Right wing “Christians” go berserk after Pope Francis spells out true Christianity

Mod: Some great stuff from the Palmer Report.

Right wing “Christians” go berserk after Pope Francis spells out true Christianity (Palmer Report link): Pope Francis tested the piety of the powerful recently, and the powerful failed. Judging by comments on social media accusing the Pope of being socialist scum, those who failed most miserably include the so-called “Christian Right” who proudly proclaim their Devotion to Christ in their bios, yet seem oddly unfamiliar with the actual teachings of Jesus.

Take a look at some of the things the Pope said (in bold), along with their biblical underpinnings (in italics), showing that the Pope simply applied the teachings of the Bible in a modern context.

“We must adapt our socio-economic models so they have a human face, because many models have lost it. Thinking about these situations, in God’s name I want to ask:

“Arms manufacturers and dealers to totally cease their activity, that foments violence and war, often in the context of geopolitical games that costs millions of lives and displaces many people.”

“He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.” Isiah 2:4; Micah 4:3

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.” Matthew 5:9

“The big food corporations to stop imposing monopolistic production and distribution structures that inflate prices and end up withholding bread from the hungry.”

“For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink . . . [J]ust as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.” Matthew 25:42-45

“Financial groups and international credit institutions to guarantee poor countries the basic needs of their people and to waive those debts so often contracted against the interests of those same peoples.”

“At the end of every seven years you shall grant a remission of debts.” Deuteronomy 15:1. “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” Matthew 5:7

“Technology giants to stop preying on human weakness, people’s vulnerability, in order to make a profit.”

“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5

“That the media put an end to the logic of post-truth, disinformation, defamation, slander and that seek attraction for scandal”

“‘And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” Deuteronomy 5:20

“That governments and all politicians work for the common good. Let them beware of listening only to the economic elite; may they be servants of those people who ask for land, shelter and work and a good life in harmony with all humanity and creation.”

“[T]hose who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Matthew 23:12

“[I]t is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!” Matthew 19:24

“For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. . . [W]hen you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’” Matthew 25:35-40.

“All of us religious leaders, that we never use God’s name to foment wars. Let us stand by our people, the workers, the humble, and fight together with them so that integral human development may become a reality. Let us build bridges of love.”

“‘You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.” Deuteronomy 5:11.

“’And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3.

“If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,’ but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” James 2:15-17

As for the Pope, who has suffered ridicule and scorn from the so-called religious right for his statements that simply reflect the actual teachings of Jesus, as well as other Bible verses, perhaps he may take comfort in this:

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:11-12.

And as for the hypocritical Christian Right who mightily proclaim their own virtues and devotion while acting despicably towards their fellow humans – beware. Jesus condemned this behavior. See, e.g., Matthew 23:2-39, Matthew 7: 21-23, Matthew 15:7-9, Luke 6:37-42, Matthew 7:1-6, 1 John 2:3-6.

Lauren Boebert’s Campaign Mistakenly Says That She Represents Utah

Mod: In all fairness, Utah is just shooting distance from Colorado. They also have similar shapes.

Lauren Boebert’s Campaign Mistakenly Says That She Represents Utah (Political Flare link): There’s a first time for everything, they say, and GOP firebrand Lauren Boebert is full of firsts. Boebert is serving her first term as the first congresswoman from Colorado who had never served in public office before her election.

Her first week in Congress was peppered with people calling her a “fool” and a “QAnon conspiracy theorist.” She was the first House member to be reprimanded by Capitol police for violating DC gun laws. She even used her first speech to claim that the 2020 election (you know, the one she got elected in) wasn’t legitimate.

Now the Colorado Republican has a new first to be proud of: She is the very first candidate to file her candidacy for the next election with the wrong state listed.

Forbes picked up on the gaffe Friday morning when they noticed that her filing with the Federal Election Commission for the midterms listed her as a candidate for Utah‘s 3rd District, rather than the state she actually represents.

The filing was quickly amended again, but it honestly makes you wonder what someone who would make a mistake like that is even doing in Congress. Whether it was Boebert herself, or more likely a staffer, this seems like a pretty basic thing a politician should get right.

And considering the fact that she’s already faced allegations of using campaign funds to pay rent and utilities for her business — Shooter’s Grill, a gun-themed restaurant when patrons are encouraged to open carry — and faced even more serious accusations of having helped to plan the Capitol siege on January 6, you would think that Boebert would be as by-the-book as humanly possible.

Mar-a-Lockup: Adam Schiff Says Former President Cannot Be “Too Big To Jail”

Mod
: A former President is just another citizen. No matter how much he whines about every damn thing.

Adam Schiff Says Former President Cannot Be “Too Big To Jail” (10zTalk link): During Donald Trump’s term, the U.S. Justice Department made clear that indicting a sitting president is still outside its typical scope. Now that he’s out of office, people are wondering if he’s still protected, or exactly how the United States can move against a former president if criminal charges should be deemed appropriate.

However, Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) believes Trump may be criminally culpable for his role in the January 6th attack on Congress, and if so, he says that the system cannot allow the former president to escape justice, much less set a precedent placing all future presidents outside the law.

In an interview with the Harvard Gazette, Schiff referenced Trump’s phone call to the Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. In that call, Trump urged Raffensperger to “find” the votes he needed to flip the state.

Schiff said he’s concerned that he isn’t seeing the Justice Department move on that call in particular, and opines that if anyone besides Trump had made the same demand, they might have already been indicted.

Schiff: "We cannot have a system where a current president can’t be prosecuted, and then, because we don’t want to look backward, the former president can’t be prosecuted; that they’re somehow too big to jail. Because, if we get to that point, then the president really does become above the law."

He says this is especially a concern with Trump running again. Although Trump has not officially declared a run, he’s done a lot of hinting at it, and his campaign has been fundraising.

The January 6th Committee is taking the Trump connection to the attack seriously, subpoenaing several of the people in his inner circle and sending a referral to the DOJ to take legal action against Trump’s advisor, Steve Bannon, for ignoring the subpoena. However, at this time, they do not seem to have attempted to subpoena Trump himself.

Benedict Donald Is Now Accusing William Barr Of Rigging The Election For Biden

Mod: What is Donald going to do when he runs out of people to blame for his lost election?

Trump Is Now Accusing William Barr Of Rigging The Election For Biden (PoliticusUSA link): In a letter to the editor that could only be described as deranged, Trump wrote to The Wall Street Journal that Barr rigged the election for Biden.

Trump wrote in The Wall Street Journal a list of conspiracies in Pennsylvania that caused him to lose the state:

Numerous reports and sworn affidavits attested to poll watcher intimidation and harassment, many by brute force. Attorney General Bill Barr ordered U.S. Attorney Bill McSwain to stand down and not investigate election irregularities ... Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook poured over $17 million to interfere in the Pennsylvania election, including $5.5 million on “ballot processing equipment” in Philadelphia and $552,000 for drop boxes where the voting pattern was not possible.

Given what appears to be Trump’s current mental state, it is not a surprise that Glenn Youngkin does not want him anywhere near his campaign in Virginia

Trump is blaming his own attorney general for Joe Biden’s win. Barr did not rig the election for Joe Biden. He did refuse to be a party to Trump, using the Justice Department as a tool for his coup to overturn the election. In Donald Trump’s mind, Barr’s behavior constitutes throwing the election for Biden.

Willam Barr is no hero. He allowed the Justice Department to function as Trump’s personal legal counsel, he killed the Russia investigation and deserves every ounce of scorn that he receives for the rest of his days.

Trump lost, and he won’t let it go. Trump is still fighting to be declared the winner in 2020. The nation has moved on, but Donald Trump has not.

Dr. Birx Says That Trump Cost Tens of Thousands of Lives by Caring More About the Election Than the Pandemic

Mod: Yet another reason why Trump needs to spend the rest of his life in jail.

Dr. Birx Says That Trump Cost Tens of Thousands of Lives by Caring More About the Election Than the Pandemic (Political Flare link): With the constantly shifting litany of excuses that selfish conservatives have used to refuse to wear masks or get vaccinated, it can sometimes be hard to remember what their issue was in the beginning. They just didn’t believe the virus was real.

If that seems pretty stupid almost two years later, that’s because it was stupid. We look back on that now the same way we will look back on people now arguing that their own antibodies should protect them.

But in what you will note is a rare bit of compassion from me for the terminally dumb, I’d like to offer them a meager defense. They were literally being tricked by the people they trusted most. In fact, more than 130,000 people could have been spared an untimely demise, if only Trump had cared more about telling America the truth than he did about getting reelected. Perhaps more, considering the snowball effect created by how long Trump spent denying how bad the problem was.

The latest evidence of this comes from Dr. Scarf Lady, AKA Deborah Birx. You remember her as the onetime COVID response coordinator under Donald Trump who sat and winced as he said increasingly ridiculous things in the James Brady Briefing Room.

While it’s tempting to lump her in with the rest of the cast of characters who allowed Trump to go out in public and tell people to drink bleach and stick flashlights up their backsides, the fact is, she’s coming clean now. Maybe that will help, but probably not.

In testimony before congressional investigators, Birx explained that Scott Atlas, Trump’s main advisor on coronavirus, created a culture within the White House that made those with more reasonable voices feel marginalized as Trump and Atlas basically pretended there was nothing wrong.

Atlas was yet another in a long line of Trump picks who either had no experience in what they were chosen for or believed the opposite of what conventional wisdom should have told them. The former president likely selected him after seeing his appearances on Fox News calling the crisis overblown — nothing was more important to Trump, after all, than looking like everything was under control.

To think of the lives that could’ve been saved by simply acknowledging the severity of COVID is an exercise in national regret. And that doesn’t even begin to cover the psychological damage it did to people who now believe that horse deworming medicine is going to save them.

Florida Dudes: Ron DeSantis’s alleged wild nights with illegally-drinking underaged-teen girls revealed

Mod
: Oh dear. Ron DeSantis, Matt Gaetz and Joel Greenburg pictured together? Must be a sad coincidence.

Ron DeSantis’s alleged wild nights with illegally-drinking underaged-teen girls revealed (Occupy Democrats link): What is it about Florida Republicans and under-aged girls? After the accusations that Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) illegally transported a not-yet-legal teenager to Bermuda for his paid sexual gratification, now HillReporter has uncovered photographic evidence that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis attended an illicit drinking party with his high-school-aged students back when he was a teacher at an exclusive private school in the early-aughts.

DeSantis taught history for a year at the Darlington School in Georgia, in between graduating from Yale University in 2001 and attending Harvard Law SchoolDarlington is both a boarding school and a day school serving grades K through 12th-grade, but DeSantis worked with the upper classmates at the high school level at a time when he was only four or five years older than the seniors in his classes.

The whistleblower who provided the evidence of DeSantis’s mingling with under-aged drinkers at an out-of-the-classroom party told HillReporter that the now-governor was considered by students to be a young “hot teacher” whom the female students crushed on.

Here’s the photo that the whistleblower provided to the website, allegedly portraying a young DeSantis surrounded by a bevy of high school beauties at least one of whom is seen prominently holding an illicit beer bottle.

According to HillReporter, “the source who provided the photo says that it was taken prior to graduation — meaning the young girls would still have been DeSantis’ responsibility at the time. It is not clear whether any of them were legal adults, though they would have been too young to purchase alcohol.”

In case anyone had any doubts that the male in that photo was actually a younger Ron DeSantis, the website also published a photo of the future governor taken from a yearbook photo that features the same Moe Howard bowl cut of his hair and the same coprophagic grin.

The accusation that DeSantis seriously mishandled his responsibilities as the adult in the room of under-aged drinkers comes at a perilous time for Florida GOP politicians.

With the governor’s close ties to Congressman Gaetz already under scrutiny — and the investigation into Gaetz’s child sex trafficking allegations reportedly widening its scope to include other top Republicans in the state, the federal investigation that started with the prosecution of Florida tax collector Joel Greenberg is moving uncomfortably close to the Florida governor’s mansion.

PSN: 'A democracy that lacks the will to properly deal with its traitors will not long survive'

Mod: My latest Sunday Opinion column from various LA County papers.

All the news that doesn’t fit in print (Pasadena Star News link): I read a lot of newspapers. They’ve been an integral part of my life since I was a kid. My dad was in the business, and we had three or four papers tossed on our driveway early each morning. He needed to know what the competition was up to before leaving for work.

One of the important jobs I performed for our household was to gather the papers up, remove the rubber bands that held them together and place each on the kitchen table for family perusal. We would invariably discuss the big issues of the day at breakfast, often while pointing a demonstrative finger at an article in question. There were always big issues. Just like today.

A positive argument for newspapers is they can be a communal family resource. They’re shared, and since all the interested folks read the same stories, discussed as well. They provide a more social experience than, say, viewing slanted Fox News broadcasts all day. Or spending equally long hours watching tamed electrons swirl on computer monitors.

That said, there are certain sorts of stories that often don’t seem to make it to the papers. Fears of messy controversies being one reason. The ideological perspectives of some editors who curate them another. It’s the way things are, I’m afraid. Nothing new about it.

As examples, here are a few stories that I have not seen committed to pulp, yet have been widely read on-line.

The newser Raw Story is running with an article headlined “Jeffrey Epstein said Bill Barr was really running the White House — not ‘moron’ Trump.” Drawn from Michael Wolff’s new book, the deceased and possibly murdered Epstein is alleged to have procured juvenile women for Donald’s pleasure over the span of two decades. Proving again that no john is ever a hero to his pimp.

A Southern California resource I frequent often is called Dead State. The name is a play on the more famous MAGA site Red State. In an article they call “Franklin Graham praises NC Lt. Gov for having ‘the guts’ to publicly call LGBT people ‘filth,’” Billy Graham’s unfortunate son expresses a shocking hatred of gay folks that I do not believe you would have ever heard from Jesus.

One of my favorite news sites is PoliticusUSA. They’re running an article called “Adam Schiff Tells Trump And His Cronies It’s A New World Now And Criminal Charges Are Coming.” The gist being congressional January 6 investigators are issuing subpoenas to the likes of Steve Bannon. Should these individuals not show up and testify as ordered, Schiff assures us they will be dragged into court and even jailed. Good stuff. A democracy that lacks the will to properly deal with its traitors will not long survive.

A piece from The Huffington Post titled “Ex-Spy Behind Salacious Trump Dossier Has Damning Theory About Alleged Pee Tape” is colorful. It points out that much of the renewed interest in the Steele Dossier was caused by Trump himself. “I’m not into golden showers!” he inexplicably blurted out at a recent National Republican Senatorial Committee retreat. As a result Christopher Steele is now touring TV news shows claiming the tape exists, and that its Moscow owners continue to blackmail Trump with it.

Raw Story
has another provocative piece. Titled “Trump mocks ‘classic RINO’ Colin Powell after he dies from COVID-19 complications,” it shares how the former president trolled the now dead ex-secretary of state. “He was a classic RINO, if even that, always being the first to attack other Republicans. He made plenty of mistakes, but anyway, may he rest in peace!” That Trump, who dodged military service repeatedly during the Vietnam era, should attack a highly decorated four-star general just after his death is both cowardly and classless.

Compelling stuff. And now you’ve read about it in the newspaper.

1/6 Committee Is Investigating If Domestic Terrorists And Foreign Governments Funded Trump’s Coup

Mod
: If a foreign government did help fund the Jan. 6 terrorist assault on the Capitol, could it be considered an act of war?

1/6 Committee Is Investigating If Domestic Terrorists And Foreign Governments Funded Trump’s Coup (PoliticusUSA link): The 1/6 Committee has investigators looking into the funding sources for Trump’s Stop The Steal rallies to see if the money came from domestic terrorists or foreign governments.

CNN reported: The House select committee is setting its sights on the financing behind events and people associated with January 6, CNN has learned, including money that funded pro-TrumpStop the Steal” rallies that preceded the attack on the Capitol that day, in an effort to determine whether any election law violations or financial crimes took place.

The Democratic-led panel is focused in part on understanding how event organizers and vendors were paid, and how the two rallies were funded, according to multiple sources familiar with the investigation, including some who have been interviewed by the committee. Investigators also want to know if any funding came from domestic extremists or foreign sources, sources say.

Where Did The Money For Trump’s Coup Come From?

Millions of dollars were spent on the coup plot to keep Trump in power. The question is who paid for it? It is known that the Trump campaign spent millions of dollars organizing the DC rally/terrorist staging area on 1/6. Who paid for all of the other activities? Where did the money come from for the satellite rallies?

Since Trump has a long history of taking money from foreign banks and governments, it is common sense to follow the 1/6 cash. There could be no greater act of democracy destabilization in the United States than funding Trump’s coup.

The 1/6 Committee might be set to uncover some of the darkest secrets of the Republican Party.

2020 Election officials share death threats sent to them by Trump supporters: ‘You will be served lead’

Mod: At what point do we stop referring to them as anything but domestic terrorists?

Election officials share death threats sent to them by Trump supporters: ‘You will be served lead’ (Dead State link): “Hey, Rick. Two hundred and thirty four years ago, the founding caucasian fathers of America gave us the Second Amendment. Time’s running out, Richard. We’re coming after you and every motherf***er that stole this election with our Second Amendment, subpoenas be damned, you’re going to be served lead, you f***ing enemy enemy communist c***sucker. You will be served lead.”

That was one of 150 voice messages sent to Richard Barron, elections director of Georgia’s Fulton County. As VICE News points out, former President Donald Trump mentioned Barron by name at a rally in Valdosta, Georgia, on Dec. 5.

Trump showed a video of Barron to the audience, saying, “So, if you just take the crime of what those Democratic workers were doing, that’s ten times more than I need to win the state.” Soon after, Richard Barron started receiving threats.

“Hey, Rick,” one voicemail said. “Watching this video of you on YouTube. I can’t believe you can’t count votes in Fulton County. It’s absolutely incredible. How deceivious? (sic) How deceitful you are? You need to get your act together or people like me really may go after people like you.”

“If you have a hand in this, you deserve to go to prison, you actually deserve to hang by your goddamn skinny-a** soyboy neck,” said another message.

China Don: The Chinese Business Interests Behind 'TRUTH Social' - Trump's New Social Media Site

Mod: The wingnuts have been rattling on about 'China Biden' for months. Take that to mean Trump is taking a lot of Chinese money, and they own a big chunk of his facile ass.

The Chinese Business Interests Behind 'TRUTH Social' - Trump's New Social Media Site (Texas Signal link): Last night, news broke that former President Donald Trump was launching a new company with the goal of creating a new social network, ironically called TRUTH Social. The new company, called Trump Media and Technology Group, will oversee TRUTH Social operations, and potentially expand to new markets such as TV and entertainment, according to company pitches that were revealed on Twitter.

According to SEC documents, the current CEO of Trump Media and Technology Group, Patrick Orlando has also been serving as the CEO of Yunhong International, a Chinese-based company. Yunhong International notably operates out of Wuhan, China which has been the center of right-wing conspiracy theories since COVID-19 began.

According to a report by MeidasTouch.com, SEC documents reveal that Trump Media and Technology Group is planning to merge with Yunhong International, leaving open the possibility for Chinese government influence over the new site and company.

This news comes after years of Donald Trump criticizing the Chinese government for their censorship practices and economic policies, particularly their trade policies and how they treat American businesses.

Donald Trump’s new company will have a hard time competing with well established social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, but they may also find it difficult to build a user base among conservatives, due to the existing right-wing social media alternatives, such as Gab, GETTR, and Parler

Only time will tell how successful this next Trump venture will be, but the real test lies with users, who will have to overlook the blatant Chinese influence over Trump’s new company, and accept the shady terms of service, before being allowed on the platform.

Sergeant Adolf: Army boots Trump supporter with ‘Hitler mustache’ for Jan 6 misconduct

Mod: Good and all I guess, but how did some MAGA clown with Hitler hair ever get himself an Army "secret security clearance"?

Army boots Trump supporter with ‘Hitler mustache’ for Jan 6 misconduct (Raw Story link): The U.S. Army demoted reservist Timothy Hale-Cusanelli from sergeant to private and gave him an other-than-honorable discharge after a dozen years of service, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

"An Army reservist charged in the Justice Department's sweeping investigation of the U.S. Capitol riot was quietly demoted and discharged earlier this year, becoming the first known service member to be forced out of the military after officials learned of an alleged involvement in the Jan. 6 insurrection," the newspaper reported, citing personnel records reviewed and the former soldier's lawyer.

Attorney Jonathan Crisp complained about the discharge.

"Crisp called the punitive discharge, which severely limits benefits and resources otherwise available to military veterans, 'improper' because, he said, it was delivered while Hale-Cusanelli was incarcerated and because any comments made in the former soldier's defense could violate his 5th Amendment rights in the federal case," the newspaper reported. "Typically, commanders wait until criminal cases are finished before making discharge decisions, Crisp said."

"At the time of his arrest, Hale-Cusanelli, who remains in federal custody, according to the Justice Department, was employed as a civilian security contractor at Naval Weapons Station Earle in New Jersey and held a secret security clearance, prosecutors said in a March court filing," the newspaper reported.

"Navy investigators interviewed 44 of his colleagues, including Navy personnel and fellow security contractors, about his behavior at work. All but 10 described Hale-Cusanelli as 'having extremist or radical views pertaining to the Jewish people, minorities and women,' prosecutors said." Multiple colleagues mentioned Hale-Cusanelli's "Hitler mustache" to investigators.
