Even the Republican witnesses make Donald Trump look like a depraved criminal

Mod: Between wacked out Jumpin' Gym Jordan and Devin Nunes aka the guy who is suing a Cow, it hasn't been very pretty for Trumpies. It will only get worse for them.

Even the Republican witnesses make Donald Trump look like a depraved criminal - GOP called witnesses Kurt Volker and Tim Morrison portray Trump as a conspiracy theorist who must be controlled (Slate link): The second half of Tuesday's hearing offered something new in the Donald Trump impeachment inquiry: Witnesses called by the Republican minority on the House Intelligence Committee. It's understandable why Republicans wanted these two men.

One of them was Tim Morrison, a former National Security Council aide who is among the few people directly exposed to Trump's famous phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky who claims to believe there was nothing wrong with it. The other was Kurt Volker, a former special envoy to Ukraine, who appears to have been a major actor in Trump's extortion scheme in that country. Indeed, Volker was deemed one of the "three amigos" — along with Energy Secretary Rick Perry and Trump donor/EU ambassador Gordon Sondland — who Trump entrusted with Ukrainian relations as he exerted increasing pressure on the country's leaders to give into his extortion scheme.

But even though these two were Republican witnesses, they still made the case for impeachment stronger. Morrison even confirmed the central allegation against Trump — that the president was conditioning military aid on a public statement from Zelensky about "investigations" into Democrats.

To drive this home, House Democratic counsel Daniel Goldman made Volker read many of those text messages out loud, illustrating the extent of his involvement — and the implausibility of Volker's claim that he didn't know what ultimate goal he was serving by exerting pressure on Zelensky.

It's complicated! But the big takeaway here is that even though Volker was one of the Republican witnesses, his focus on covering his rear end meant that his testimony only damaged the Republican effort to distract from Trump's crimes. Volker repeatedly denounced Trump and Giuliani's attacks on Biden, calling them a "conspiracy theory" and saying it wasn't "credible" in any way that Biden had done what Trump is accusing him of doing. He also tried to defend himself by portraying Trump as a babbling moron who is best ignored. (Which was, to be honest, the most believable argument Volker had to offer.)

Jim Jordan Trips Over His Asshole Trying To Malign Lt. Colonel Vindman (Vanity Fair link): Hello, and welcome to week two of the impeachment inquiry’s public hearings. Last week the House Intelligence Committee heard testimony from career officials concerning Donald Trump’s plot to extort Ukraine for personal gain, which Republicans rejected as hearsay because it came from people who were not on the infamous July 25 phone call. This morning the witnesses included Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman and Mike Pence aide Jennifer Williams, who were listening in as Trump asked Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky to do him a “favor,” meaning the GOP has had to pivot in its sad, sad defense of the president. And here’s what it’s come up with: trying, and failing, to suggest Vindman, a decorated Army veteran who received a Purple Heart in 2004, can’t be trusted.

Not surprisingly, that honor went to resident angry man Jim Jordan, who read from the deposition of National Security Council adviser Tim Morrison, who, according to Jordan, expressed “concerns” about Vindman’s judgment. “So your boss had concerns about your judgment,” Jordan said. “Your former boss, Dr. [Fiona] Hill, had concerns about your judgment. Your colleagues had concerns about your judgment. And your colleagues felt that there were times when you leaked information. Any idea why they have those impressions, Colonel Vindman?” Jordan asked, clearly thinking he’d nailed the guy.

To which Vindman, perhaps expecting the attempted smear, responded by reading a performance evaluation written by Hill earlier this year. “Alex is a top 1% military officer and the best Army officer I have worked with in my 15 years of government service,” Vindman said, quoting Hill. “He is brilliant, unflappable, and exercises excellent judgment...Exemplary during numerous visits...I think you get the idea.” Turning to Morrison, Vindman added, “I can’t say why Mr. Morrison questioned my judgment. We had only recently started working together. He wasn’t there very long, and we were just trying to figure out our relationship. Maybe it was different cultures, military culture versus—”

Realizing that his initial questioning wasn’t panning out as he’d hoped, Jordan interjected, “And colonel, you never leaked information?” Vindman replied, “I never did, never would. That is preposterous that I would do that.” Vindman did not ask Jordan to read from any of his performance reviews, which was probably for the best given that the representative from Ohio has been accused by multiple individuals of ignoring sexual abuse on the Ohio State wrestling team, a charge he has denied.

Majority of Americans support ousting Trump from office, new poll shows (Politico link): Seventy percent of Americans said President Donald Trump was wrong to pressure Ukraine’s leader to pursue probes into his political opponents, according to a new survey, and more than half of respondents indicated he should be removed from office. An ABC News/Ipsos poll published Monday found that 51 percent of those surveyed believed Trump should be impeached by House lawmakers, as well as convicted by the Senate. Six percent said that while Trump’s actions were wrong and that he should be impeached, he should not be ousted by the Senate.

  1. Sondland briefed Pompeo on Trump’s Ukraine scheme — and secretary of state signed off on it

President Donald Trump’s ambassador to the European Union kept Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the loop on efforts to pressure Ukraine’s president to announce an investigation of Joe Biden.

Gordon Sondland notified Pompeo in mid-August of a draft statement he’d produced with another U.S. diplomat and Ukrainian officials that they hoped would persuade Trump to invite Volodymyr Zelensky to the Oval Office, reported the New York Times.

  3. Poll: Young people think Trump is racist, dishonest, 'mentally unfit for office'

As President Donald Trump's approval ratings ebb and flow, a new poll reveals a negative view of the commander in chief among America's youngest populations.

The new AP/MTV poll reveals a slim 33 percent of Americans ages 15 to 34 approve of Trump's White House performance. This response comes as Trump's weekly approval stood at 39 percent with Gallup last week.

  8. It has been entertaining to watch snippets of the impeachment hearings. Yesterday's testimonies gave the largest laugh at Schiffs expense along with those Democrats in the hearings when their star witnesses told them the truth that they were drawn into this circus of the House Intelligence hearings soly for Adam Schiffs ego and because Speaker Nancy Pelosi has lost control over her party.

Still butt hurt that the Soviet Union collapsed or is it because Russia is so backward that it has the same GDP as Italy despite the far larger population? If you're an American, which you clearly do not support, why do you accuse America's entire intelligence community of lying when it says that Russia interfered in 2016, Russia is interfering now, and Russia will interfere in 2020? Trump and his minions colluded with Russia just as they tried to bribe and extort personal services for Trump in Ukraine. So why do you hate America so much?

  10. When viewing the impeachment interviews headed by the Democrats, one comes away with the feeling the Communist-Republicans are floundering & with no direction other than make loud noises and fouling up any and all facts presented. Lectures are not questions and that appears to be the only talking points the Communist-Republicans have to belch out, very loudly. Rude crude and ignorant are the only talking points, used to try and defend (djt). In short time is a wasting lets get on with the hanging on the White House lawn, being that he is guilty as SIN.

The question about wearing the uniform during hearings, when an individual has not worn their uniform well over 10 years but has worn a suit on the job instead, it brings into curiosity as to why now? The Military has restrictions on the length of time an individual has been out of uniform since their service to this country; unless they have chosen to be intern in full dress upon their departure or end of of their life.

  18. Trump Accuses Vindman of Becoming a War Hero Just to Make Him Look Bad

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Moments after the decorated veteran testified to Congress on Tuesday, Donald Trump accused Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman of becoming a war hero “just to make me look bad.”

In a vicious broadside on Twitter, Trump claimed that Vindman carried out an “evil plan, years in the making” to “load himself up with medals” that would give his future testimony against Trump greater credibility.

“Fifteen years ago, he went to fight in Iraq, thinking to himself, ‘Boy, this is going to help me when I try to attack Trump someday,’ ” Trump tweeted. “This is how the Never Trumpers roll.”

When Vindman earned a Purple Heart, Trump wrote, “His scheme to attack me personally really started coming together.”

Trump contrasted Vindman, whom he called a “disgraceful showboat,” unfavorably with Representative Devin Nunes, whom he labelled “a great American.”

“Say what you will about Devin Nunes, he’ll never go and do something heroic,” Trump tweeted.
