Air Force says Trump's border wall money grab will endanger national security

Mod: Why would Russia's #1 asset in America give a hoot about US national security?

Air Force says Trump's border wall money grab will endanger national security (Daily Kos link): Donald Trump’s border wall money grab from military construction projects is endangering schools on military bases, a power substation in Puerto Rico, and national security. NBC News has obtained an Air Force report on the risks coming from delaying 51 projects around the world, and the details are scary.

Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska could be rendered completely unusable by a boiler failure that would force an evacuation and leave the base frozen and damaged.

Guam was supposed to get a facility to store more than $1 billion in munitions. Now those munitions won’t get their storage facility, which is … one way to disarm the U.S. military, I guess?

“If not funded,” the main gate at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey, which indeed will not be funded thanks to Trump’s wall, “remains vulnerable to hostile penetration in the midst of contingency operations and an increased terrorist threat.”

This part is interesting, too: “One of the major areas affected were military construction projects supporting the European Defense Initiative (EDI), a program intended to increase U.S. military presence in Europe to deter Russian aggression. In some cases, without the construction projects, the bases identified as part of EDI cannot support the deployment of US airmen or assets.”

So if you want to know where Trump’s priorities are, the answer is extremely simple: border wall. Border wall over educating military kids, border wall over power in Puerto Rico, border wall over safely storing munitions, border wall over keeping an Air Force base in Alaska from freezing, border wall over deterring Russian aggression.

  1. Federal Appeals Court Rules Seth Rich's Family Can Sue Fox News

Seth Rich’s family can sue Fox News over the retracted story it ran on a far-right conspiracy theory surrounding their son’s death.

A federal appeals court in Manhattan on Friday ruled against a previous district court’s order to dismiss their lawsuit complaint, arguing that the family, Joel and Mary Rich, could in fact sue over emotional distress they claim was caused by the May 2017 article. The article alleged that Seth Rich had leaked Democratic National Committee emails to WikiLeaks and implied that that move had resulted in his murder. The article was retracted a week later for not meeting Fox News’ journalistic standards.

Circuit Judge Guido Calabresi argued in the Friday ruling that the Riches had “sufficiently pleaded extreme and outrageous conduct” by the Fox News defendants.

In a statement shared with TPM Friday, Fox News expressed its condolences to the family but maintained the network was innocent of the allegations.

  4. Schiff accuses top intel official of illegally withholding 'urgent' whistleblower complaint

Schiff indicated that he learned the matter involved "potentially privileged communications by persons outside the Intelligence Community," raising the specter that it is "being withheld to protect the President or other Administration officials." In addition, Schiff slammed Maguire for consulting the Justice Department about the whistleblower complaint "even though the statute does not provide you discretion to review, appeal, reverse, or countermand in any way the [inspector general's] independent determination, let alone to involve another entity within the Executive Branch."

"The Committee can only conclude, based on this remarkable confluence of factors, that the serious misconduct at issue involves the President of the United States and/or other senior White House or Administration officials," Schiff wrote in a letter to Maguire on Friday.

  5. NASCAR shocks gun industry as it appears to block some firearm ads

NASCAR rejected advertisements for its souvenir programs from multiple firearms companies earlier this summer as part of what is being seen as a "gradual shift" in its position on guns.

The move may be another example of how major companies are adjusting as the nation grapples with guns in America.

While the move did not get widespread notice, NASCAR'S apparent shift stunned gun enthusiasts who said there is a large overlap between NASCAR fans and gun owners, and left some in the firearms industry questioning why NASCAR's viewpoint has shifted and where the racing organization now stands on Second Amendment issues.

"They've got the drivers shooting off blanks in the winner's circle. It doesn't make any sense," David Dolbee, the general manager for K-Var Corp., a large distributor of firearms, which submitted an advertisement that was rejected featuring an AK-47 and various accessories.

  7. Great news, 8:40. The only thing that annoys me in any context is when these nutcases are called "gun enthusiasts." Some may be, but the majority seem to be enablers of mass shooters because we have such lax laws. My friend's husband loves hunting (which I don't get, but oh well, beside the point). He took his then ten year old daughter with him to go dove hunting. He shot a dove, and she freaked out, "OMG, you KILLED it! It's dead! Daddy, how could you do that?" Uh, yeah, exactly! If you believe anyone can have an assault rifle, no background checks, tell the families of the DEAD FOREVER people who got killed in Gilroy, El Paso, Dayton.
