

Democrats argue that because business is clamoring for infrastructure, it would make sense to ask business to foot part of the bill. They have suggested raising the corporate tax rate to 25 percent from the 21 percent enshrined in the 2017 law and pulling back on some of its other provisions.

No way, say the Republicans. A “nonstarter,” declared McConnell. Faced with the choice of bridges collapsing in a heap or reining in the tax giveaways, the bridges don’t have much of a chance.

Note that the meeting Trump sabotaged was about how to finance the plan. He had no way of coming up with anything constructive because, for all of his bravado, he is totally under the thumb of Congress’s conservative ideologues. His tantrum was part of the coverup no one is talking about: The emperor has no money."

On Memorial Day weekend, 3 years ago, Trump criticized Obama for not discussing “the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor while he’s in Japan.” I wonder if a journalist might want to ask him whether he’s going to bring it up now that he’s in Japan, as president, on Memorial Day weekend?

  16. Million Dollar Donation To Trump's Inaugural Comes Under Scrutiny

WASHINGTON (AP) ― Real estate mogul Franklin Haney contributed $1 million to President Donald Trump’s inaugural committee and all he’s got to show for the money is the glare of a federal investigation.

The contribution from Haney, a prolific political donor, came as he was seeking regulatory approval and financial support from the government for his long-shot bid to acquire the mothballed Bellefonte Nuclear Power Plant in northeastern Alabama. More than two years later, he still hasn’t closed the deal.

Haney’s hefty donation to Trump’s inaugural committee is being scrutinized by federal prosecutors in New York who are investigating the committee’s finances. Their probe is focused in part on whether donors received benefits after making contributions.

Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, has given prosecutors information regarding Haney, his son and business associate, Frank Haney Jr., and the nuclear plant project, according to a person familiar with what Cohen told the authorities. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity.

  25. He couldn't beat Hillary in a flat out Presidential race. He may not have requested Russian assistance but one way or another it was offered and accepted by his administration. The part I feel is treason is the fact that the Trump administration accepted the Russians assistance, knowing what it was and how it was obtained. In order to use the Electoral to win the election. Then admitting worldwide that Russia helped him win. He should have been taken into custody on the spot after admitting he accepted foreign assistance to win the election. The obvious obstruction instances alone should be enough for impeachment. Admitting nationally that the elite do not and have not paid taxes because it is a game? Who in this country can openly admit that he and other elite do not pay taxes and makes a joke out it a d be arrested? President or not that has got to be illegal. The near countless lies and deliberate misleading misinformation he and his administration spew literally almost daily to the American people. The clear and obvious fact that Trump is biased, especially towards people of color. Anyone of these is unacceptable for a President, Senate, Congressman / woman, basically any political position. We used to be a country that other nations feared and respected. Now, we are the worlds biggest joke / reality TV thanks to Trump. A complete disgrace and he shames this country with blatant disregard for everything this country is supposed to stand for.
