There is now as much military activated in the US as there are active duty troops in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan

Mod: With Trump there is always a next worse step. This is starting to look like the latest disaster. A Trump run military deployed in the streets of the United States of America. Have we just now become Venezuela, complete with vainglorious crackpot Generalissimo?

There are as many National Guard members activated in the US as there are active duty troops in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan (CNN link): As thousands across the US take to the streets for another day of protests demanding justice for George Floyd, more than 17,000 members of the National Guard are standing ready to support local law enforcement.

That represents approximately the same number of active duty troops deployed in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. As of Monday, nearly half of the US has activated guard members to respond to civil unrest.

On top of the District of Columbia, the 23 states that have activated the National Guard are: Arizona, Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

Additionally, about 45,000 National Guard members are supporting the Covid-19 response across all 50 states, three territories and D.C., bringing the total number of activated National Guard soldiers and airmen to 66,700.

Trump Pledges to Deploy Troops Across the U.S. Amid Protests (Bloomberg link): President Donald Trump promised a forceful response to violent protests across the country and threatened to deploy the U.S. military if cities and states fail to contain unruly demonstrations set off by the death of a black man in police custody.

During hastily arranged remarks Monday evening, Trump pledged to do everything he could to preserve order, including in Washington, where vandalism, looting and fires overshadowed three days of peaceful protests over the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week.

“I am mobilizing all available federal resources civilian and military to stop the rioting and looting to end the destruction and arson and to protect the rights of law abiding Americans,” Trump said from the Rose Garden at the White House.

Moments before the president spoke, as White House officials prepared for his remarks, security forces used tear gas and concussion grenades to clear peaceful protesters from streets around Lafayette Square across from the White House. After his brief address, he made an unannounced visit on foot to the historic Saint John’s Episcopal Church less than a day after it was damaged by fire during demonstrations late Sunday night.

Mod: The military isn't especially happy, either.

Pentagon officials express concern as Trump threatens to use military to 'dominate' protestors (CNN link): Defense officials tell CNN there was deep and growing discomfort among some in the Pentagon even before President Donald Trump announced Monday that he is ready to deploy the military to enforce order inside the United States.

As tear gas wafted through the air in Lafayette Park across from the White House, Trump announced from the Rose Garden that if state or city leaders refuse "to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents," he will invoke the Insurrection Act, an 1807 law that allows a president to deploy the US military to suppress civil disorder.

But some Pentagon officials are deeply wary, several defense officials tell CNN. They have tried to respond by making a strong case that the situation does not yet call for deploying active duty troops unless state governors make a clear argument that such forces are needed. There is also discomfort with the civil order mission among some National Guard troops -- more of whom are now mobilized inside the US than at any previous time in history.

  2. Gov Whitman to Dump: Go back to your bunker and let the real leaders solve our problems.

    Governor Christine Todd Whitman ✔ @GovCTW - 12:14 PM - Jun 1, 2020

@realDonaldTrump, Please stop injecting yourself into crises. Don’t try to tell governors what to do. Instead of calling for calm & for the nation to unite, you were sequestered in the White House basement & silent.

Governors and mayors, on the other hand, were actively engaged in trying to bring order to their cities and towns. The #NationalGuard has been deployed across the country and most of the demonstrations were largely peaceful. While you only seem to feel the need for the use of more force, local elected leaders tried to control things in a way that will allow them to build for the future.

While you just want to condemn people, real leaders are acknowledging the very real racial issues we are facing. In times like this, real leaders step up, and deal with the immediate problems while acknowledging the need for reform at all levels: police, eduction, housing, economic opportunity & more.

This country desperately needs a real leader at the helm to deal with our racial issues, the #coronavirus, all those who are out of work, climate change and the myriad of other issues facing us. We need a leader to plan for the future.

You, Mr. #President, are not that leader. In fact, you are making things worse on almost every front. Please, go back to your bunker and let the real leaders solve our problems.

  5. Trump is so disappointed in his MAGA Army. When protestors were gathering across from the White House, he sent out the message that it was "MAGA night", expecting the red hats to show up, with the motorcycle gangs and the camo-warriors, armed to the teeth.

But, none of them showed up. Somehow they had lost the courage they had when they marched into the state capitols, flaunting their weapons and sparking fear into many honest citizens. Perhaps they were in the bunker with Mr Trump?

He now realizes that they are much like him. They cannot be trusted. Their loyalty does not extend to putting their own safety in danger.

  7. IMPOTUS, embarrassed by protestors and the media for hiding in his bunker like the coward he is while Joe Biden meets with the people, gets his phone in instructions from President Putin yesterday to attack peaceful protestors and media in Lafayette Park, forcefully taking over the park and St. Johns church for a hypocritical bible-toting photo op.

How do those cops and guard feel about enforcing President Putin's orders?

  8. Love your post 6:43. We can only hope Trump's MAGA thugs are in hiding. In my opinion when he gave his speech yesterday, he said he would protect "Second Amendment rights." In my opinion, that translates as "MAGA idiots in the red hats, help us shoot the protesters." JUst heard Governor Pritzger of Illinois on NPR. He said the same thing Governor Newsom and Mayor Garcetti did - Trump is mostly bluster, but he said it is illegal for Trump to call in the National Guard without being asked, unless he invokes this as an insurrection, and that would be idiotic...uh, oh oh!

According to a report from Bloomberg, Black civil rights leaders who participated in a conference call with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg walked away afterward “disappointed and stunned” at the tech billionaire’s seeming inability to understand issues that impact African-Americans.

The report notes that part of the discussion involved Zuckerberg’s decision to ignore and dismiss comments made by Donald Trump about police brutality protesters — with one Black leader calling the exec’s explanation “incomprehensible.”

According to Bloomberg’s Jeff Green, “Mark Zuckerberg hosted a nearly hour-long video call with U.S. civil rights leaders to discuss ongoing issues around his company’s policies as they relate to race, elections and other topics,” before adding it didn’t go well based on comments from Color of Change President Rashad Robinson.

In an interview, Robinson lamented, “… the problem with my ongoing conversations with Mark, is that I feel like I spent a lot of time, and my colleagues spent a lot of time, explaining to him why these things are a problem, and I think he just very much lacks the ability to understand it.”

  20. George Floyd Protests Increase Support for Joe Biden Over Donald Trump: Poll

The George Floyd protests have made a plurality of voters more likely to vote for former Vice President Joe Biden in this year's presidential election, new polling data shows.

The latest survey from Morning Consult found that 45 percent of registered voters were more likely to vote for Biden—all-but-confirmed as the Democratic nominee—as a result of ongoing unrest sparked by the killing of Floyd in police custody last week.

By comparison, 31 percent said they were more likely to vote for Trump in November because of the protests. Eighteen percent said the protests would not impact their vote.

Writing in the Washington Post this Tuesday, Helaine Olen contends that although President Trump is trying to lay all the blame for unrest in cities on anarchists, his policies and actions resemble an anarchist just as much as anyone.

According to Olen, it’s clear that Trump is the leading cause of the unrest.

“What has happened to our nation over both the past nearly 3½ years and the past week is exactly what we should expect to happen when the person in charge has no stated beliefs other than his self-interest, and little agenda other than tearing down the accomplishments of others,” she writes.
