Donald Trump Jr. Goes Nuts On Rep. Liz Cheney After She Fist-Bumps President Biden

Mod: Apparently Donald Trump Jr. comes from a world where people being respectful to one another is frowned upon with extreme prejudice.

Donald Trump Jr. Comes For Rep. Liz Cheney After She Fist-Bumps President Biden (Huffington Post link): The idea of hands across the political aisle had Donald Trump Jr. sputtering Thursday after he spotted Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) fist-bumping President Joe Biden (D-USA) before the president’s address to Congress on Wednesday night.

Donald Trump’s eldest son fumed about the gesture before Biden delivered what Trump Jr. called a “radical socialist vision” for America (like increased taxes for the wealthy). He erroneously claimed the fist bump occurred after Biden’s remarks, when in fact it occurred as the president walked to the podium, so perhaps Trump Jr. didn’t actually watch the speech he attacked.

He also griped in a tweet that Cheney and the rest of the “GOP leadership” (i.e., his dad’s punching bag, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell) has apparently become so “inclusive” that Democrats might be welcome.

CNN’s Chris Cillizza warned that the brief fist bump could launch a thousand negative ads against Cheney, though she quickly bashed the policies outlined by Biden as “bad for Wyoming and bad for America.”

Cheney was one of at least 20 people whom Biden fist-bumped or elbow-bumped on his way to the podium. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) last November fist-bumped then Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.).

But it was apparently too much for Trump Jr. to wrap his head around the concept of politicians disagreeing and still being civil — even friendly — with one another.

Cheney herself schooled Junior — and other critics — on civility hours after his tweet. While she disagrees with Biden’s policies, she explained, “we’re not sworn enemies.” When the president “reaches out to greet me in the chamber of the House of Representatives, I will always respond in a civil, respectful and dignified way,” she tweeted.

Mod: More on Junior getting his empty head slapped at the link.

The proud tradition of Republican lawmakers touting provisions of the American Rescue Plan that they voted against continues this week.

"Rest assured, this is not about Maria Yovanovitch," he continued. "This is not just about Ukraine -- this could be about a multitude of other issues, you know, that shady Rudy has been involved with. As I always say, this is just the icing on the cake when it comes to the Southern District of New York review of what is going to be probably inside of Rudy's cellphones. He'll probably have information and contact with Bill Barr, with Jared Kushner, with Don [Trump] Jr."

"There could be issues regarding the illegal pardons that were given out. Who knows what is in there? You know who knows? The Southern District of New York and they don't play fair," he added with a rueful smile. " The funny -- the irony here is that Rudy was the one who created that playbook for the Southern District to really take this gangster tactic, you know, against individuals that they're prosecuting. They're really not prosecuting, they're convicting."

  6. Many Republican voters agree with Biden - 'trickle-down economics' has failed, poll shows. In his speech to Congress on Wednesday night, Biden attacked trickle-down economics as an idea that has never worked. The poll was conducted after the speech.
The theory, which asserts that tax breaks and other benefits for corporations and the wealthy will benefit everyone else, has been fiercely debated since Reagan made it a centerpiece of his economic strategy in the 1980s.

  7. Ousted Ukraine ambassador Marie Yovanovitch part of Rudy Giuliani federal inquiry, lawyer says

The campaign to oust the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine is part of the federal inquiry into the dealings of Rudy Giuliani, the personal lawyer to former President Donald Trump, who dismissed Marie Yovanovitch from her post two years ago.

Giuliani's attorney, Robert Costello, said Friday that Yovanovitch's name was among about eight others referenced in a search warrant served during an early morning raid Wednesday at the former New York mayor's Manhattan apartment and law offices.

Yovanovitch, a career diplomat, was a key witness in the 2019 Trump impeachment hearings in which lawmakers examined the president's efforts to pressure Ukrainian officials to investigate then-Democratic rival Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.

The former ambassador's connection to the Giuliani probe was first reported by the New York Times.

  10. Ex-Trump officials panicked they're next after Giuliani raid: 'Even the most loyal people have their breaking point'

According to a report from CNN, former members of Donald Trump's administration panicked after hearing federal officials raided the home and offices of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani fearing that they could be next.

On Thursday, federal investigators armed with a warrant confiscated cell phones and computers belonging to Giuliani as part of an investigation into his dealings with Ukraine that one stunned Trump associate called "overkill."

News of the raid was greeted with dismay by former Trump administration officials as they have come to recognize that Attorney General Merrick Garland is allowing U.S. Attorneys under him to pursue former government officials, reports CNN.

  13. Republicans ask Biden to withdraw 'divisive' proposal to teach more Black history

Dozens of Senate Republicans called on the Biden administration on Friday to withdraw what they say is a “divisive” education proposal that would place greater emphasis on slavery and the contributions of Black Americans in history and civics lessons taught in U.S. schools.

In the latest salvo of a burgeoning culture war over race in America, 39 Republican lawmakers led by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said the proposed Education Department policy would divert established school curricula toward a "politicized and divisive agenda" fixated on the country's flaws.

"Young Americans deserve a rigorous understanding of civics and American history. They need to understand both our successes and our failures," the Republican senators wrote in a letter to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona dated April 29. The letter was released on Friday.

"Americans do not need or want their tax dollars diverted from promoting the principles that unite our nation toward promoting radical ideologies meant to divide us."

    1. Our history books have been so whitewashed to appease conservatives that there's little left. I know of one high school history book that described black people as immigrants to came to the US to work! History has long been taught from a white perspective and from the perspective of the great white men who built America, from the Founders to the robber barons and dynasties founded by Rockefellers, Carnegie, and others. Not much is included about how they built their fortunes and the people they trampled on to do it.

We all learn from our own mistakes in life and from what we read about the results of choices made. We have a more recent example in the horrible result from 2016 of people choosing Trump over Clinton. That is one of the purposes of studying history—to learn from what went wrong as well as what went right. Sports teams use videos of past games to learn these lessons. The military uses past skirmishes and wars to learn lessons. Yet Republicans want to deny our children—the future leaders of the country—the right to learn lessons from the past. Shame on them. They think they can bury history as deep as they’ve buried their own honesty and morals.

'Tim Nolan knew vulnerability when he saw it'

The case in Campbell County Circuit Court garnered national attention. Nolan's brash style made him one of the more visible campaigners for President Trump in Northern Kentucky, though since his arrest many in the campaign publicly questioned his claim of heading the campaign in Campbell County.

"This has been one of oddest cases I’ve ever seen," Lape told the courtroom as she started the sentencing on Friday.

The charges against Nolan involved 19 women, seven of which were under 18, and go back as far as 2004. All but two were addicted to opioids, Whaley said.

He would often visit a local woman's shelter in Covington, Transitions' Women's Residential Addiction Program, and "was a frequent volunteer at drug court," to meet women addicted to opioids, said Assistant Attorney General Barbara Whaley, the special prosecutor in the case.

Transitions didn't respond to a message seeking comment.

  26. Biden Discloses Some of Trump's Secret Drone Strike Rules

The Biden administration has disclosed a set of rules secretly issued by President Donald J. Trump in 2017 for counterterrorism “direct action” operations — like drone strikes and commando raids outside conventional war zones — which the White House has suspended as it weighs whether and how to tighten the guidelines.

While the Biden administration censored some passages, the visible portions show that in the Trump era, commanders in the field were given latitude to make decisions about attacks so long as they fit within broad sets of “operating principles,” including that there should be “near certainty” that civilians “will not be injured or killed in the course of operations.”

At the same time, however, the Trump-era rules were flexible about permitting exceptions to that and other standards, saying that “variations” could be made “where necessary” so long as certain bureaucratic procedures were followed in approving them.

In October, Judge Edgardo Ramos of the Southern District of New York had ordered the government turn over the 11-page document in response to Freedom of Information Act lawsuits filed by The New York Times and by the American Civil Liberties Union. The Biden administration inherited that case and sought a delay but has now complied, providing a copy to both plaintiffs late on Friday.
