Coronavirus cases are rising faster in states that voted for Trump: Nate Silver

Mod: Not really as surprising as some might think. Plus in blue states they count a lot better than in red states.

Coronavirus cases are rising faster in states that voted for Trump: Nate Silver (Raw Story link): The novel coronavirus, not being sentient and knowing nothing about human ways, has no political affiliation and doesn’t discriminate between Democrats and Republicans as it spreads across the country. However, according to statistical expert Nate Silver, the data so far indicate that the virus is spreading more readily in states that voted for President Donald Trump.

While there is no definitive reason this is happening, one possible factor could be in the difference between Democratic and Republican governors’ political responses.

Plenty of Republican governors, like Mike DeWine (R-OH) and Larry Hogan (R-MD) have acted promptly and taken the necessary measures to restrict public gatherings and business as the virus has spread. However, a number of others haven’t been as quick. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has dragged his feet on shutting down public beaches, and is declining to issue a statewide shelter-in-place order. Meanwhile, Gov. Tate Reeves (R-MS) has gone so far as to ban city governments from enacting their own curfews and business restrictions.

Trump himself has repeatedly tried to downplay the severity of the situation, suggesting multiple times the virus would go away soon, and more recently urging states to lift their restrictions and let normal business activity resume despite medical advice.

Poll: Only 1 in 3 Americans find Trump's coronavirus briefings at the White House helpful  (Business Insider link): Fewer than one third of Americans think that President Donald Trump's daily coronavirus task force briefings are useful, an Insider poll found.

Trump has held daily briefings with the administration's coronavirus task force, helmed by Vice President Mike Pence, and a rotating cast of health experts and administration officials, who provide updates about the country's progress in combating the coronavirus.

Health officials like Dr. Anthony Fauci, the administration's top infectious disease expert, have been praised for delivering concise updates about how the virus is spreading and the government's efforts to identify treatments and vaccines.

But the briefings can quickly descend into chaos, as Trump contradicts his experts on matters such as not-yet-approved treatments for the coronavirus and guidance from health officials about how long Americans will need to maintain social distancing practices. The president has also used his pulpit to attack journalists and attempt to rebrand the coronavirus with the xenophobic moniker "Chinese virus."

  1. NEWS Seattle Public Radio Station Will No Longer Air Trump Briefings Over ‘Pattern Of False’ Information

KUOW, a public radio station in Washington state, will no longer air White House press briefings on the coronavirus “due to a pattern of false or misleading information provided that cannot be fact checked in real time.”

Their decision comes as President Trump faces growing criticism for contradicting his own public health officials.

“KUOW is monitoring White House briefings for the latest news on the coronavirus — and we will continue to share all news relevant to Washington State with our listeners,” the station said in a tweet.

“However, we will not be airing the briefings live due to a pattern of false or misleading information provided that cannot be fact checked in real time,” it added.

  2. Find: Dr. John Campbell, British medical statistician (maybe retired MD) and his pod casts. Start with 3/25/2020 and work back through all that apply to Covid 19. Comment on "over by easter" is spot on.

  3. To journalists at the "Covid19 Task Force press briefing: When one of your colleagues askes a question of Trump and is told that is nasty question, or told you are a terrible reporter, or answers the question in a avoiding way or with misinformation--ask the same question again, word for word if you could. Don't let this maniac posing as a president get away with this!

    1. Actually 7:11, I've seen it happen. Sometimes the same reporter doesn't repeat the question, the next one Trump calls on does. Every once in a great while Pence will jump in with a legitimate answer.

  4. All the cameras and microphones should turn away from Trump and Pence during this time; their failings are so big they are wasting our time. How can we listen to an orange faced clown at a time like this?? Why???

    1. My son, and several others I've talked to, turn off the sound until one of the grownups starts speaking. I was chronicling Trump's second grade vocabulary (posted here as a comment) - tremendous, never been done/seen before, great - but can't even bear to watch or listen. That's when I go for my walk. Sadly, many people are still listening to him.

  12. And this is news? Wait a few weeks and see them rise then. I predict thousands and thousands in the south and other turd boy states will get it, especially now that he has given them permission to stop social distancing and to go to church on Easter - - let's wait and see how many cases will be linked to stupid morons going to church and being in such close proximity to others. and a lot of these people are elderly . .. he is purposely trying to "thin" the herds .

  15. Trump sends cease, desist letter on ad featuring one giant sound bite of his mad coronavirus musings

Donald Trump is angry. The Democratic Super PAC Priorities USA assembled an ad that features the sound bites of Trump and Trump only, and guess what? Turns out he’s an unhinged maniacal liar who’s gotten everything about the coronavirus wrong. That may not be news to you, but it is apparently news to Trump. And his dangerously factless musings on the coronavirus over the past several weeks have not worn well.

So on Wednesday, a Trump campaign attorney released a cease and desist letter demanding that TV stations across the nation pull the ad immediately. “On behalf of Donald J. Trump for President, Inc., President Trump’s principal campaign committee, this letter notifies you that your station is airing a patently false, misleading, and deceptive advertisement,” wrote Alex Cannon, special counsel to Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. “Because [the] ad’s central point is deliberately false and misleading, your station has an obligation to cease and desist from airing it immediately to comply with FCC licensing requirements, to serve the public interest, and to avoid costly and time-consuming litigation.” Um, yeah, the ad simply regurgitates all Trump’s falsehoods on the virus, sound bite by sound bite. So if it’s “patently false” and “misleading,” that’s because Trump narrates the entire thing in his own words.

But you know what this all means, right? You absolutely must watch it below and share it far and wide.

  21. It’s all shocking. But none of it’s surprising. Republicans define their party on the benefits of never doing anything to help anyone except financial markets after they crash them by not doing anything. And trump? Those who knew him said it would end in disaster. Now it’s here.

  22. Trump Throws A Delusional Tantrum and Blames the Media for Coronavirus Shutdown. It is not the media that is pushing back against Trump. It’s doctors, scientists, and governors who are resisting Trump’s call to bring the economy back to business as usual. The country is in the early stages of a coronavirus pandemic and by no metric is it ready to return to normal activity. Donald Trump doesn’t have the power to force the states to lift the coronavirus restrictions. The governors are putting the nation ahead of Trump’s reelection campaign, and there is nothing that Trump can do to prevent them from placing public health first.

  27. 1918 and 2020 in perspective.
In 1918, a new influenza virus emerged. During this same time period World War I was taking place. The conditions of World War I (overcrowding and global troop movement) helped the 1918 flu spread. The vulnerability of healthy young adults and the lack of vaccines and treatments created a major public health crisis, causing at least 50 million deaths worldwide, including approximately 675,000 in the United States. Below is a historical timeline of major events that took place during this time period.
