When Presidents Go Wild: Lawyers Express Concern for Whistleblower's Safety

Mod: Now who exactly would be threatening the safety of this witness? Could it be President Whistle Blown-Upon? You only get one guess.

Lawyers express concern for whistleblower's safety (The Hill link): Lawyers representing the whistleblower behind the explosive complaint involving President Trump's efforts to persuade Ukraine's president to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden expressed concern for their client's safety in a letter to lawmakers released Sunday.

In a letter to Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C.), House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and others, lawyers representing the whistleblower said they had "serious concerns for our client's personal safety, as well as for others connected to this matter." They called on lawmakers "to speak out in favor of whistleblower protection and reiterate that this is a protected system where retaliation is not permitted, whether direct or implied." The lawyers also attached correspondence with acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire thanking him for his supportive words during his testimony and expressing concerns for their client.

"60 Minutes," which first obtained the letter, originally reported that the contents suggested the whistleblower was under federal protection. However, lawyer Mark Zaid said in a statement to The Hill that the news outlet "completely misinterpreted the contents of our letter."

The whistleblower's complaint, which was released to the public on Thursday, is at the center of House Democrats' impeachment inquiry. Trump and his allies have sought to discredit the complaint and the whistleblower behind it. The president on Sunday tweeted that the person who filed the complaint should be outed and that they will face "Big Consequences."

Mod: It appears that he needs witness protection from the threats of President Whistle Blown-Upon.

Trump demands to meet whistleblower, warns of 'big consequences' (MSN.com link): President Trump on Sunday evening called for the outing of a whistleblower and railed against other individuals, including Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), at the center of a growing scandal involving his phone call with Ukraine's president, warning there could be "Big Consequences." "Like every American, I deserve to meet my accuser, especially when this accuser, the so-called 'Whistleblower,' represented a perfect conversation with a foreign leader in a totally inaccurate and fraudulent way. Then Schiff made up what I actually said by lying to Congress," Trump said in a series of tweets.

"His lies were made in perhaps the most blatant and sinister manner ever seen in the great Chamber," he continued before adding that he wants Schiff, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, "questioned at the highest level for Fraud & Treason."

"In addition," he added, "I want to meet not only my accuser, who presented SECOND & THIRD HAND INFORMATION, but also the person who illegally gave this information, which was largely incorrect, to the 'Whistleblower.' Was this person SPYING on the U.S. President? Big Consequences!"

Mod: Needless to say, President Whistle Blown-Upon is very poorly rated.

CBS News poll: Majority of Americans and Democrats approve of Trump impeachment inquiry (CBS News link): More than half of Americans — and an overwhelming number of Democrats — say they approve of the fact that Congress has opened an impeachment inquiry into President Trump. But as the inquiry begins, there is no national consensus on how to assess the president's actions.

Partisans have immediately and predictably split: most Democrats call the president's handling of matters with Ukraine illegal, and deserving of impeachment.

Most Republicans call his actions proper — or, even if improper, then still legal — and feel they're an example of things that past presidents typically did, too. Most Americans think that because Congress is now taking up the matter, it will be unable to work on other issues.

Almost nine in 10 Democrats approve of the inquiry, and two-thirds strongly approve. Prior to the inquiry, some had wondered if taking up impeachment proceedings might divide a Democratic rank-and-file that has been long concerned with other policies like health care and guns. However, these findings suggest that it this is not the case: most moderate Democrats side with liberal Democrats in supporting impeachment proceedings. Of those who say they voted for a Democratic House candidate in 2018, nine in 10 feel this inquiry is necessary.

    https://www.politicususa.com/2019/09/26/leaked-audio-catches-trump-threatening-ukraine-whistleblower-with-death-and-calling-reporters-scum.html

Leaked audio of a private event that Trump attended at the UN catches the president calling reporters animals and scum while threatening the Ukraine whistleblower with death.

The Los Angeles Times got the audio of Trump saying:
“Basically, that person never saw the report, never saw the call, he never saw the call — heard something and decided that he or she, or whoever the hell they saw — they’re almost a spy,” Trump said.

“I want to know who’s the person, who’s the person who gave the whistleblower the information? Because that’s close to a spy,” he continued. “You know what we used to do in the old days when we were smart? Right? The spies and treason, we used to handle it a little differently than we do now.”

  6. 1. Donald Trump polls miserably against the leading Democratic candidates.
    2. The House is already Democratic and will likely be more so after 2020. Very little new GOP legislation is likely to happen before 2022.
    3. The outlook is bleak and getting worse for GOP Senators (including Mitch McConnell) as the campaign unfolds.
    4. The leading Democratic contender (Joe Biden) has made defeating Donald Trump the centerpiece of his campaign. Joe Biden is a MUCH weaker candidate against an incumbent President Mike Pence than against President Donald Trump.

The GOP has a third and long on their own 40 with 25 seconds left to play and no timeouts. They are behind by 4, so a field goal doesn’t do it. They need a touchdown. They need a way to win the 2020 elections.

Whistleblower reaches agreement to testify, will appear 'very soon,' Rep. Adam Schiff says

The whistleblower who filed an anonymous complaint about President Donald Trump asking Ukraine to investigate a political rival has reached an agreement to testify before Congress, Rep. Adam Schiff announced Sunday.

Talking with ABC News' "This Week," Schiff, the Democrat who chairs the House Intelligence Committee, said the anonymous whistleblower would testify "very soon" and the only thing standing in the way currently was getting security clearances for the attorneys representing the whistleblower so they could attend the testimony.

This comes amid reports yesterday that Kurt Volker, who just resigned from the State Department and appears to have detailed knowledge of what Rudy Giuliani and Donald Trump were really up to in Ukraine, is eager to give cooperative testimony to the House this week.

  18. New Details Emerge on Ukraine's Trump Admin Lobbying Blitz

Lobbyists representing then-Ukrainian President-Elect Volodymyr Zelensky met or corresponded with ten Trump administration officials in the days surrounding Zelensky’s April election, according to foreign agent filings with the Department of Justice.

Those contacts, which occurred throughout April, coincided with an effort by President Trump and his personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani to press for additional scrutiny of former vice president Joe Biden’s son’s business dealings in Ukraine, efforts that are now at the center of an impeachment inquiry into the president.

The FARA filing shows extensive efforts by the new Ukrainian president’s team to open up channels of communication with the Trump administration and arrange an official delegation to Kiev. According to an intelligence community whistleblower, Trump was reluctant to permit high-level engagement with Zelensky before the Ukrainian president acceded to requests for a new investigation into Biden’s youngest son Hunter, who formerly sat on the board of a large Ukrainian energy company.

In the weeks between a Ukrainian election that winnowed the presidential field to two and the subsequent runoff that saw Zelensky unseat the incumbent president, his campaign hired Signal Group Consulting to advance its interests in Washington, Foreign Agents Registration Act filings show.

  24. Pompeo Took Part in Trump-Zelensky Phone Call, Official Says

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was among administration officials who listened in on the July 25 phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a senior State Department official said Monday, a disclosure that ties the State Department more closely to the House impeachment inquiry.

Mr. Pompeo’s participation on the call hasn’t been previously reported. Last week, a State Department official disputed the contention in a complaint filed under federal whistleblower laws by a Central Intelligence Agency officer that another top State Department official, counselor Ulrich Brechbuhl, listened in on the call.

House Democrats have opened an impeachment inquiry focused on Mr. Trump’s dealings with Ukraine, and lawmakers are focusing on the whistleblower complaint and a record of the call released by the administration.

Three House committees on Friday subpoenaed Mr. Pompeo for documents related to the inquiry; the secretary has until Oct. 4 to produce them. Separately, the committees plan to depose five current or former State Department officials regarding Ukraine.

Michael Steele: Trump 'wetting his pants'

... Michael Steele, a former Republican National Committee chairman and now a political analyst for MSNBC, said yesterday that the tweets showed President Trump was "wetting his pants a little bit" and "trying to get control of something he's losing a grip on."

He also argued that the Trump administration started the Ukraine scandal—which prompted the Democrat-led House's decision to start an impeachment inquiry into the president—by "putting out a document they thought was innocuous and unimportant."

Steele made the remarks on MSNBC after host Ayman Mohyeldin asked him about comments Trump made about the whistleblower on Sunday in an attempt to discredit them ...

  26. CNN Poll: Support for impeaching Trump rises among independents and Republicans

Americans are about evenly split over impeaching President Donald Trump and removing him from office, as support for that move has risen among independents and Republicans, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS after the announcement of a formal impeachment inquiry by House Democrats last week.

About half, 47%, support impeaching the President and removing him from office, up from 41% who felt that way in a CNN poll in May. The current level matches the high point for impeaching Trump in previous CNN polling -- 47% said they felt that way in September 2018.

The share who favor impeachment and removal from office now narrowly outpaces the share who say they don't feel that way -- a first in CNN polling -- although the two figures are within the poll's margin of sampling error. Opposition stands at 45% in the new poll, down from 54% who said so in May and the lowest point in CNN polling on this topic.

The change since May has largely come among independents and Republicans. About three-quarters of Democrats favor impeaching Trump and removing him from office, roughly the same as in May, while among independents, support for impeachment and removal has risen 11 points to 46% among independents and 8 points to 14% among Republicans.

    1. The House intelligence committee is still on the job, which means that it's the only working legislative committee that will get news coverage. Everything they do will be talked about they are driving the narrative putting Trump on the defense and dominating the news cycle.

    2. House Republicans are out of town so not easy to get coverage and react as quickly in the news cycle.
